Capability thing is done..now whoever provides the cheapest prices [ and offsets] is gonna win!

So what is the current estimate of Rafale and Typhoon unit costs?

The current estimates for the RAFALE or the Typhoon are worthless in this case, from the entire 126 fighter order, only the first eighteen will be built in Europe the rest will be assembled in India. Its a similar deal to the MKI or the Hawk, in both cases (or in the older Jaguar deal) the fact that the aircrafts were mainly assembled in India had a massive impact in the unit cost, the same will happen with the MMRCA.

    Cheers

Crossing my fingers for the future threads dont turn into another round of “Phoon versus Fale” flame wars.

Could the Litening III image be link16ed from the Tornado?

Yes, it can be the case.

Nicolas meant that the Typhoon’s aren’t self designating.

But they are (at least it seems so, on the other hand the Tornado could be donwloading Litening imagery to the Phoon through Link16), it seems that Flight Global might have not got it quite right.

The Royal Air Force pilot who carried out the first operational Typhoon aircraft strike on a ground target has been describing the mission.

The first strike was made against a Libyan regime main battle tank during a mission on Tuesday, 12 April.

The pilot said: “I left Gioia Del Colle in a mixed pair with a Tornado GR4.

“We’d been tasked to Misratah in the West of Libya, which is pretty much a city under siege, with significant numbers of attacks against the civilian population from pro-regime forces. We were looking along one of the main supply routes in Misratah when we came across a compound with around 10 – 15 main battle tanks in.

“We reported our findings to the command and control assets we work with and shortly thereafter, were cleared to engage.
“At that point, we generated coordinates for the targets and dropped weapons. Each time we assessed the likely weapon effect and whether there would be any collateral damage implications.

“It was a precision attack from a significant altitude.

“To be honest, I was a little bit nervous but you just revert to the training you’ve done before. I’ve dropped a significant number of weapons from the Typhoon in training. It felt no different from that, only this time I was even more relieved to see the bomb go exactly where it should have done, in the Litening III image displayed in my cockpit.”

“We have proven that the jet can carry weapons a long distance, drop them accurately, land and get pumped full of fuel, reloaded with weapons and go and do it again, day in day out. That makes this capability enduring, and while it may seem like a milestone to some, it’s just a hurdle that had to be overcome at some point. It has been done, and we will drop more over the life of the aircraft. I think people are just pleased we’ve got the first one out of the way.”

I didn’t say it was. But it certainly wasn’t American.

Also it wasnt exactly a “fighter”, but yes i had forgot the F-1.

It will be nothing short of a miracle for an European company to win that one.
Japan never, ever, has bought anything but an American fighter.

    Well, with this exception:

I Could except that the Rafale is the more developed aircraft out of the two at the moment although theres very little in it. I also think that the typhoon in 10 years will far outstip the Rafale.

Looking at the “Typhoon 2020” concept there´s not much in that project that the 2013 Rafale doesnt have…

Indians need a complet combo ready to fight, not a spoil brat royalty pooring salt on eggs !

I would imagine that you had access to the Indian RFP?

When Eurofighter claimed to have defeated F-15 over Scotland and F-16 elsewhere, nobody asked for salt, or ROE, or independent verification.

Actually, several of us did ask those questions in this same forum.

Everyone & their mother know it’s 10 tons for a Rafale, now let’s see those sources for ferry range.

    Nic

I would be astounded if the Ferry Range for the Dassault Fighter wouldnt be “gargantuous”. It has a very, very respectable internal fuel fraction, coupled with five external wet points and 2000 l external tanks and i am willing to bet that it outranges its european competition with ease.

is zero fuel mass the same as empty weight?

No, its not, compare the F-22 Raptor “zero mass fuel” on that chart with the official empty weight numbers released by the USAF.

can you link to the 9400 kg number?

I am highly interested on that one, every single presentation by Dassault in Brasil quoted the Rafale C equiped with the heavier RBE-2 AESA with a clean weight of 10 tons.

And a tested and operational AESA is vaporware for EF, while all other contenders will have an operational AESA by 2013.

Hardly, the Russian AESA is totaly dependent on external orders, the Swedish one goes the same way.

Doesn’t make it a successful project. If comparing external orders could make sense, comparing total backlog is pure fantasy.
Independently of an AESA radar and the cost of bringing the plane to maturity, does India want to join a inefficient and ineffective partnership and be part of the mess ?

That “inefficient and inefective partnership” is delivering sixty fighters a year.
And that inefficient and ineffective partnership already won more external orders than the two others european competitors put together.
If thats ineffective, i dont want to know what you call its competition…
