Glad you liked it Chris. This is about the only place I post the profiles since I just do them for fun.

I’ll take a crack at the Hurricane to if you want.

I agree with Paul Rix and with Crazymainer. This is about as silly a thread as the “Greatest WWII Fighter” thread I so foolishly resurrected from the strange half-life old threads retire to. And here we all are remembering D-Day, a moment in history that enacapsulates the Allied effort in opening up a second (land) front and thereby supporting Russia’s hard yards in the East. Get a grip folks.

    Apparently I wasn’t very clear 🙂

My point was it isn’t worth the time nor the effort.

Collings Foundation B24J, then painted as “All American”. It was a real eye opener of a ride. I can’t imagine how those guys did that day after day.

My suggestion is that if you know the claim is garbage, don’t let it get to you. You can find all kinds of Luftwaffe fanatics who will til their dying day claim that the Luftwaffe didn’t lose too.

Their are ‘stat whores’ all over the place that live and die by some number they find to justify their position.

Secrets out. The Allies won the war. Key word “Allies” It was in all the papers 🙂

I’m the same way, can’t stand ladders, ledges, etc, but I’m fine in an airplane.

Very much the same. Hate heights. Love flying. Jumped out of a plane in college. Didn’t mind that either. Still don’t like being up on a roof etc though.

Seems to me the first clue is the willingness of the person to tell the stories. Most if not all of the vets I’ve met are quiet and humble men who don’t go out of their way to talk about their wartime experience.

It’s usually after being able to let them know that you have a bit of a clue yourself that you might get them talking a bit, and even then I’ve yet to find any that want to tell ‘war stories’. It’s usually about the people they served with, the good times they had away from combat etc.

I remember getting the chance to meet a Medal of Honor winner at an airshow one time. He was walking near the flight line and I took a second to thank him for what he’d done. He then thanked me for being interested.

It felt strange that he would think to say that but he was clearly a humble man who felt like he’d done his job and didn’t expect any recognition for it.

Help me out here. Someone post a wartime photo of a D-Day Spit showing half fuselage stripes and full wing stripes, with 1945 wing roundels.

    I second the ‘yuck’

Following up on what Voytech mentioned about the back of the logbook. Here are the last two pages from the one I have.

    BTW Dan,

With your expertise in Mk XIIs, is there any chance you could match codes to the following Mark Twelves of no. 41 Sqn:

I don’t know all of them but filled in the ones I could.
    Hope it helps

EN235 May 1943 (Don’t have this one. Dickie Hogarth killed in it July 18, 43)
EN236 April 1943 (NO luck here either. “Haybag” Haywood lost in it August 17, 43)
    EN237 May 1943 ( EB-V That’s S/L Tom Neil’s kite)
EN603 April-June 1943 (Not sure. Written off in a ground collision with MB844)
    EN604 May 1943 (EB-U Flown by F/O Joe Birbeck)
    EN609 April 1943 ( EB-Y)
EN612 April 1943 (Don’t have this one. F/S “WingCo” East killed in it over the Channel May 5, 43)
EN613 April 1943 (Not with 41 Squadron from what I have. Issued to 91 on 4/22/43)
    MB800 May-September 1943 (EB-B. F/O Jerzy Solak claimed a 190 in it on 6/4/43. F/S Stan May was lost in it on 9/19/43. He became a POW)
MB802 September 1943 (EB-K F/L Hugh Parry shot down to become a POW on 9/24/43)
    MB829 May 1943 (EB-W)
    MB845 September 1943 (EB-G F/O Don Smith claimed a 190 in it on 9/22/43)

Some other notes that are taped or glued in the logbook. Seems like they’d be fairly typical.

    Cheers Snapper.

Would the two (RCAF/RAF) be similar?

(Trust me, gents, this is all valuable info, even if I am asking stupid questions! ;))

They are the same from what I’ve seen. This is an RCAF, but I’ve got photocopies of many RAF pilots books and it’s the same. I’m including the inside cover from this logbook. This is the only original logbook I have. A rather prized possesion as you can imagine 🙂

Note in the upper corner that it is RCAF Form R.95(RAF 414)

Just to add to the fun. Here’s a photo of Ginger’s kite RN135, post Ginger, still with 17 Squadron during occupation duties in Japan. Definately gray-green camo and now clipped wings as I think they had full span to begin with. Not nearly as flashy a paint job as the first one.
