How much a year do you earn I may just have a bet with you, double yours !

I would’nt if I where you because if he takes you up on it you will be well out of pocket unless of course you can afford it !!!!!!!

    Reasons ;

    1. It is understood to have been recently under offer to a group in Australia
    2. Major engine issues and engine mounting and problems with CAA over orientation of engine mounts.
    3. And they also seem to have a policy of disposing of twins and just keeping single engined aircraft.

Have you got the mounting plates and the blocks that secure the aerial in the top of the fuselage ??.

Hi Deryck as has been said the Vampire is a very simple beast and provided its not got a rotten fuselage or a seized up engine it should be a fairly straight forward matter to get her runable and fit for a ferry flight under a US registration. In fact you could find it would be cost effective and not much different to the costs of sending guys over paying for transport accomodation, cranes, equipment etc.

We have access to two guys who work for/with us who are both ex RAF and ex Vampire jockeys so if you are stuck shout out.

    main spars

As i understand it the main spar blank billets are very similar and just need some careful drilling and re profiling in places.I was also informed by someone in the know that when Air Atlantique or who ever they where calling themselves at the time did the work that in Fact FIVE billet sets where made at a cost of circa £75k each set. Also they have to be cut and drilled to suit the set that comes out as apparently it was not a one set fits all but more a hand modified job per aircraft. If you screw up the profile and drilling you dont get a second go.

I think the main problem for NX611 dates back to her very misguided parking at Blackpool in our lovely salt air that has caused a lot of issues.I dont think that the airframe side of things is the issue its the small bits that can cause problems like generators, pumps, etc then the main parts like props but I believe from what I have been told the main issue is actually Main Undercarriage components and serviceable spares and brakes. The RAF have a fairly comprehensive spares source which the guys at East kirkby do not have access to. So to be prepared for any eventuality large or small they must build up at least three or four sets of everything from light bulbs to genrators,to pumps, to wheels and tyres and props etc.

They do not want to find themselves in a situation at a show having spent XX millions to put her back into the air to be grounded for god knows how long or for good at a strange airfield because pump 393 and associated parts are not available. They are being very sensible and also responsible owners of a piece of our aviation heritage and should be applauded and supported by words, deeds and a few quid from us all not criticized for not having rushed into getting her airworthy without full and careful planning and spares support.

Err, no it doesnt – its the same as a Vampire!

SEA Venom possibly, but even that would be tricky to move in one piece with outer wings off.

    Bruce

Sorry yes cracking up Sea venom is the one with stubs with the undercart in and the folding outer wings come off.I understand they are contemplating moving the one at DX like that.I have also seen a Vampire with engine removed but wings still on moved on a low loader as a wide load placed sideways and sloping on a frame,Not a sight for the feint hearted.
The ex DH machine/ex vintage pair spare was moved from Sealand to Harwarden that way after systems and engine runs to have final assembly for flight.Sadly the one lost at Biggin with Jim Kerr in the right seat..

We have been offered a D H Vampire F 3, as flown by the RCAF, for the museum.

Naturally it is 2,000 plus miles away and we are assessing our options to move it.

Does anyone have the exact width dimension with the outer wing panels removed?

From my recollection, the Vamp main oleos are mounted in the fuselage wing stub section and they retract outwards into the section of removable wing. If correct this would make it readily movable.

If the Vamp, with outer wing panels removed, can be rolled into a C-130 Herc, it could be a ‘no-sweat’ move! The length should not be a problem so the booms would not have to be removed.

I would like the confirmation on the width before I propose the solution.

    Many thanks!

I also think you are confusing Venom with Vampire the former has a centre section on its gear and is around 11 feet wide with out wings off.

    Vampire transport

Yes we have just moved three Vampires.

    Two T11 and a T22.

Its a fairly straight forward beast to dismantle as Bruce has said already.Sorry not running on my main computer at the minute so cant access everything.

Four guys a decent tool kit a couple of Two ton portable folding workshop cranes and some time in the workshop with some steel box section and some large castors or small solid wheels and you can make up your own transport stands etc,

The fuselage pod and engine will come in one piece.Approx 22 feet long by 5 feet wide by 7 feet tall weight roughly 1800 kgs.

Your wings are the biggest lump 17 feet long by 11 feet 6 inches wide or tall and weighing in at around 600 kgs each.

Then the booms and tail plane and a lot of panels etc.

If you wish I can mail you during next week a load of Pics on the transport stands we made up and the breakdown stuff on the vampire and some more detailed info on taking one down.

It is one of the most fairly easy little beasts to dismantle provided it has not been sat out in all weathers for years then they can be interesting.Once the engine bay covers are all off the pipe work etc is all accessible to disconnect.
And each wing is only held on by three pins ,the booms are only held on by a ring of bolts. Four bolts each side hold the tail plane on.

Please either PM me or send to my private mail you can also have a look at our web site for some photos of a dismantled vampire and its movement. As for wings going in a Fat Albert that might be your only real challenge.

what appears to be being overlooked in all the speculation is the fact that IF any aircraft are found that it doe snot mean they will be leaving Burma !!!.

With their track record it could be a case of thank you very much Mr Cundall now go home !!!. What ever is recovered will be for the Burmese authorities to decide what will happen to it.Speculation on the site of new purpose built factories etc to rebuild dozens of aircraft to fly I am sorry to say is just Hype and to keep the interest going. It could all end up in tears megga egg on face and the Burmese having a new wing of piston engined aircraft for their airforce.

Either that or the Dollar signs will start to spin and they will put such a daft value on them that no one will be able to afford them.

I think we should all wait and see what if anything comes out of any holes in the jungle. From experience we have recovered stuff in better condition out of the sea than has been found buried on dry land. One piece of land can be totally different in acidity than one 100 metres away no two holes can produce the same condition as no two sections of sea bed at different depths will ..
