The UN could demand that their air force be grounded. Is the Charles De Gaulle back from the Arabian Sea yet? Is the USS Enterprise carrier group still in the Med or has it transited the Canal for the Arabian Sea? Could the Italians, Spaniards and French scare up some CAP fighters/tankers and base them in say Sigonella and run cab ranks over Tripoli?
Whats this someone trying to organise another Bahgdad Airshow ??? a bit dodgy I would think all things considered at the moment to many arab states trying to liberate themselves if europe starts interfereing to much you could end up with them all joining together as brothers against the infidels !!!!

This one has gone….from my friend:
Could you repost to those flypast forum the fact that a search was undertaken by Westland Archivist for this prompted by my offer of Geophy’s equipment to track down the cockpit and if found loaning it to BDAC.
He discovered talking to a retired site employee that the cockpit was placed in the landfill but due to it sitting near a river Westlands were worried about contamination issue, so it was removed and scrapped off site. Its not there any more.
Just discovered this trawling back through time.Rocketeer do you happen to have any info on what and when in the time line this happened ?.
Anyone have any notion what might become of lossie if they did pull the pin on tornado?. Typhoons from a closed leuchars perhaps?.
I would say come a bit further South If I was you about the same level as North Yorkshire !!!!!
it would be rather unfortunate if instead of attacking th epopulace the military turned its weapons on the man himself.I think after these two guys decided to leave that he must be worried what the rest of his armed forces will do ?
Probably impound them on the grounds of illegally entering their airspace with a fighter jet. A nice legal slight of hand to avoid any issues.
Looks like the aviation museum at Taqali will be getting an nice addition to its collection !!!!. Same thing happened with a smugglers DC3 a few years back impounded and transported to the museum.
seems stupid at a time the government are spending millions of pounds on breaking up perfectly serviceable tornadoes and stock piling all the parts to over flowing in storage .
Hi
I always heard different stories, but all involved it being buried, the photo of the aircraft after engine removal for a rotor blade test rig, shows the aircraft in a sad state, but pretty much intact.
The most likely one I heard was that it is near a stream and westlands don’t want it touched as it was their dumping ground and would cause enviromental issues.
Good luck, I would suggest a google earth search first for likely spots before approaching them.
cheers
jerry
Getting the permission may not be the issue in the end its proving its there to start with to get the permission may be the final hurdle. There does not seem to be much documented about the aircrafts fate !!!!.
Reading on here about the Dartmoor wrecks in a bog, there would appear to be a lot of interested parties who would like to attempt to find them.As the terrain does not seem amenable to standard transport could not a small hovercraf do a search with underground radar?I am sure it would not cost a fortune to hire one or get sponsors, after all it is a WW2 icon most of us want to see!!Maybe even the marines would assist/!!Thier just down the road in Plymouth!!!
finding the approximate location to then narrow down does not seem to great an issue from what I understand a number of individuals on this forum have been a bit closer to at least one of these aircraft than they are currently letting slip. Its the actual raising of the wreckage from the mush !!!!! that coul dbe the bigger issues.
Hi
As it is a year on and there is all this interest in the whirlwind…
I thought I would bump this, I still haven’t found out anymore info.
cheers
Jerry
Thanks Jerry for the update I had missed this post first time around

Right guys a challenge I know you love them.
I am gathering information together on the “alledged” burial of the Whirlwind Hack to approach Westlands.
I have so far two different dates and two different explanations to the end of this aircraft.
One says she was broken up in either 1946 or 1947
One says she was dismantled then used for practice on the fire dump in either 1946 or 1947 both then say she was buried on the airfield perimeter.
I have been getting feed back that is very sceptical of the above does anyone have any further information documents articles etc to back up any of this so we can pursue the matter further.
Dont want to look very daft get permission to dig the airfield up and find the aircraft ended up in a scrap yard a mile down the road !!!
Mike
Fine Tony we will see what we can dig up during this week please PM your contact details as I cant seem to find them I did have them a long time ago.
Woul dbe willing to swap for the info you have then it is a mutual share of information .
The conservative/Liberal alliance arent in charge of the budget for the aircraft are they ?. I am sorry but with all the suggested past errors it sounds like a politicians planning meeting to claim his expenses !!!!.
The first part was an attempt at humour, whilst raising awareness of the recently launched 2011 event – hence the original smiley!
The second part was a serious attempt to suggest to you an opportunity of perhaps meeting like minded individuals who have pursued similar rebuilds to what is being discussed for the Whirlwind. They then displayed their efforts at the event e.g. the excellent Hornet rebuild by one of the forumites. Others have just brought plans or set up PCs showing CAD drawings to illustrate their project! 🙂
Sounds good sadly I shall be out of the country for two weeks around that time and wont be able to make it down from North Yorkshire unless things change in the mean time,
I have a back burner 1/4 cockpit planned…gathering the stuff you saw in the photo….I may bring a selection of bits to the ‘Fest
If you want any reference material let me know Tony and we will see if we can help !!!.
why not break it down into sections.we will build the structure and you guys supply the contents ?.
I think that we should all info share also. What we plan to do is put a copy of all the stuff we gather from whatever source and put it onto a disc then share copies of it free of charge to major contributors. Also to give those same contributors the opportunity if they wish to say only have a cockpit section that we would make for a donation plus materials costs a kit of parts for the cockpit section structure. This would be limited to just a few obviously because of the time and effort invovlved. We would hope that you guys in return would be willing to share what you have on the aircraft. As my dad used to say many heads are better than one.
So there you are Old Spitty does your lot want a Whirlwind cockpit section ?.And help support the build of a full one ?.
