Does anyone know what the g limits of a Spitfire are??
Here’s the important part. Get the jet to go low and slow and he’s toast!
Low no bother, and anything with a decent FCS will coope with slow. Plus the jet will have the added bonus that it can gain energy much more quickly than a Spit could!
Harrier XW175
Currently the oldest flying Harrier (unless any of the Thai AV-8As are older), still flying as the VAAC at Boscombe…
Daz,
Quite possibly true, but I though we were talking about modern jets, not one that is 50 years old! Something like an F-18 has a slightly more sophisticated FCS than a Lightning!
They actually went up and dog fight each other and because of the speed differance the CAF guys would win or come out even. A large Fighter like the 14 or 18 can’t maintane the tight turn of the Prop planes because they just fall-off.
Hmm. I can’t believe that the prop aircraft would stand much of a chance of actually winning against a modern jet, but I could believe that the jet may find it hard to get a kill shot in, as the prop job could fly that much slower for a given alpha. However, the jet will be able to sustain a much higher AoA and also sustain a much higher g level (we’re talking 9G for an F-15 without CFTs). the jet would also have to use its speed advanatage to get in a good killing position.
EN830, you are right, an aircraft like a Mirage 2000 formating on a Spit would have lots of alpha on and the lateral and directional control is likely to be reduced. There is a good pic of the BBMF formed up with 2 Tornado F3s which shows the AoA difference to good effect. Don’t forget though, that this is formation flying and we are talking about combat here. Very different ball game.

If it was “real-life” then surely the F-14 would engage the two “targets” from 100km away and sidewinder them into oblivion !!??
Not from 100km away!! AIM-9s are short range missiles!! But, in principle, yes, modern combat tactics ditate that if you’ve got into a full-on turning fight, you’ve made a bit of a mistake… So shot from a long way way if poss…
The idea of a ‘display team’ display team consisting of WV318 (Black Arrows), XL577 (Blue Diamonds), G-MOUR (Yellowjacks) and G-RORI (repainted into Dead Sparrows colours) has been talked about more than once!!
I spent the day on South Dispersal, and I have to say that bar a couple of highlights which were the Sea Fury and Sea Hawk, first time I’ve seen that fly since it went to Dunsfold) and the Harrier 4 ship (possibly the last time you will see a massed Sea Harrier flyby), the rest of the display was pretty tame. Yes, the weather didn’t help, that was why Miss Demeanour didn’t display, but then Jonathon was refused a revised slot. Apparently there was no room in the display for him during the afternoon show, which given the amount of gaps in the flypro was a bit poor. Also, why did a number of the aircraft taking off start from the intersection, rather than right in front of most of the crowd??
So, all in all I was glad I didn’t have to pay to get in. I may have been a bit miffed if I had!
The Blue Diamonds scheme will go well with Black Arrows painted T7A,’318. That will make a nice pairing!
One of the Mustangs that was at RIAT this year (bit of a brainfade, can’t remember which one) was in bare metal, not polished with suitable stains, weathering on the exhausts, etc. I was lead to believe that this scheme was as authentic as they guys could make it! (obviously no cordite stains though!)
PS, if you want authentic jet warbird schemes, WV372 wears pukka 2 Sqn markings (hi-gloss), and WV318 is in (to the best of my knowledge) authentic 111 Sqn Black Arrows markings.
Have you tried the guys at Thunder City? Seeing as how they have 3 airworthy beasts, they may have some non fligthworthy parts for the seats…
Buccsoc,
Are you sure you mean Anti g straps? Do you not mean Negative G straps?
Miss Demeanour will be returning to Kemble sometime on Sunday afternoon, after Jonathon has displayed at Southport, so there may be possiblity of a flyby or two. Don’t know of anything else happening, though!
Hadn’t realised carrying bombs makes a jet sound louder…!
‘Course it does! More bombs means more weight, therefore more power needed to hover! Which all adds up to more noise!
“Nor does a Harrier sound as impressive as the Victor at max power………..”
Would have to disagree – Harrier GR7A (the big engined one) hovering with tanks and 2 1000lb LGBS sounds the terrier’s!!
