G-AGHB ex Haydon Ballie was bought by Spencer Flack, and was being ferried to the UK when it ran out of fuel near Munster, Germany and was badly damaged in a off-airfield landing.
I suppose we can’t really blame that on the engine..
Is there any numerous warbird type in the UK with an attrition rate anything like as gloomy as that of the Sea Fury ? I will refrain from adding them up but apart from the Doug Arnold ones which soon left the register in the 70’s , the majority ( nearly all actually) have met misfortune, usually serious, generally linked to engine failure.
I suppose that is a roundabout tribute to the Merlin, far and away the most common warbird engine in the UK, but with a failure rate of a hugely reduced magnitude in comparison to the complex Centaurus.
Perhaps someone will kick off a crowd-funding appeal. There is surely a lot of goodwill out there.
The moderate ‘ heavy landing’ description is appreciated, but this is, by any reckoning, a crash, unfortunately.
Horribly like last year’s accident. Best wishes, of course, to the crew
As a resident of South Bucks, presently about 12 fields north of Chalfont St Peter, I am amazed at the level of filming in this area, it is becoming like a movie theme park.
We have Leavesden ( ex airfield ) now a huge studio, Elstree studios, Pinewood about 10 miles away, filming back to back at Bovingdon airfield ( might as well call it a studio now ) . Marlow is presently a huge Star Wars set. West of London and into the Thames valley is becoming Hollywood for the UK.
The stars no doubt love it because you can be back in your suite at the Dorchester Hotel ( or wherever) by tea time, which would not be the case on location in Norfolk.
.
This huge filming undertaking is filming all over the place, Bledlow Ridge, near Princess Risborough (dressed up as Norfolk) and now a substantial airfield technical site has been built at Chalfont St Peter.

A rather sobering video summary here, speculative, highly provocative but might turn out to be prophetic.
The basic message is ‘warbird operators ( in the US in this discussion) need to shape up pretty quick if they want to avoid major intervention by the FAA.

That is odd. Just tried the link and it works from here. Maybe a browser thing.
Anyway, the picture (link) shows the bashed up- G-MKIV at Duxford, very shortly after its tragic accident at Denham in 1987. The wing is presumably one of the components with no future on a flying airframe, but good enough to re-construct to static display condition.
Interesting post, and it is always encouraging when someone takes the time to put together a comprehensive and thoughtful contribution.
Facebook is certainly out there, and I make some use of it, but with a degree of reluctance, like going into a pub you have never really liked, because otherwise you will be outside , talking to yourself!
I most dislike its transitory nature, a momentary exchange that is instantly overtaken by the next momentary exchange, but nothing really endures.
With this forum, over 18 years or so, we built a huge body of reference material, we covered EVERYTHING, and uncovered and recorded facts and memories that are nowhere else. It was unique, precious and probably can’t be replicated because so many people are no longer alive. I think that is at the core of the anger directed at Key, and the people who effectively trashed the forum. They just did not know what they were doing, due to either ignorance or stupidity. Both are unforgiveable.
But the forum is still here in a least some form of functionality, the content from previous years can sometimes be accessed, depending how you search for it. It IS the best we have at present (for fb resisters ) and can certainly perform a useful function, but of course that depends on enough people troubling to contribute, with content, opinions, photographs and news.
It needs more than a handful of people to do the heavy lifting, it has to be a team effort.
At 11.00 am saw the ferry Reliant chugging overhead Chorleywood, to deliver the pilot I suppose
Hope to see the Fury heading back later.
For me, that link just bounces right back to this forum ( really useless, cheapo, IT on here continues to discourage users) .
Happily, of course Google will bring up the Vintage Aviation Echo in a moment.
Great pictures – Keep ’em coming ! There IS plenty of interest.
Looks amazing, almost a clone of the beloved MH434, which of course was just a few airframes behind on the production line.
Fantastic work from Air Leasing, as always.
Seen on the apron by Shoot Aviation , White Waltham , today.
