I think it boils down to a certain gentleman (I shall call him that for want of another description)who had an emporium making and buying and selling spitfire parts. The problem was he used a lot of commercial grade materials instead of the proper stuff, some of what he sold was’nt technically his to sell and I think I got the number correct but he sold a certain spitifire identity to four well known war bird enthusiasts and collectors at the same time and that takes some doing.

Shall we say he gave reputable builders and rebuilders food for thought and a chill down the spine.I understand the CAA amongst others clipped his wings for him in a serious manner.

That is one of the reasons why I think you will find some owners are rather jittery about parts scrap or otherwise off their rebuilt aeroplanes going into other peoples static projects.

We have an understanding that anything we have or use of even manufacture ourselves is very clearly stamped as “not fit for flight” or “origin unknown” that way it should not find itself getting airbourne or can be implied as belonging to a certain aircraft.

At the end of the day if you buy something legitimately and you act responsibly with it then I feel positive there can be no legitimate argument from anyone unless you go painting every different part of your aircraft with the serial of the aircraft it came from then you would be asking for bother in one degree or another. If an owner finds out you have had a few bits from his rebuild how is he going to know what bits unless you have broadcast the fact to start with or they have not been given or sold to you with permission??
The latter could be grounds for someone asking for the stuff back I would suggest as its like you buying a car from someone and it wasnt theirs to sell you I think you may find yourself in an awkward corner as I suppose technically the parts being sold on without the owners permission could be construed as theft or the disposal of part of a contract for the rebuild??

    Busy year ahead for ARG.

Hopefully the Mk !! Spitfire will be complete for Christmas and ready for paint.

The mkIX fuselage will be out of Jig.

We will have all out parts in the UK for the Kraguj P2

The Whirlwind rear Fuselage and tail assembly will be well under way and the
much sought after loft drawings will appear from storage.

Our Flea will be complete and out on display.

Our Vampire T 11 will be out of storage and the fuselage repairs completed
and the wiring and systems will be well on the way to being re instated and we will be looking at commencing restoration work on the wings and undercarriage and tail assembly.

Oh and of course we will have been round a few shows including legends with the Whirlwind project stand .

So a pretty quiet year really.

Anyone in North Yorkshire want to come and play and join our enthusiastic teams of volunteers.

the only response I got was that the owner has got lots of information etc on disc and in paper form .I pushed the identity issue and got blanked with well you can visit Brooklands to view if you wish ?.

When it was pointed out that the Merlin being advertised was a dog the man spluttered and claimed to have viewed it,my reply was related to feeding his guide dog and repainting his dark glass’s and white stick and at that point he seemed to loose interest in speaking to me any more.(I cant think why !!!)

Obviously they want to make as much money as they can in commission I dont know what it is now a days but it used to be about 15% plus vat. So £120k = £18k plus 20% vat another£3,600 by heck that’s not shabby is it £21,600 for putting a description and some words in a catalogue then standing on an orange box and shouting at folks for 10 minutes I think we are in the wrong job chaps and I thought my accountant was on a good screw !!!!!

Seriously I have doubts that there is enough available to truly verify the identity and as for original bit s very little, what is there has been put together as far as I can establish using no released materials and with no verifiable paper trail my someone without the required approval so that what ever is there and has been put together is not worth a lot..

There are plenty of project guys with spits on this forum who could put together from new what is present for less than 10K
there are no spar booms or anything else significant except the cockpit stuff and some of that is repro not genuine and none of it original to the aircraft. My view a good project for a museum or collector £12k -£15K (oops sorry the decimal point is in a different place)unless you want to fight over it. I think someone could pay an awful lo tof money and get an awful lot of disappointment.

    Just posted on FB..

” Forget the telly – how about a V12, 27 litre, 1600 bhp RR Merlin for the corner of the lounge? I’ve just bought myself a Spitfire engine for the front room. Got to be one of the best sounding engines ever made – proper mint.” (GM)

I just hope it aint the one from a certain Dell Boy in Essex who had it on ebay then withdrew it then put it in the auction at Brooklands on 16th February .

Sorry if it is and your cheque hasnt cleared you still have time to change your mind and believe me if and when you see the engine you will want to change your mind!!!!!! very much if you have paid anything like the price he was talking as its a crash site engine very smash and grab full of filler very mangled, very seized and painted with black tar and a lavatory brush !!!

Does he say which one he bought? I’m remembering the one that has caused a lot of comment on here recently

    Richard

No that pillock is still trying to rip folks off at the Brooklands Auction in February.

I wish I knew about it as I am looking for one ???.

Anyone got a half decent crank case only they dont want as I have one with a damaged reduction gear case.and I could do with one unless someone has the front part of a crank case with the reduction gear end in good nick and then does someone know if we can then graft it onto my damaged engine ??

I dont do welding on castings :D:D:D:D:D

As money seems no object a complete new airframe built out of Carbon fibre and other composite bases like they do with modern airliners guaranteed to be long life airframe very durable etc.Trouble is if you have a misshap you have to clear an enormous area and get special disposal teams in etc to deal with all the needle stick injuries and HSE issues and thats before the CAA get involved.

C.A.A. and H.S.E. together on a Mossie project what a combination the only thing better would be to add EU aviation legislators in the mix the Ultimate S.N.A.F.U
