The prototype and some very early Mk.1s had a domed “hubcap” but the flatter disc fairing was fitted to a lot of Mk.V’s. I think early hub diameters were 10.25″ and the 3 spokes were 12″. But there are more knowledgable Spit buffs on the forum.

    John

The rims we have in vary but we have two around 10 inch one takes 7.5 x 10 and the 8x 10 1/4.Had a ****** of a time getting tyres recently i know Dunlop are still producing but they are around £270 each.
A company in the US is quoting $268 each fro mains plus $65 each for tubes.
These smaller rims one is solid and the other has a bead ring the latter seems to suffer badly and worse than the other type for corrosion and the older and uloved they are the worse they are and more likely to fall apart.

Both use the same size centre hub bearings though so the stub appears to be a standard .

A lot of horrendous condition wheels tyres and Undercarriage legs recently advertised and for daft money!!!.

It seems this thread got totally out of hand after a minority made claims with no substance over a incident they did not witness.
As I see it the facts are a Aircraft had a collision with a object that should not have been there, And the pilot then managed to land the aircraft without further damage to the aircraft or harm to himself. Anything else is speculation and assumption as none of us were in the cockpit at that time so none of us can say what the pilot did or did not see, As until the accident is investigated that is as far as it can go. Luckily because the number one witness(the pilot) is still alive the investigation will be able to know everything that occured in that cockpit.

Personally its sad that people want to sully a well respected, Skilled and safe pilot and for that reason I do not mention his name in my posting nor make any assumptions, I only wish others could do the same.

On a lighter note its good to see both pilot and Aircraft live to see another day.

I second the thoughts echoed here,I was following with interest and a one stage thought we would get handbags a 50 paces but thats just me I suppose

Thanks for all your input guys I did not think they looked remotely Spitfire and I have seen some interesting combinations.
I have passed your suggestions on and until he can get some more definitive info he has taken them off sale.
Sensible chap its a pity a lot more dont do that and insist on listing all sorts of things as Bof B when they are blatantly not but the auction web sites dont seem to enforce the rules when it comes to desricbing something or misdescribing it.

Anyway think we might have a new convert as before now he had never heard of this forum and here was me thinking everyone new about this forum..

For some events, I know planning permission is required by local councils.

    Martin

Oh yes the old purple plan !!!.regardless if you have CAA permission it dont mean you can go ahead and hold your little or large event as you may find all sorts of very official looking and some uniformed individuals knocking on your door asking why have you not consulted us ???.And then telling you all your planning is for nought as you aint doing it there and then or even at all.

That would account for it then thanks guys its just the direction of travel from where I was near Ripon and he appeared to be going West -East .Towards Thirsk but it must have been Leeming and Topcliffe circuit traffic that routed him that way.

And I thought I had read somewhere thatthe Newcastle based aricraft had moved ?.

Hi Can anyone recommend the best place to buy aircraft chocks preferably at a discounted price? We are close to getting XV752 onto her concrete base outside the 2366 (Bletchley Park) Sqn ATC HQ. Although we have a set of chocks we are thinking we probably need a second set to chock both front and rear wheels.

Also, anyone with any odeas where we might get hold of a hunter cockpit cover. We have the cockpit section of F6 XF522 on the Sqn and would like to get a poper cover or something close for it.

    Thanks.

We have a set of heavy duty wooden ones with anchor chains and you are welcome to have them if you can arrange someone to pick them up .

This is going to make me more unpopular than I am anyway, but, did anyone else think that watching that thread was a bit like watching a car crash while being unable to do anything about it?

Before I get completely shot down, let me explain. Ben’s motive are obviously honest and genuine. Above all he’s passionate, but sometimes that passion has to be tempered with common sense. On several occasions I cringed at the direction that thread was taking and was sure there would be some acrimony enter into it at some stage. I don’t know whether ben’s still involved with the Shackleton now. I don’t need to know. The sad thing is that harm has come to both parties in this I’m sure.

Sometimes you need to take a step back and reassess things. Learn to walk confidently before trying to enter a sprint. I’m sure Ben will bounce back, enthusiasm undaunted but perhaps a little wiser. And if he has parted company with the Shackleton project, I’m sure they will be all the poorer for the loss too. I’m sure there are lessons to be learned.

Ben, you have the desire and the opportunity to become, in future, a stalwart in aircraft preservation. Don’t let what has happened to at least one former member here happen to you. They got c0cky, they got greedy and at the end of the day I’m not sure whether he lost interest in historic aviation or historic aviation lost interest in him.

Having read your other thread on Jaguars I can offer no advice on what you may/should acquire. Personally, I have a soft spot for the Vampire. Whatever you decide I know there is absolutely no shortage of good advice available on this forum.

    Regards,

    kev35

I Fully endorse what Kev says .Having been involved with both the inside and outside of Mr Collets empire and some of the strange twists and turns shall we call them I have great sympathy for anyone caught up in the politics rather than preservation aspects of the empire and its changes in mood and decisions both on and below the surface. If that makes sense ?.

Yes there are many projects out there and as well as restoring war birds I own two Vampires they are as Kev says a good introduction if you can get hold of one, there are a good few out there to be had but for the most part they need extensive woodwork as usual on the pods as some enthusiasts seem to misunderstand the differences in behaviour of different wooden materials and introdicing things like plastic padding etc.

What ever you decide to do and the direction to take there are as Kev says plenty of us on the forum will to give tips and suggestions and advice some good some indifferent and some debateable but thats life !!!.

If you want any information for a project etc drop me a PM we have an extensive library from WW1 right up to the mid 1950’s while not everytype a good selection .Also have some damn good contacts for good priced materials for statics as well as some really helpfull companies for machining and casting stuff.

Good Luck with what you do.

Fly-ins in the US are generally a fairly loose affair. There can be a lot of differences between the events. No aerobatics, no low passes (usually some high passes are done), sometimes fun stuff like spot landing contests and flour bombing. Depends a LOT on who’s putting it on, what kind of airfield, what kind of aircraft/pilots are attracted to the event.

    Ryan

It is or was all defined in one of the CAP’s I am a bit rusty the last shows I organised where at Barton in the 1990’s (last one we ssadly lost the Mosquito)but I think it was CAP 642 .Anyway if you go to the CAA web site you can search for the appropriate CAP for shows and displays and it goes into great detail as to what is defined as a display under the rules and there fore attracts one hell of a lot of paperwork and effort months in advance to even get a sniff at getting permission and display authorisation. There is also no such thing with the CAA as a grey area its either Black or White ,some folks have tried in the past to be cleaver with the rules and have come a bit unstuck and the vast majority of Pilots with a DA on their ticket value it to much.

Firebex – I don’t entirely disagree, but I presume you are excluding the Lightning from your comment………

I think its one of the few aircraft that the rest of the world where scared of and gave a great sigh of relief when we did not develope it further and took it out of service.

I think I can put you all out of your misery.
We have had in one of the Lytham St Annes replica spitfires for major surgery and whilst it has been with us they have been using one of the other machines available to them.Their main display machine is now back in service the other one has gone back doing other work including some film stuff down in Southern climes !!!
