Some more pics … These are of the ll-78 tankers … probably the first public pics of the Il-78 in Europe … Vishnu

Not the first time that MIDAS has been in Europe. Ukrainian and Russian operated MIDAS have been in the UK. Earliest examples (Russian) in UK around 1992/1993 for public display.

Oh a Kamov Ka-28 on the hanger of the DDG 168.

Just a HELIX mock-up. Images of the mock-up on 168 can be found at the following link:

The clip with the Jag streaking from left to right below the level of the control tower then powering into a zoom climb and the clip of the Jag streaking across the pan were I believe Andy Cubin seconded to the Omani Air Force , there is also a photo around which shows a Nissan car roof which was creased by a Jag wing tank . I have the mpegs and photos around somewhere .

    Al

Andy Cubin. I remember now! The publication referenced Cubin as the pilot, not Mark Hanna. Thanks for the correction.

The Jags in the two pics are Royal Omani Air Force Jaguar S aircraft.

Presumably the Hunters and Strikemasters in the background are also ROAF aircraft….so it’s probably Thumrait AFB.

    Great shots though 🙂

    Best regards

    Steve Rush ~ Touchdown-News

IIRC, it was RAF seconded pilots in the Omani Jags. Again, IIRC a publication attributed them to Mark Hanna in the cockpit. There are also shot of them going in between hangars.

Did the Iraqi military possess any ARMs at all?

The Coalition came across AS-9s when they occupied Iraqi airbases.

It was weird because it said that the Kh-65 was integrated onto the Su-35 and Su-37.

Are any of these missiles being integrated onto them?

    ‘711’ crashed.

    “RAF A109”

Did the captured A.109s fly in RAF colours? I know that they serve today with the Army Air Corps(Special Forces). I’m sure that I’ve seen an image of one at Yeovilton in 1982 marked up in Royal Marines colours..

“Falkland war booty, there was also a Puma”

The Puma was PA-12 liberated in the Falklands from the Argentine Coast Guard. This helo, after many years serving as a ground instructional(9017M), went through a lengthy rebuild. The ex-PA-12 now serves with the RAF as a Puma HC.1, serial ZE449. It was delivered to the RAF as an HC.1 in 2001.

There was also the Argentine Argentine CH-47C, serial AE-520. Part of this ex-Argentine helo now serves with the RAF. The helo returned to the UK in August 82. It was assigned a UK serial ZH257 and over the years has been in storage or in use as a ground instructional airframe. It was assigned the maintenance serial 9217M. The rear half of this Argentine Chinook was mated with the remains of a damaged RAF example, serial ZA704, and entered service in 2001. The front remains of AE-520 went back into storage.

Yeah, but how do I know how many airfields are in portland?

Apologies. I was trying to tell you the exact airport that the Bear will use.

The source link will take you to a subscription page, so I won’t post it:

The committee’s efforts bring a Moscow friendship exchange and, organizers hope, Russia’s fastest propeller-driven plane to honor Valeri Chkalov

    ALLAN BRETTMAN

VANCOUVER — The Tu-95 Bear, a Russian bomber regarded as the fastest propeller-driven airplane ever, will land next week at Portland International Airport and stay a few days in honor of famed aviator Valeri Chkalov….”

It’s not the first time; but anyway, does anyone know which airfield it’ll be going to?

It is in the article. Portland.

“The TU-95MS is to fly from the Russian Air Force base in Engels to Portland, while the IL-78 from Anadyr airbase to Portland.”

Portland International Airport is home to the Oregon Air National Guard.

I have attached a photograph of this weekends unfortunate Hurricane accident, which was taken from within B-17 ‘Sally B’. I was very fortunate indeed to be allowed a tour of this fabulous aircraft, when I saw the Hurricane heading straight for us!

My personal opinion is that a feat of supreme airmanship prevented an unfortunate accident from becoming something much worse – I only took the picture after the Hurricane had turned away from us and went nose down – no bravery award for me then!!!

Anyway, I don’t know who the Hurricane pilot was, but he should be applauded for his quick, calm and professional response to an extremely difficult situation.

“My personal opinion is that a feat of supreme airmanship prevented an unfortunate accident from becoming something much worse”

I concur with that! I was further along from ‘Sally B,’ behind the fence, and the Hurricane was heading straight for me! I witnessed the whole event as I was captivated by its low pass and break for landing. I stayed by the fence to watch the landing and I would agree that the pilot did his utmost to stop the Hurricane leaving the grass. He seemed very pleased when he jumped onto the port wing after bringing the aircraft to a halt. I do recall a photographer by the tail of the B-17, so that must have been you?! To the right of me there was a woman with at least two small children.

I watched the Hurricane do a fly past then break for landing. There was a slight hop on landing and then the starboard undercarriage partially collapsed. The aircraft then veered off to the right towards the fence-line and straight towards me! As it got closer I was doing the old twostep dance left and right as it staggered in my direction. The pilot was obviously very aware that he was heading towards the fence-line and it appeared that he was using the brakes to tip the nose down to prevent it leaving the grass. Finally the props dug into the grass and the aircraft came to a halt. The pilot was out and on the wing as the first of the Duxford staff arrived to provide assistance. It did get the old heart racing a bit! Just very lucky that nothing was parked up on the grass.

    Because the B-52 isn’t survivable.

And the Bear H isn’t? That is why they have ALCMs in order for them to stand-off if they need to. B-52s were doing all right over downtown Belgrade (1999) and doing low-level airfield airstrikes in Iraq. (1991).

    Hi All,

Sound like it was a great dig, just wondering if Channel 5 is going to make this aviable on Tape, if not would anyone mind making a copy for a Crazy Yank. I would love to watch this program.

Any chance this might make it on to History Un-cover.

    Thanks in advance 😀

No problem. Send me a private message with a postal address and I’ll send a tape to you. The only problem would be the format which you would probably have to convert.
