    I read a remark….
Three Apples changed the World: –
Adam and Eve’s, Isaac Newton’s and Steve Jobs’s.
Indeed, he set the pace for others to follow and will do for some time. “Never give the customer what he wants – give him what he never expected”.
Luckily, as he had several months warning of the end, he literally emptied his mind of the ideas and plans for Apple’s future products into the Enginners. The next suspected breakthrough is a Telly.

    On a personal note,
I don’t use a Mac as I learned PC in 1981 and have been stuck with it due to laziness. But every mac owner tells me I’d never go back, once tried.
I don’t have an Ipod because I tested Ipod versus Sony for quality and Sony won (By a long way actually).
I don’t own an Iphone (I get a standard phone for free from work) and I don’t see a need for an Ipod in my life.

50 miles at the 70mph is 43 minutes saved. Surely this is a matter of life and death to a sales rep. or some other shiny-ar5e getting to a meeting.
    I think not.

If you are late for an appointment, tough…plan it better next time.
Late for a flight? Tough, plan it better next time.

If it is a genuine emergency you can break the 70, and once proved that it was such (Doctors letter for example) you can avoid any fines or points. In severe cases you can inform the Police that it is an emergency and they will escort or take over the situation.

As one who loves to welly it, with a car that can do it more than most on the road, I still support the 70.

The point about driving offences is that you should obey the law not because you will get caught but because to do otherwise is dangerous. Driving at excessive speeds of up to 190mph (really?) on a public road needs to be punished as it is irresponsible and staggeringly dangerous. Even if you have …..snipped

I don’t think Nashio was admitting to it being a regular occurance. Before using the phone was made illegal I’m sure we all answered and talked on it. I did. Now I’m Blue-dentured into my TomTom, no probs. On short journeys with no Tom Tom, I let it ring away.

As for taking a car out in the middle of the night and giving it some welly, I’ve done that too. Only once or twice in my life. The M58 at Liverpool was so empty after 6pm it was like a Speed Trials strip. Especially for Bikers, Porsche, big BMs and big Mercs.
I imagine they’ve got cameras on it now though.

As I mentioned driving in Germany….

The behaviour you cite is actually as prevalent in the UK as it is in Europe. Been a while since I drove in Germany, Holland and Belgium but from my experiences back then, the rule of the autobahn was you didn’t sit in the fast lane just because it was empty. You cleared it as soon as you’d overtaken. So many were caught out by Herr Kartoffelsalat in his Mercedes doing 130 ‘expecting’ a clear road ahead. Hence the flash to move – you weren’t supposed to be in that lane.
One other thing I noticed was the use of the left indicator whilst in the ‘fast lane’ – you indicated when pulling out of lane one and kept it on the whole time you were overtaking. Not sure if it still happens but seemed like a sensible rule or the road.
Then there is the Eastern European driving habits…

No, the behaviour is far worse over here. Even the biggest willy-head over in UK gives a little space.
I didn’t mention fast lane, I’ve only ever sat in that when I actually was doing 150mph, which is scarily too easy, especially with cruise control on.
The norm is to flash you to move OUT of the inside lane because they want the next exit some hundreds of yards up front.
Most people coming up my rear like that get a full spray from my windscreen washers. And I have 6 washer jets on my bonnet!
Yes, on the motorways the left indicator rule still applies with drivers over about 40 years old.
It is also a polite way of saying they want you to move out of the way so they can pass or overtake….but I can see that in my mirror anyway.
Personally I apply HGV mirror rules on the motorway. Check each mirror, many times a minute. On the HGV test they like you to check about every 5 seconds!

The Beaver….which to my surprise has alot of similarity to my own life.

    I just watched this.
A very surprisingly well made film. It was so good (IMO) I was surprised not to have heard of it until I saw your post.
And, I hope you didn’t get like Mel in the early part of the film!

No I don’t think they are unfair or misguiding, they quite clearly show that roads deaths are an almost insignificant factor in death in the UK. It would be much better to continue working on cancer and heart disease! So another 20 or 30 people will die on the roads, but this will probably be offset by them spending less time inside their cars!

I fully understand the context PPP, but the link I am making is that those 20 or 30 extra “Accidental” deaths are possibly easily more preventable than curing an illness.
Moggy, I support the 70 because having 80 on the outside lane will do two things: –
It WILL make people assume 90 is OK. Presently you can probably get away doing 80 or even 85 on the motorway so long as (a) You are not racing with a mate, (b) You are not driving like a plonka (c) You don’t meet a Police car playing Car Snooker!
But if the law was 80, the Police will enforce it very hard, to prevent the 90 becoming the norm.

Lowering of speed limits at rush hour has actually improved traffic flow on busy motorways. All 3 or 4 lanes doing 55 with very little stop-starts.

As I said, the roads over here are 80 and some people take the mickey on it.

As for the other part of the debate somewhere up the thread….The North European (France, Belgium, Netherlands, parts of Germany) motorway driving habbits are significantly worse than the UK. They will come 2 feet off your Bumper, flash you to move etc. They will even come up to your bumper, then overtake, then take the exit some 500 yards ahead. They move from lane to lane leaving as little gap as possible, mostly with no indicators going. This isn’t boy-racers, this is all….it is their way.

I am a car nut but I support the 70. If law is 80 then norm is 90. Over here the motorways are 130kph (80 in real money) and the ton is very often the norm.
And, the statistics above are unfair and misguiding. Car ACCIDENT deaths can’t be put alongside naturally (Even from smoking) occuring illnesses.
