J-10B is a more advanced design than T-50. J-10B has DSI, T-50 does not. J-10B is not exactly a version of J-10. Like F-18E to F-18A/C, J-10B is essentially a completely new plane compared to J-10A. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z6dwLp1KFxs

Was MMRCA about increasing capability by purchasing 20 year old technology? or padding government officials’ bank accounts?

Excelent question to be asked to a certain Jack De Vries, just change the name of the program… Or we could ask to the 2008 Norwegian defense secretary how he feels about a certain report… Etc, etc, etc

Short answer, NO, daf idea. You dont create requirements for a cheap seven ton conventional aircraft and then go for a 13+ ton stealth strike fighter… The indians want to increase the number of sqns, not slash 1/3 of their fleet because of bleeding expensive kit.

yes but if you look closely at those 7

UK – f-35 user and major contributor to typhoon. also major F-35 partner. trying desperately to get rid of its existing aircraft.
Italy – f-35 user, will use it for a2g
Spain – f-35 user but too poor to fund further integration on their own
Germany – your hope lies there but they are comfortable with their Tornado and they lack political will to do t on their own
Saudi Arabia – many other aircraft already with good A2G capabilities
Austria – they dont want A2G capabilities
Oman – will consider it only if some one else pays the cost

Re check GB (more specificaly the dates of the introduction of main atg munitions on typhoon and then cross it with the dates of the bow out of the Tornado and the introduction of JCA) and Spain (absolutely no connection with the JSF program).

One thing that surprises me about the Typhoon is the max payload — according to some sources it’s 7,500 kg. Not too shabby one may say, but the tiny Rafale can carry 9,500; Rafale has higher MTOW but lower empty weight; it also has larger internal fuel capacity, it seems.

So if a focus is on payload and range then Typhoon seems to be behind not just the F-15 and F-35, but also far behind the Rafale. Max payload of the Typhoon is comparable to the F-16.

The Typhoon has a slightly larger internal fuel capacity than the Rafale. The Rafale, in terms of payload and mtow its an alien, it beats the crap out of everything that flies and (slightly) aproaches its size/weight.

most major eurofighter partners are f-35 committed which will provide them their a2g needs.

Of the four original partners , two of them are commited to the JSF, and only one, Italy, intends to use it has is main ATG workhorse. Of the seven Eurofighter operators only two, etc, etc, etc…

Start with the MBB Lampyridae, stick a pair of J85’s and two tails on it. “Presto” a credible design…

It is very likely that Spectra and the low observable design of Rafale are too much for the old technology of CAPTOR. It is doubtful if there is any chance to correct this short coming with the dated technology used by CAPTOR. A working AESA might change this, but only Rafale has a working AESA – probably even increasing the superiority of Rafale.

Bold claim (bit silly). EPAF pilots have tracked, locked and obtained bvr fire solutions using the AN/APG-66V2. Germans and Spanish pilots did the same with the AN/APG-65. Captor is a vastly superior set by comparison with these old designs. Undoutebly that it can be jammed, fooled, tricked, whatever, but claiming that the norm versus the sensor suite of the Typhoon is something akin to near invisibility is going into Klingon sci fi.

F-15A could carry bombs right from the start. The USAF did not make use of the capability though, Israel for example did.

I dont remember one single fighter jet in these four decades who couldnt carry bombs right from the start… Aero is right, the Typhoon right from the beggining was marked to substitute the Jag, the F-15 was not not, it was a pure air defense fighter, “not a pound for air to ground”, remember? Yes its pylons could carry bombs and its radar had some ATG modes, but that was it, this didnt make it a “swingrole” fighter, that happened with the Strike Eagle. The Typhoon on the other hand was a swingrole right from the beggining, dont confound a very delayed weapons integrations schedule with “not designed”. Just to remember the Typhoon´s over Lybia were Tranche 1´s airframes.

Wasn’t that almost word-for-word the criticism of the Spruance’s back in the day….funny how history repeats itself!.

I am not seeing the LCS taking 61 VLS for Tac Tom (or its replacement). The Spruance´s at least had the space to be upgraded, the LCS…

I merely used it as an example of upgraded legacy systems…The F-16 AESA, is hardly as capable, and if a version is to be developed that incorporates the latest – Stealth- Plug ins (like the SE), it would still far short of capability, and would cost a decent amount, give LMA would have to boost the Viper production rate to close to 200 jets per annum, and design a new version. But its all a bit redundant, since the F-35 is not going anywhere…

I was sugesting that the USAF Could acquire today’s block 60 or V for the bulk of the sqn’s. Worst case ATA scenarios would be delt by the Raptor, worst case ATG scenarios would be delt by long range pgm munitions and a new platform, more specificaly General Atomics Avenger would/could be that platform. But it is redundant i have this feeling that the USAF is prepared to slash at least one third of its sqn’s in order to get Dave.

An interesting conspiracy theory I came up with, after a bottle of (French) wine:

Dassault’s main customer these days is actually China…

It would benefit Dassault’s interest to sign the agreement with India, however it could benefit China’s interest if the MMRCA deal was delayed as much as possible… the Rafale jets will significantly strengthen Indias defence once they are in place.

Perhaps Dassault gets to sell X number of business jets (to China) for each extra month of delay…?

    :very_drunk:

Try this next time (actually its very decent):

And before someone starts, its entirely on topic… :very_drunk:

The Alternatives, aren’t exactly cheap…Boeing could do well to offer a 50 million price tag for F-15 Silent Eagle, all kitted out, but even for them, to get a cost much below 80-90 million a pop is going to be tough, given that its a newish product.

    Bring

Why would anyone replace Vipers, classical Hornets and A-10´s with the latest iteration of the F-15 Eagle?! Its almost like replacing the F-111 with the B-1.
On a theoretical scenario of “JSF Doomsday” (not going to happen), there are severall alternatives. For the USAF LM could deliver hundreds of AESA equiped Vipers at short notice, and i am sure that General Atomics would be delighted to deliver a decent number of those Avenger C´s, the US Navy would be buying more SH´s, the International partners would be choosing from four or five alternatives.
The chaps who would get screwed would be the Marine Corps and (on a grandiose scale) the Royal Navy with their two 65000 ton Heli carriers.

    Cheers
