If you by “blue water work” mean watching somalians on jet-skii’s armed with a shotgun, ok, (but you get a better view from an osprey)
just dont go within reach of any hostile patrol aircraft without AEW & CAP with the multi large slow target.
And since those patrol a/c has such phenomenal range, a better idea is to leave it at the dock and save some fuel.
I would imagine that these chaps (below) have designed their navies to take on the RSSGN (Royal Somalian shotgun Navy :D) then?
Navies like the JMSDF, ROKN, Armada Española, RAAN, PLAAN, etc, dont have AEW assets.
There are just five navies in the world who do have AEW assets

If the problem is the lack of a buddy buddy refueling pod there´s nothing stoping it behing integrated on Dave B. Integrating such a one is not exactly rocket science and is almost certainly going to end up being done by the US Navy/Marine Corps.
And if by “decent AEW” you mean the E-2D Hawkeye, have you consulted the MOD and NAO budget documents?
There are slightly more than two billion pounds earmarked to develop and acquire the entire JCA fleet, thats a bit more than one sqn of fighters and there´s almost no money earmarked for MASC.
On the foreseable future (decade at least) MASC is the Sea King flogged to death, its substitute will be whatever is cheapest at the time and if they can salvage something from the Asac7 systems it will end up on whatever airframe is chosen. Anything else is a pipe dream.
