Its very interesting that Malta an EU member and one time only link with the outside world for Lybia seems to be keeping very silent and very neutral.
They received the two defecting aircraft in the early days and are also reported to have turned away one of Lybias VIP jets with Gaddafi’s daughter on board trying to leave her home but since then not a lot has been heard from them.Other than of course receiving the citizens of a number of countries staging through.
They also have a fairly adjacent ring side seat to events being not much above 65 odd miles away.
I wonder if Malta’s deep harbour’s and resources will be available to the international powers or if they will keep a fairly neutral stance ?.
Just a few photo’s to wet the appetite there are or were until last year many different types still in this scrap yard including Hastings,Canberra,Stuka (JU87),Sea Hawk,An unknown US aircraft and lots of unidentified stuff buried under old scrap vehicles and dock yard stuff last moved in the 1960’s.Yes the last photo you are not seeing things. We also pulled out wing parts from another aircraft of the same type, and at least one engine brand new just someone had put a lump hammer through the sump we had to remove it in bits as when we went back some one had surrounded the yard with houses.
Before you all start packing your bags these photo’s taken in 1993 I will try to post some more including underwater ones if I can get them to look decent enough
Just a few oldies I found the other day some blasts from the past.
Jerry Brewer
can you remember many moons agao you had been discussing crashed whirlwinds and you had info on one that had been cleared for a building site and the remains scrapped but also you had info on one aircraf that someone had recovered engine nacelles and undercarriage an dother stuff.do you still have the contact details please ?.
Mike
And found out about an engine nacelle & undercarriage section that had been recovered and was in a private collection.
cheers
Jerry
Ta Stu PM what I owe you for the copying costs.
Mike
Putting some orders in on Monday with the machine shop for some stuff if anyone wants anything please let me know as it will be another 3-4 weeks before we ask for anything else.
Rocketeer would you mind making some patterns of your windscreen frame for us and some detail sof the other items you have >
Mike
The best way to find out is to get one of the sets of drawings available on line from various sources and look up the differences if they are a decent set you will find the frames and fuselage drawings for both.
My post is a general one including the rise in taxation and perhaps I did not mak eit clear including changes from EU rules all this is not new it has been ongoing for a considerable time and for someone in business as they must run this as such and have the advice of people in the know not to or claim not to know what was in the pipeline borders on negligence I am sorry.
Either the people in charge and or the people giving advice are at fault .”I did not know your honour ” is not acceptable at a bankruptcy hearing !!! or any other for that matter.
They have a responsibility to the project and everyone who gives even ten pence to be aware of all the factors that could affect the project and its future operation or finance.Any company director should have the same basic information to hand and can be considered to be in deep water if he/she has not taken everything possible into account and planned accordingly and can also be held fully responsible should anything go wrong as a result.
I am not criticising I am pointing out fact. They have a responsibility to be aware of any possible legislation that can affect the project and its impact. If they are not then they are being very unwise
I know its been said before but who the hell is doing the business plans and the budgets for this project ?Mickey Mouse ?.
Come on its difficult to imagine that no one new about the changes in VAT and tax rebates etc.No one built in cost of consumables, rise in overheads caused by changes in taxation etc. Its not a new thing its been in th epipe line since the government came to power nearly 11 months ago and then we new that the VAT rise was going to be deffered !!!!.
I am not knocking the project the guys on the ground are doing brilliant work but some one behind a desk needs his Butt setting on fire with a blow lamp !!!!!
I hope he does not get paid for incompetence if he does perhaps the first donation shoul dbe all the money he has received on the back of the project alonbg with anyone else to do with the financial side that should be good for at least half of the needed amount if not more !!!
Personaly I feel that the principles that the Maltese authorities under the guidance of the War Museum and Malta Aviation Museum have established is ;If Human remains exist within the wreck then it is a war grave and should remain untouched !!!.Unless because of dredging or other accidental cause it is unintentionaly brought to the surface then the remains are dealt with in the appropriate manor. No Wrecks are raised or removed in Maltese waters without intensive research and investigation. For example from Finding Hurricane Z3055 it was nearly 2 years before everything had been fully checked and prepared and she was finally raised.
There are many accessible wrecks around the Maltese islands but if they are visited they are for the most part treated with respect one being the just post war wreck in St Pauls Bay area where the remains of the navigator are still with the aircraft but the pilot managed to get out.And also in some instances the relatives do not want the remains disturbed. Its like naval wrecks we dont go dragging war ships up because there none on display and there might be 329 crew on board that should have a decent burial I am sorry the same principle applies.
respect should be given to war dead of whatever nationality and not just on the principle of there arent many of those aircraft left so lets go and drag this one up regardless.there are alternatives to be considered.:)
sorry its a subject that can cause a lot of discussion and argument and very differeing opinions.
[QUOTE=Bruggen 130;1719525]Thats probably this one, I think it’s the year that the autogyro crashed.
Yes it looks right.Yuk the autogyro yep was working that day very messy trying to land when your eyeballs are around your ankles. If I remember typical airshow it had been ****ing it down and he went up to do a second turn to give the punters something to see.All very sad nearly as bad as the RR Spit doing loops down the runway and landed it smack 3/4 of the way around one. that day we had been positioned along the roadway that led to the MU and bits came flying past us another sad day.
Have you got the drawings for the back end ?.I could send you over what we have if it helps.I assume you are going from 19 back Fin post etc.
Mike
If you have them available look at ;30027 sht 22G, 30027 sht 24H, 30027 sht 102G and 30027 sht 107H. If you dont have them give me a PM and I will sort out some nice crisp versions.
All I can remember its a long way and you could get a lot of aeroplanes from the start to the finals doors and then some.I can even remember some funny incidents including a certain person towing out a very very important HS748 and he decied he did not need any one on the wing tips .Rule of thumb and all that and went for it !!! yoiu can guess what happened !!!.Then we had a VIP 748 with a lovely palm tree and an elephant painted on the nose and two days before the customers reps came someone noticed it only had THREE legs !!!!.
Those where the days !!!!!!!.
The first Victor K2 conversion on a practise flight for the airshow the following weekTony Blackman I think it was lined her up on the intersection gave some on the go levers and removed about 50 square yards of tarmac from behind him as he rolled.Very embarrasing.
One of the Comrods cant remember if it was XV147 or XV148 doing trials for underwing stores and raced a concrete torpedo down the runway !!!.
All good fun.
It would be brilliant if the Flight sheds and runway could be preserved for light aviation or even a Duxford of the North. Now that would really be something !!!! I would vote for that and as its only 2 hours away put some time in and even consider moving back over there and workshops in to boot !!!!
very pleased with the disc Mike, thanx….
have you or Jerry got any cockpit drawings with dimensions please? especially the panel area and instrument panel? cheers
A bit thin on the ground with dimensioned stuff and definately not got any panel dimensions as yet. That is why we are hopefull we could get access to some of Rays material as he has/had the relevent information and drawings on the panels and cockpit upper area dimensions.Other than that we are going to have to take a long and detailed trip to Norwich to get the info of his work on display. The latter sounds likely as no one has responded to our requests for access to his material and as we hoped to partly dedicate the project to his work that is a little dissapointing to say the least but thats life I suppose.
