The more I hear of BAes UAV programme, the more I like it.

Anyone else read it? Any comments?

    Swerve

Just one, i do really, really, really hope that the British MOD dont the “can” the entire SUAVE program through an “off the shelf” buy of a few more Reapers…
    Fingers crossed for Mantis.

whatever who write the article, any mature people would conter with arguments to defend thier chapelle!

Well, what was the part about costs and over reliance on ATA that you didn´t understood?
And how in the Sweet Name of Jesus are the Brits going to use the F22 on their new 65000 ton VSTOL aircraft carriers?
And having a massive “budget crush” in hands, where the hell, is the British MOD going to find the money to buy a few sqn´s of the MOST EXPENSIVE JET FIGHTER IN HISTORY?
And to fight whom? Yes, that “godamned Russians”…
Yes, the Russians are going to pick a fight with an Alliance composed of 27 countries who together are responsable for 70% of the ENTIRE WORLD DEFENCE BUDGET…

    It´s a “koopism”…
That text was made by Carlo Koop.
I am not one for going on a personal attack, but on these last day´s Air Power Australia has gone on a “rampage”, they have proposed the Raptor for the US Navy (grand idea, let´s pick the most expensive fighter EVER, and make it even MORE EXPENSIVE by making it “carrier compatible”, but hey, Peter Goon swears that this “simple” operation it´s only going to cost 230 million$!!!!), for the Marine Corps (!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!), and now for the RAF.
And the argument it´s alway´s the same, the UBBER SU-35 his going to conquer earth!

In the last two months APA have issued three interesting documents that mentions the RAF, or at least, it´s future backbone, the Typhoon. The first proposes to transform the Royal Air Force into a F-16 Viper ONLY force, deleting the entire Typhoon fleet because it´s too costly and over dependent on the ATA mission, then they sing “Halelujah” for DTI/Bill Sweetman latest ppt who highly praises the Eurofighter, and finnaly, this last document, the “Eurocanard/F35 his rubish, the Ubber Flanker his coming, buy a Raptor now”. WHAT?!!!!

In 1944 a certain General Anthony McAuliffe (commander of the 101st at Bastogne) made a famous remark that could very well apply to these latest documents coming from APA…

will the Captor E look anything like this.

    http://i41.tinypic.com/2vdfyih.jpg

That design was a late 2006 working project.
If that design his indeed chosen, his a hell of a breakthough, the entire pedestal rotates (imagine the antena rotating 360º), that combined with the 45º cant angle gives it a (theoretical) massive coverage area in comparison with fixed antenas of the same size, we could be speaking of a 50% increase in detection area (not range).
But this design might have a problem with weight (and cost)…
The design his so neat, that i would be amazed if that´s the one chosen! 😀

The original paper that Bill mentions his this one:

By the same estimate so was the F 16 you could say because UAE may supply Pakistan with Block 60s.

The truth is that all Aircraft are contenders. The Typhoons position was strong offlate with EADS being selected for LCA consultancy. EJ 200 being considered for Tejas and the problems with Americans over EUM.

With Meteor available in 2012 it would have been possible to deliver EF to India without Ameircan strings. One of its plus points. Now that is out of the window.

    Quite right.

Yes, this “clueless idiot” will say again. TVC has very, little effect on supersonic turnrates compared to aerodynamic variables. Maybe this clueless idiot has, shall we say a mild amount of experience in the field 😉

Fed up with talking to complete muppets now

    Another “clueless idiot” right here!

Just for the records, i am going to repeat myself, the Raptor 2D TVC his locked on a fixed position at transonic/supersonic speeds…

Where did I say the Python had TVC? It doesn’t need it. The AIM-7M wasn’t a bad missile at all, but being semi-active homing definitely put the pilot at risk, having to wait until impact to maneuver. The USN had HMS before Israel or Russia, on the F-4s. More emphasis was placed in the BVR realm, which led to the AMRAAM.

Dont try to make a point when you dont have one, it´s childish…
What you wrote was that the Russians had copy the Israeli HMS/Python combo, wich his utter ********.

Like I said only the Typhoon has HMS the Rafale do not. Are you saying that the Raptors super manaeuvarability will count for nothing against the HMS combo ?

    Yes

The faster you go, the less advantage the TVC brings to the table. TVC his wonderful for noise pointing, almost useless for ITR/STR at high subsonic/transonic speeds (but hawfully good for loosing energy). This is so much a factor that the 2D TVC of the F22 his blocked on a fixed position at transonic/supersonic speeds, the exact regime that the Raptor AND the Typhoon were designed to fly/fight. And the basic numbers (TW Ratio, wing loading, etc) of these two aircrafts are very, very close.
There´s no “Raptors super manaeuvarability” when facing the likes of a Phoon (evolved Eagle/Flanker, pick your choice) at high subsonic/transonic/Supersonic speed, any of these aircrafts have hit the “human factor” threeshold.

    Raptor Moto
“Fly fast, high, undetected, be the first to see, be the first to shoot, get the hell ou of there AND dont mix it up at WVR, it´s a pig fight, you´l only get dirty”

    Cheers:)

Was he actually escorted at some point in his flight?

Yes, by a pair of SU-15´s.

Which they copied from the Israelis and the Python. Of course if they were unable to force the US/Western aircraft into a WVR fight, they were at a BVR disadvantage.

    They copied WHAT from WHOM?!!!!!

Now could you explain how in the sweet name of jesus the Russians copied an Israeli system before the IDF/AF had actually received the darned hardware?

And could you explain why the technological solutions in the Russian/Israeli HMS and AAM´s are so diferent?
Yep, the Python thrust vectoring, oh wait, it doesnt have one…

And yes, that magnificent BVR AAM, the AIM-7 Sparrow…

A few months ago I watched quite an interesting documentary on Discovery called; “Carrier At Sea”. A US Navy one, can’t remember which one, but I was shocked to hear that the landing deck IS NOT armoured. They, or he, more or less said it doesn’t need to be because we have adequite air defence…..Didn’t the US Navy think the same during WWII?….Then look what happened….

There´s a certain Royal Navy who his about to acquire two 65000 tons Carriers without armoured decks. 😉
And the day´s of the dive bomber are over.

    Cheers

And which avionics package on the Fulcrum/Flanker before 1990 was superior to the F-15C/F-16C/F-18C/F-14D?

    The combo R-73/HMS…
