I was in Gibraltar Tower in the late 70’s when she made her final paying off visit.

Sad to see her exit the harbour with a huge paying off pennant flying from her mainmast.

We ended up with one of her AEW Gannets on our firedump.

Wouldn’t read too much into the rocket/small arms fire theory. Nothing proven yet other than it was a hydraulic failure.

Thats what I’ve heard from my CTC in Bagram:rolleyes: no impact marks on any of airframe

As far as I know the guys were simply listening to civilian ATC chatter.

Which is illegal in India as is the possession of unlicensed scanners….

As is the listening to ATC frequencies in UK but is tolerated here.

If in doubt ask the local authorites on arrival or appropriate Embassy/Consulate before leaving

For what it’s worth, yesterday afternoon it was due in Brazil. To fly in one day from Brazil to Doncaster seems a bit fast. Loading the ‘225 usually takes a long time due to the oversize nature of the typical cargo. Add to that one or two refueling stops, it’s range ain’t great, and it seems to me that the ETA slot is a bit early.

Having said that. It’s been 1700 GMT, no? So, is it there or not?

He was in Brazil but did a tech stop in Sal on the way up with crewrest. It’s possible to do Brazil-UK in one day his range is greater than you think have a look at some of his world records;)

Cargo load is no problems due to the professionalism of the crews and the handling agents!

Santo Domingo is chocked out and is having the same problem as PaP. The border has been closed to only UN and Red Cross shipments only, I do not know how any other agencies are circumventing this problem but it is a bit a rolling goat at the moment.

We had two Il76’s scheduled and cleared into PaP but had to to be diverted to Santo Domingo who also had closed due to too much traffic so aircarft diverted to another Dom Rep airfield and is unloading there.

The port facility in PaP is totally wiped out and there is no time estimate when it be serviceable again.

We are planning to send the 225 on 3 flights to Santo Domingo on behalf of the UN from the UN Logistics Base in Brindisi Italy starting on Monday.

The border between the Dominican Republic and Haiti is closed!!

The only relief traffic being allowed across is either Red Cross or UN sponsored.

Politics rule even in a disaster area:(

Here is a case where specialized military airlifters (C-17, C-5, C-130, An-24s, etc) will show their superiority over airline types (both civil and military operated).

The US Military who are running Port Au Prince have BANNED all large aircraft from the airfield due “taxiway size limitation”

They did initially run a few C5’s through bringing the handling equipment etc

We are hopefully trying to get a couple of IL76’s in at the moment for the Red Cross, but the Antonovs are barred for the time being and I can understand this with chaos there is at the airport. Another problem there is no fuel available at the field so we are being advised to arrive with hold fuel and plenty for our next stop….we intend to use Port au Spain as Santa Domingo next door is extremely busy and empty flights are not allowed
