Cheaper? Weeeell, I don’t think so. Anyways, a strategic decision for serious anti-ship and offensive capability, versus a more defensive Gripen NG. Might not solve the fighter problem, though.

There´s a very nice pdf with the evaluation here: http://www.regjeringen.no/upload/FD/Temadokumenter/Fremtidig-kampflykapasitet_anbefaling_311008.pdf

What caught my atention was the cost estimates (page 39 onwards). It´s now official, Lock Mart his offering the F-35A for (roughly) the same acquisition and logistics costs of a Block50+ Viper!
Those numbers are “optimistic” to say the least!!
Now, i just hope that the Norwegian MOD demands a fixed cost contract before signing anything, wich after the “we just need to sign in 2014” comment his far from guaranteed.

Why do i have the feeling that there´s going to be a lot of heart attacks in several MOD´s when the actual bill his delivered around 2013?

sorry but ark and Lusty have both been on ops now the most recent was a joint ops with the amphibious of France in Scotland and Lusty i think is on FOST

You have taken the “NOW” too literally 😀

In the last years there have been several times that both Ark and Lusty have been docked together. The old rule “three units if you want one of them at sea” applies, and specially with old ships.
On a major emergency the RN could throw both “to the crunch”, escorted with a decent ASW/AAW screen and with a few Harriers, but it has to be a reallY MAJOR International problem, if not…

The target is illuminated. Against a single target you could guide all the missiles with just one illuminator.

    ?!

That´s correct, but that´s not the point (at least i thought so)…
Number of aerial targets getting… well, targeted, was the main comparison being used, or did i got it all wrong (again).

Try it with the following: (please 🙂 )

I’ve read that a Tico can keep 24 in the air at once with up to 8 in their final phase of flight at any given time (with time-sharing on the illuminators- obviously geometry effects this). Also factor in ESSM.

    “Time sharing the illuminators”?!

For the last two seconds of flight an ESSM must have continuous radar illumination, no “time-sharing” arrangement here…
A Tico has three illuminators, that´s three ESSM or Standard SAM´s being guided in their final phase of flight.

I don’t know where all this speculation is coming from, the RAF will get all 232 EFs it’s signed on for, the FAA will wind up with between 72 and 90 RN owned JSF (8×9 or 10×9), with the RAF getting similar numbers plus the frames for the extra units (op con rotational reserve etc) which will be shared with the navy (but RAF staffed), these orders will be stretched out until well past the in service date of HMS: PoW, but we will get them.

And as for not being able to deploy any carriers at all for part of the year, what on earth makes you think that, 6 month deployment/refit cycles, correctly arrnaged mean that at least half the navy should be available at all times, now whether we get enough ships to form a proper fleet or not, well that’s another question>

It comes from the fact that the present FAA fast jet fleet comprises something like nine Harriers owned and partially manned by the RAF… And his Majesty MOD has already declared (several years ago) that the entire JSF fleet will be owned by the RAF.
And it´s not exactly news that the RN his incapable of deploying carriers for part of the year NOW.

With the Euro at $1.29, & the pound at $1.64, Eurofighter dollar prices are dropping fast. Good for sales?

    It worked in Austria…

Its not really a major problem IMO, they need the aircraft one way or another, anyway.

    150-88=62

If it gets real bad, reduce the order of F35’s to between 80 and 100 and make them get rid of the “Joint” designation, make them completely RN owned.

The RAF received 170 of the ADV variant of the Tornado and 165 Jaguars for a total of 18 or 19 squadrons, many of which were withdrawn from service after the Cold War. Add on that several of the Harrier GR squadrons have converted to the Typhoon and we are talking 350+ aircraft replaced by 232. The RAF will need every Typhoon it can get its hands on just to replace the remaining Tornado F3 Squadrons.

The RAF is also operating 84 Tornado GR.4’s operationally in 7 squadrons with a further 26 in the OCU. This is a further 110 Aircraft that will either have to be replaced by F35’s or another aircraft in the next 10-20 years.

    StevoJH

I can see the RAF operating seven sqn´s worth of Typhoon´s, plus an OCU, three sqn´s of JSF, plus an OCU, the Tornado fleet being “flogged to death” and being replaced around 2025/2030 by something like 100 units of “Son-of-Taranis”.
And if someone asks for the “FAA fast jet fleet”?
What FAA fast jet fleet?! 🙁

    Here:

“Another very serious problem is that the UK seems to be legally committed to ordering next year 88 Tranche 3 Typhoons at an estimated cost of £7 billion (I’ve been unable to find an official cost), but the MOD simply doesn’t have the budget to buy both these and a significant number of JCA’s simultaneously. With an either/or choice becoming inevitable, senior Royal Air Force officers are hinting that if the service absolutely had to make a choice between Typhoon Tranche 3 and the Joint Combat Aircraft, it would prefer the former.”

“Sintra auto head banging on the wall” 😮

    You are right, of course…

On another note, it´s true that the RAF his tied to the Typhoon order, but… Think of this, the entire 138 F-35B order his for four RAF/RN sqn´s to equip “Joint Force Harrier” AND another two sqn´s for the manned component of the old “FOAS”.
If CFT´s are part of the configuration for the Typhoon Blocks 20/25 “circa” 2018 you can imagine what will happen to those F-35B “FOAS” sqn´s (Delete button).
Scene from “Fauwlty MOD Budget 2009”
“Hey, presto we´ve just slashed 50 of those pesky, noisy, Jumpy Jet´s, that´s 10 Bilion US$”

And if those “Joint Force Harrier” four SQN´s are trimmed to nine fighter´s by unit, you are looking to a 60 to 80 JSF´s British acquisition program…

Richard Beedall has a new piece (dated Oct13) on his website.
Basically he says that it’s either EF2k Tranche 3 or CVF and his air group.

Does it come down to the Saudis buying the U.K.’s Tranche 3, or else CVF will be empty of aircraft? If that’s true, CVF should be cancelled NOW, and three or four Cavours been built instead.

Also more on the 138: FAA seems to assume, that they get an early batch, and a very late, or the last batch? In any case neither the number, nor the assumption of a 25 year production run is realistic.

There could be a lot more said about this all, but basically it comes down to the fact, that the U.K. can’t afford its foreign policy ambitions any more.

Richard B doesn´t mention Typhoon T3 in the entire article… You are confusing your own opinion with that of Richard.

    as the brazilians choice?

    http://www.reuters.com/article/marketsNews/idUSN0150765320081001

why they would stays of the tech transfert that saudies got, if typhoon is cheaper and so “second world best” as fanboys claims over here .?

    “Rant mode ON”

Well, the short and uncomplicated answer his, in Saudi Arabia twenty years ago, there were some greased Arabian hands with British pounds, in Brasil the “Partido dos Trabalhadores” got a very substantial “help” from “French” sources (yes, Dassault) for the first Lula´s Presidential campaign…
The entire FX1 process, with Dassault having a “free hand” by means of Embraer was as rotten has most weapons deal´s in the world (a LOT).

    “Rant mode OFF”

    Cynical? Me?! :diablo:
