Cheers for the update Jon. Good luck to Barry and well done for taking on the project.
Now if only I could find my pics of the B-25 Laiden Maiden/Gorgeous George Ann that used to be parked by the fence at Coventry Airport many moons ago. I think that would have qualified.
Ok no more B-25 questions from me now. :p
I recall paintballing at Lasham. The company claimed to have walked a helicopter airframe from the museum to the wood without anyone noticing and subsequently no one had at that time objected.
Bruce,
re Blue Robins qoute above. If a helicopter can be walked in to the museum without any one noticing or even objecting. Is there anychance we can walk the Drover for your place in a similar vein? 😉
Last time i seen them at Kemble, they was both still in military marks
as was worn in RAF service 2006. so i would say there is no need for change and if so what markings would they need to be in.?
I think what is being said is that they would revert back to been operated with a military serial rather than a UK Civil registration.
I would hate to offend the resident Mitchell nuts (being one myself! ) so as a gesture of solidarity offer up another.
Ex Southend, ex North Weald, now Booker, and awaiting the attentions of a Quik Fit Fitter.
Also at the risk of been told of for talking Mitchells. Whats happening with Bed Sheet Bomber. is she still with Barry? Is she for sale or is she been restored?
I have a Flypast Magazine from about the time of Peice of Cake and she is pictured next to Dolly the then other Aces High Mitchell at North Weald. She looked ok back then. Shame to see whats happened to her.
Could Moggy have just read the same NOTAM I have in my possesion at the minute?
Detailing test flights between Aug 20-24. Aug 28-31 & Sept 03-07. All between 0900-15.00 😉
Unsure of any differences to G-ACSS.
But according to the ref’s I have Boomerang only wore that name, in fact I cant find any mention of the name Firbeck. Maybe not surprising when you consider that she only had an active life of two months and approx 60 flying hours.
The name Boomerang was chosen in the hope that the aircraft would always come back.
Or has someone infiltrated our happy go lucky forum?
Very funny I should mention a B-25 and it gets changed.
FAO the watching seller from ebay.Though the CAF Mitchell did have the same nose art (Albeit better executed) the camo was a diff colour buddy. 😀
Doesnt look correct to me Dave
There was a B-25 Mitchell in the CAF that had the nose art Yellow Rose. Identical font and identical lady. If I had a scanner I would show you the picture.
Beat me to it John.
The first thought I had was…………..Is thats where the Classic Flight is going?
I’ve heard Newquay mentioned before as a new home for the flight. But then again Ive heard 101 other possibles as well over the years.
Well done once again Ben and co.
Have always had a soft spot for the Chippie. Was the first aircraft type I ever flew in, and the first of many I threw up in as well. 😉
Take no notice to those mocking you. I bet when no ones around they also sit in the aircraft pretending to be flying and shooting down the enemy.
Only difference is you were daft enough to get caught. :p
I think Bex makes an interesting observation one which I thought about albeit from a slightly diff angle relatively recently.
Presently we have a good airshow scene that supports a number of aircraft types.
At some point in the future though there will be a period of aircraft that will not be represented as flyers because they are either to expensive or too complex to maintain and operate. Or indeed a combination of those two factors. My own opinion is that unless a company like HHA operates Tonkas and the likes on a contract I cant see the types ever operating under civil ownership.
So what will that leave us with? Shuttleworth with its string and fabric types, Duxford with a plethora of Spitfires, a few early jets such as a Canberra (type chosen just so you don’t get too down hearted Bex) and eventually some UAV’s to watch.
But lets be honest the RAF does a lot more to preserve its history than many other air forces around the world. Ok we can all say they could improve and fly this or that but we have the BBMF and two RAF museums (which do place a large number of aircraft on loan to other organisations). In recent years we also had the Vulcan and the Vintage Pair which in my opinion isn’t bad going.
Remember the RAF is first and foremost a fighting/peace keeping (or whatever in term the Government wish’s to use) organisation.
Ok here’s my ten. Some obscure and some not so…………
Speed Spitfire in her original form
Float Plane Spitfire (good choice LL)
Avro Manchester
De Havilland Hornet (as a flyer)
Curtiss Wright P-60 (thats a P-40 with a double wasp radial)
AW Whitley (well I have to seein as they were made in my home town)
Short Stirling
Bristol Brabazon
Shorts Mayo & Mercury
If I could have 11 it would be a toss up between a HP.42 or an XP.47
I had a walk around her yesterday and she is looking in fine fettle.
The wash down and T-cut of the airframe Malc and Gordie undertook during the week has done wonders for an already immaculate airframe.
Id never seen her with her cowl panels of before and was amazed at what good nick she is in around that area. Helped by some hard graft and attention to detail. Seems a shame to pop them back on the airframe hiding everything once more.
I had a good wander around the Beaver yesterday Les and she really is looking lovely.
The Phantom is getting there slowly. Like Les says Im incredibly dedicated to my full time job  so unfortunately I can only work on her at weekends but she is getting there.
Luckily I’ve had occasional help from a couple of other museum members to get her where she is now, Mark, Andrew, Dan & Rob at some point have all had a roller or a bit of wet n dry thrust into their hands. Mention must also go to Lester who is presently doing some skin work to repair some nasty damage inflicted upon the airframe during her BDR days.
Yes she is staying in the Mig Killer colour scheme John, she had to really as historically its the most interesting part of her carear. Hopefully we can get it a little more accurate this time round and include a few details inc badges that weren’t applied to her last time she was painted.
Regards Martin
You would def need to tidy up those drag inducing underwing rad units.
And while your at it replace the wing with something like a laminar-flow wing to get a higher speed. Dare I say with a wing similar to that seen on the Spiteful? 😀
