Looking at the excellent SAM Publications book on the Hurricane the following information is confirmed in a number of chapters of the book. Namely the 3 view drawings at the rear of the book but also in an understanding the subject section which is effectively a three dimensional drawing of each variant and the differances highlighted by text located around the drawing

The IIb & IId had the irregular hexagonal access panels to the guns
IIc, IIe, IV & V features rectangular access panels.

    Hope this helps.

    Damien B,

Tut tut tut what do you mean “any notion of a collection policy raises a smile”.

They have a collecting policy that is to preserve and display carrier aircraft. Its obvious to all isnt it? After all they even acquired the most famous carrier aircraft of all time recently. Concorde.

Cheers TT. Not as nice looking as the HArvard/AT6/Texan (or whichever name you want to call it) but still a pretty looking thing.

What great pics. Didnt even know one of the type existed let alone was been restored in this country. Really has missed my radar.

Anybody know who has restored it, who owns it? and is it staying in this country?

    Thanks for sharing Consul

I maybe wrong but I believe it is. I think an opposition magazine did a feature on the museum last month and in the article it stated that the museum felt the aircraft didnt fit in with their collection and would be willing to let it go if I meant the aircraft could be preserved better. In the statement used, it said something along the lines of the salty air wasnt aiding preservation of the airframe.

Always seemed a strange aircraft to let out of the country in my opinion. Pretty rare beast.

Very much so Pete. the Fleet Air Arm needed an urgent stop gap AEW aircraft before a British designed and built aircraft could step into the breech.

The Skyraider filled that need. Some were new build examples others were second hand from the US military. Interestingly afte rthey were retired from Fleet Air Arm service many become Target Tugs in Sweden painted in a rather bright overall yellow colour scheme.

Lookin at the MAM VAmpire F1 on sat and what ever was done to her in the 70’s certainly helped. Shes in really good condition. Especially when you consider she was outside as a Gate Guardian for a number of years.

Cheers for answering that Bruce. I guess in some ways modern timber preservatives will help?, but and the big but is that it is a wooden pod and by its very nature wood is labour intensive to care for and troublesome in poor weather.

Is it feasible to keep a vampire outdoors providing it is lavished with regular attention? Wellesbournes doesnt seem to hold up to bad although it does have a structure akin to a garage porch over it. And is it true that the wooden structure consits of not only ply but also balsa?

Lets hope that the olive drab they use this time is something a little more realistic in colour this time. The pure green she has worn in recent years has spoilt her looks.

Shame a new colour scheme couldnt have been chosen. But….. at least she is still flyin and thats the main point.

Im at work now so cant confirm the book I extracted the info from but it is a very well regarded book on the history of the BBMF. Its a great read and if anyone is interested let me know and I can put the title and author on the thread later.

In years gone by the Lancaster went through major services more reg than it does now. Thats why the colour scheme changes have slowed down somewhat in recent years.

I thought PM-M2 was worn for longer than one season. I may be wrong as im more a Spitfire fan. But I will be honest and say that Ive never seen her wear or seen pics of her with DR-M codes on. Love to see the pic CDP206.

Its the great thing about this forum theres always someone with new information even if it does prove you wrong.

Unfort im stuck in rugby working while my buddy the original poster RobMAc will be stood waiting to seeher come in. NOT FAIR.

PA474 collour schemes and dates ave been as follows

KM-B applied in 1965 and worn until 1979. The codes were modified to KM-F briefly in march 1976 as the aircraft was used in filming a french film called Lieutenant Karl

AJ-G repaineted at the end of the 1979 display season

SR-D repainted at the end of its major service at kemble 1983-84

PM-M2 repainted in time for the 1988 display season

WS-J repainted over the winter of 1993-94

and then of course the there is the present scheme which is shortly to be removed
