Now I really want to cry. Talk about a piece of history
Dan
Enough to break your heart isn’t it 🙁
Dan
Spit tested at Wright field and modified to carry the two drop tanks. It was flown back across the Atlantic this way. But due to the modifications it wasn’t stressed/adaptable to combat situations.
I guess the stress on the wings would have been too much.
I’m thinking those are the later 110 gallon metal tanks that were so common on the Iwo Mustangs.
Dan
Schiffer Publishing’s massive history of the 479th Fighter Group. and ordered myself a copy of Richard Turner’s “Big Friend, Little Friend” about his flying Mustangs with the 354th FG.
Dan
The final attack on the Death Star (in the first film) always reminded me of “The Dam Busters”.
Or is it just me? 🙂
Prior to Star Wars, Lucas had watched all kinds of WW2 combat film. There is NO DOUBTin my mind that he watched Dambusters. “How many guns to you see?” “About 20 guns, some on the towers and some on the surface.” Or something to that effect.
Could have copied it word for word. My absolute first thought when I saw it in the theater as a kid was, this guy’s seen The Dambusters.
Dan
NO idea where it came from or who the artist is. Wish I knew so I could track down a print.
BUT! It fits the season, at least here in very cold Minnesota. Wishing all a very happy holidays and new year.
Dan
Check out “Test Pilot” with Clark Gable and Spencer Tracy. It’s Black and White but they do some filming around and in one of the early B17s. Some good inflight stuff of that plane.
Throw in “Air Force” with John Garfield and you get more then your share of early shark fin B17 film as that one is based around a B17C named “Mary Ann”
And of course “A Guy Named Joe” has some good early model P38 flying.
Dan
Voy Tech,
Different aircraft to my two, but same cameraman with filter! 🙂
Surely this adds weight that the lions were painted out?

Hope I didin’t miss the sarcasm meter 🙂 Can’t be taken at the same time. Full D-Day stripes vs the half stripes on Closterman’s LO-D?
End of July photo of LO-D I would imagine. Latest Mid-July but probably late June for the original 2 full D-Day striped Spit with the badge without artwork.
Dan
There is a pic of Clostermann’s Spit V after he pranged it in the extended version of “The Big Show”.
I can’t recall, but didn’t they also use Spit VIIs? They were mentioned in the book, but it’s been that long since I read it…
Yep they had a few Spit VIIs mixed in with thier LFVs.
Dan
While primarily a Spitfire fanactic I also really like the P38 Lightning. I want histories on the 474th and 14th Fighter Groups written to help fill out my P38 Fighter Group history section.
Recent works on the 370th and 479th FGs helped fill the gaps but there is still a ways to go.
A nice history of the 35th FG in the Pacific would be welcome too and of course a good work on 41 Squadron RAF during WW2 is a given 🙂
Dan
My copy of the Mighty Eighth has seen more then it’s fair share of use. Held together with “bubble gum and bailing wire” 🙂 A wonderful book that was a Christmas gift in 1974 from my parents to their WW2 aviation fanatic son. I gave a newer edition to my son a few years back to start his library off right
Dan
…but Jeffrey Quill’s favourite Spitfire was the …

Thank you 🙂 Couldn’t have said it better myself. DP845 to be specific
Dan
I call the Ian McShane part. Sgt. Pilot Andy. “All I got was a bellyfull of channel”
I’ll bring my own Spit 🙂
Dan
and to continue the thread of noseart a bit further – here’s a ship of the 506th FG (similar to those in Dan’s postings), but with the addition of an adaption of a Vargas Girl:
Martin / Swiss Mustangs
I have that one in the 506th FG Mustang profile pipeline too. Trying to do as many as I can for the 506th FG Association.
The aircraft being 542 is Lil Ole Meanie II which also has some fancy nosea art.
Not shaded, weathered etc yet, but you get the idea. Doing the nose art is a project in itself 🙂
Dan
Rob- the ‘low back’ TE311 seems to be receiving attention far removed from spares recovery so I wouldn’t write her off yet. As for the ‘high back’ TE382
-she seems to have been consumed .
Breaks my heart about TE382 since she’s a 602 Squadron vet.
Second on my wish list to EN224 should I win the lottery 🙂
