My local model zone has these for less than half price, just under £50, this looks superb, (even the 120 Squadron codes suit me…) this won’t fit into any cabinet that I have but I must admit to being tempted to go back tomorrow to get one. They have a B-17 as well (RAF night bomber colours) huge models, I’ve owned cars smaller than these but I’m so tempted !
If you compare the current price of the Monogramme/Revell plastic kit (£ 34.99), which is the same scale the price they’re asking is not too bad for a die-cast model.
I know I recently got a 1/32 scale Mossie for the same price in the MZ Sheffield branch.
To go back to the original question:-
Montgolfier balloon,
Stringfellow’s steam-powered aeroplane (ok this was a scale, unmanned model which flew, albeit inside his factory)-arguably the first powered heavier-than- air aeroplane to fly,
Then the Wright flyer (arguably the first manned HTA powered aeroplane),
Vickers Vimy- trans-Atlantic flyer,
Sikorsky VS-300 1st helicopter,
Heinkel 176, Gloster Whittle,
Bell X-1,
X-15,
TU 144 & Concorde
& Rockwell SST-1 Columbia.
To all those budding aircraft collectors out there the word is that Meteor WK800 is coming up for sale shortly via http://www.edisposals.com
Interested parties might be interested to note “… only offers above £5,000 will be considered”
Anyone bought the Sea Fury yet?
Final bidding for the Sea Fury is 18 April.
Looks as if things are begining to move at Coltishall.

Nice to see that some communitee spirit survives in this country.:D 😀
I found the Meteor on google earth at long last:D 😀 😀
however the same area on flash earth reveals a big mass of disturbed ground with no sign of the meteor.
In case it takes Pondskater a while to dig out his photos, here are some taken at Doncaster in 1976. Pity that tower/prewar terminal was not preserved.
Incidentally, I knew a pilot who had flown Dakotas from Doncaster during the war, when he was with 271 Squadron – and those of you who are local might be interested in his low vis approach. Locate the A1 and fly north at low level until passing the Punches Hotel (lights always visible), count so many seconds, turn left 90 descend and flare after another prescribed number of seconds. Well it worked.
Thanks for the photo’s- this is the sort of thing we need at Aeroventure to build the historical picture of the airfeild- please PM me & let me know if you are willing to let us use some of them for our displays.
Many thanks Rad
I just attempted to sign the petition on the link included.
I guess Canadians don’t get to sign.
The reason this upsets me is both my father, a Canadian, my father in law, a Canadian were good enough to serve with the RAF in Bomber Command along with many thousands of other Canadians, but I’m not good enough to sign the petition.
My mother, Northern Irish, was also a member of the RAF during the war.
I don’t know if there is a way for Canadians to participate in this effort, but if there is please let me know, Canadians that served with the RAF are just as deserving.
Not meaning to berate any of my British friends, just the system.

There may be a way-start a petition to the Canadian government to petition our govt though diplomatic means.
The same goes for forum members of other countries who provide men to Bomber Command-..e. Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Checheslovakia & Poland.
After all they all served.
One thing that does bug me about the whole affair is , as well as being all volunteers, the attrition rate for Bomber Command percentage wise was roughly equal to that of losses on the Western front 1914-18, but more importantly losses for bomber crews were higher than both the army & navy throughout WW2
Hi folks
Does anyone have any idea what this area is at wattisham;
http://www.flashearth.com/?lat=52.132259&lon=0.951827&z=18.2&r=0&src=msl
Looks like it was built on some old dispersals and must be post war.Richard
I was based at Wattisham 1989-1990 & if memory serves me right it had somthing to do with communications at the time- but don’t quote me on it.
Only been to this museum once and it is truely remarkable what can be done with a deicated team and most importantly safe and secure storage. The large hangar is surely the most usefull item in the collection and the I would guess many other groups would love to have such a place to store, restore and display there collection. Maybe it was just me but access and directions to the site seemed rather poor and I certainly got lost get there.

You are not the first to mention the sign problem- it is somthing we are looking to improve-thanks again for pointing this out.
regards Rad.:)
Would anyone have an idea on the value of the following,
Framed signed photo of Guy Gibson inc Wings & photo of his dog “Ni**er”.
Douglas Bader signed colour newspaper cutting and dated 12/01/1979.
There are also letters from Johny Johnson, Stanford Tuck.
Also the attached scan which I cannot read the signiture.
Signed 1943 Church Fenton Xmas menu.
There is also a framed pencil drawing of a unkown pilot.
The above are all original and have provenance.
Many thanks will be able to provide more detailed info next weekend
Your best level of enquiry is to go through a specialised auction or sale company to find the values- these may help but bear in mind prices fluctuate regularly due to demand or scarcity.
Having examined the attached photo it appears to be signed “best of luck Joe Soloman”.
By the way If the Douglas Bader/Johnnie Johnson pieces reflect thier time with 616 Squadron please may I have facsimile copies ( for museum display)- PM me & let me know.
Cheers Rad.
Am I missing something here as I do not see it in any of the above pics.. I had a party interested in that bombdoor but they were not interested.
Peter, it is slightly obscured, but it can just be seen on the second photo between the glider & the Jet Provost in the corner of the hangar.
The lancaster door has been with the museum for many years & with aquisition of the rear fuselage, turrets & other parts we have a long term plan to produce a “walk though” exhibition so visitors can see the various crew positions e.t.c.
As a member of the SYAM/Aeroventure & have been for about 25 years, I feel I should reply to what appears to be a comment suggesting that the museum has a “magpie” collection policy.
I can assure you that is not the case. I am not going into great detail giving examples of what the museum has exchanged & farmed out over the years, as I feel this is not neccessary with comments made by other forum members on this thread.
What I will say is this, I joined this Forum both for my own enjoyment & to enable me to get occasional feedback (both good & bad) from forum members in order to enable us to continue to improve the museum for the benefit of visitors. After all we are a registered eductional charity- i.e. we aim to educate & inspire!
We do take advice on board & thank you for the comments received, so far the greater %age has been favourable- without them we run the risk of stagnating the displays & turning visitors away.
Yes we are a large concern, & yes, we do have a degree of duplication in airframes- for many reasons i.e. spares recovery, museum members private ownership, display rotation e.t.c.
Also we are not perfect, we don,t get things right every time, but we do aim to run things as professionally as possible.
As for the comment made by Grim Reaper, may I suggest he gives a brief explaination as to the context of his comment made on this thread.
Thats about right…. nothing comes out of the Doncaster (formerly Firbeck) collection once it goes in.
I do hope this comment was made in jest.
PS can anyone tell me how to put a photo on to my name header please?
Go to ‘User CP’ on the tool bar at top and then ‘Edit Avatar’
