Sorry mantog. The museum hasn’t given us a running schedule yet. I know that the nimrod should be shut down by 1300. Museum is open from 1000. Hope this helps and that you enjoy the day.

    Good News Everyone,

This sunday at YAM will see (and more importantly hear) Aircraft ground runs.

Come along and here the roar of the mighty Hunter as her 4 spey engines are run up.

Also (I believe) the Victor and Buccaneer will be having a growl also, with their respective powerplants being sparked up. Along with the purrr of the museums running prop aircraft the SE5A and Devon. The crews will be on hand to chat and answer any questions (preferable aircraft related)

we look forward to seeing you there.

Well, this weekend has been eventful from the Nimrod perspective also.
Saturday found us all gathered in the NAAFI at bacon o clock, with 1 major change, we were not going to be working!! Instead our newest member, Kimberley (Mine and Nimchicks daughter) Was been christend at the museum’s chaple. So myself and Nimchick arrived, dressed quite smart, to be greated by Nimrodmate and spey250 in hawian shirts:eek::confused::eek:. Next to arrive, my mother in law……
Need less to say, she wasn’t too impressed. After all guests arrived, and everybody was suitabley attired, the christening went a head with no dramas.
Then to show off big Kim to the family.

Sunday saw us return to YAM, this time in overalls, to see about fixing some of the on going snags. We kidnapped an electrician and stuffed him in the hyd bay to check a contents sender in one of the reservoirs. This wasn’t broken, we then sent him to the flight deck to play with the gauges, we soon discovered that the gauge was the offending but. :D:D:D! but we didn’t have a replacement. :(:(:(! but we know what is needed and have already sourced 1:cool:

Next was the problem with the howling inter comm. we had it pinned down to water ingress in one of the 4 external comms boxes, or so we thought. The AP said there was 5????? 10 years on type and I never knew this box existed. We evetually located it after a trawl in every nose panel, radome included, only to find in sat in a pool of rusty water:eek: Unplugged it, and howl was gone.:D:):D

So all in all an eventful day. Sorry there is a lack of pics, our photographer is also chief babysitter and mum now, hopefully will have some shots again soon.

the Nimrod team had a successful day on saturday. The air conditioning snag was progressed, hopefully we’ve either fixed it or we haven’t. But she’s ready for funcs on sunday. We also managed a few other minor house keeping duties to keep the jet in tip top condition. The interior was swept out, and the rear PAX (passenger) seat was re installed after the Santa’s Grotto role fit. Nimlet was introduced to YAM and the Nimrod for the first time.

the regular anti det Engine ground runs this sunday (4th march) hopefully the aircon works, other wise we are having to change a valve.

Timings will be confirmed, watch this space and hopefully see lots of you on sunday for the anti dets.

Members of the Nimrod groundcrew will be in attendance at YAM this saturday(25th Feb). Come say hello and chat, we are all fluent in Nimrod. We will be working a conditioning snag and hopefully get it ready for functionals in time for the next anti-det runs (4th Mar).

    Special guest appearence, Nimlet:)

Yes, I (we) can’t wait to show Kimberley around the Jet. She had a liitle story told to her the other morning and now knows more about the cabin conditioning systems than our Flight Engineer!!!

You say a new lens, which have you been using? What body do you use?

    ]

I’ve been using a Sigma 70-300 apo dg macro (which is the 1 I’m looking to replace), and for some closer stuff, the canon EF 28-135 (which is pretty much permantly on the camera). Both been used on the 1000d. I am looking to upgrade body to a 7d some time soon.

What I am after is a bit more length (In lens!!!) image stabaliser, a good image quality and above all, good value.

Thanks for the advice both of you.

Funds are going to be a major issue in a new lens. I have also recently considered the sigma 120-400mm. Any views?

Incidentally, the MR2 column was fitted to XV230 from April 1999 right up to the last servicing (26th July 2006) when knotchy elevator control caused its replacement) she undertook before going to Afghanistan for that sad last mission. This sad link is part of the reason I want to create a worthy display and trace as much history before it is lost.

    Any help greatly appreciated….

Sad times! I did some of the control rigging and functionals after that column change.

I’ll do some digging for you.

    Right then, here we go….

The day started in the normal fashion for the Nimrod team, with some dead pig between 2 halves of a bread roll, and the hot brown liquid, (not quite as good as the cold brown liquid consumed in york the previous day:):)) Then, once our plan was formulated it was off to the jet to don the green overalls and Hi Viz vests. Newly badged ground crew member, Avril, was taken though applying ground power while myself and Nimchick carried out a servicing, making sure that the jet was safe to run.
Once all the blanks were removed and placed out of the way, we retired to the NAFFI for lunch.

Quite refreshed at this point, we finished getting “Kim” ready for her runs. Nimchick started her tuition for engine ground running, under my watchful eye, by carrying out pre start external checks, and the pre start switch checks on the flight deck. Avril was on a spare headset outside, be trained up on the external headset by Nimrod Mate.

Zero hour rapidly approached and at 1300 and a few minutes, the APU was fired up, followed by the 4 engines, myself in the pilot seat, mal on the engineers panel, Nimchick stood in the door way as an observer and a Victor crew member in the right hand pilot seat. Flying control checks were carried out and the other hydraulic systems were functioned to check they operated correctly. This allowed the engines to warm up, or more correctly termed “heat soak” to get all the oil circulating round the engines, and lubricating sufficiently. Cabin air conditioning was the next test on the agenda, and much to our delight, this requires the engines to be throttled up:D:D. Some museum exhibits are in the jet blast area, so only the inboard engines can be advanced above idle, and then only as much as nessessary.

Genny checks followed and the engines were then shut down. All in all, a very successful day from the Nimrod point of view. Only major snag is the port conditioning will not initiate, and some intercomm issues caused by damp.

Hopefully IanF got some photos of the day. I must say, I was very privileged to be allowed onboard the Victor for her runs. Thanks to Ollie and the rest of the Victor crew for the experience.
