    so what would the british forces do in the following hypothetical situation?

    there is intelligence on possible attack. it may come within hours, surely within 24 hours – there is no time for additional assets to be brought to the theatre. Those three radars and four typhoons are everything the islands have. (plus rapier unit radars but im imagening theyre worthless in early warning scenario)

    keeping two planes in the air may be possible but would two planes be enough? single plane in the air is surely possible to organize over a 24 hours period, but a single plane cant really be enough, as it cant cover all the approaches, even if its radar could detect targets 300 km away.

    then we have the option of having planes sitting on the runway, engines on, prepped and ready, being topped up with fuel while engines on. This seems like the best bet.

    is there another option ive missed?

    Fedaykin, are you suggesting that none of the four typhoons on falklands would be prepped for quick take off and interception? Armed, fueled, with crews sitting nearby? what sort of reaction time is expected for a qra unit?

    the three radars on various peaks on falklands should give a warning against a 10 meter above water target some 100 or so km away. so 6-7 minutes is not enough? Pilots should be sitting in the planes with engines on to be able to intercept? Which, im guessing, would not be done unless there was some intelligence info suggesting there is already a threat underway?

    since this discussion has already went wildly offtopic, i might as well reply here to comments made in the argentinian air force topic, so we dont further pollute that thread.

    it was suggested that six kc390s serving with AAF would be much of a concern for UK interests over falklands. While such an addition would certainly add quite a bit of flexibility, if we are concerned only with the issue of potential falklands conflict, the same effect, if not greater, could be achieved with reorganizing bases of AAF and marine aviation. making some civil airports dual use, putting AAF planes there plus conctructing a new air base in the south, close to falklands, would be quite more dangerous to UK. As for the matter of cost – if UK plans to build an airport on st. helen for some 200+ million pounds then the argentinians could build a base for less. even with conversion of two more civil airports to make them dual use and station some AAF planes there were still talking about perhaps 300 million pounds – not a lot of money compared to what is gained. kc390s can brake down or be destroyed. Additional air bases close to falklands can, with decent repair crews, be put out of function for 24 hours per strike package.

    is that something that has officially been talked about? or is it just an assumption?

    Would the UK veto that move, now when UK and France seem to be rather chummy?

    Finally, if the argentinians are really that far along with their domestic laser bombs – how useful would be a rather old similar system from second hand SEs? Of course, the rest of the parts, just for maintaining the fleet would be quite welcome…

    of course it can but there are many situations where either putting regular troops on the front line or infiltrator squads in enemy territory are not a possibility. in todays age, not having self sufficent capability of seeking out and lasing targets seems like a huge defficiency for a warplane.

    I must say the comment about dardo family totally surprised me. So far I’ve managed to find info on the glide bomb and the cruise missile versions (and even that was pretty hard to find) but i had no idea about laser guidance part of the family. Do you happen to have some links or references to publications that shed some more light on the matter?

    If one is using laser guided weapons, I would assume one needs a decent targeting pod with at least 10 km range plus a laser designation pod. Those two have been developed domestically in argentina? Or have some outside companies colaborated on their development? Have all the planes we’ve mentioned so far been integrated with those pods? Once more, is there some link or publication talking about the targeting pods and/or laser designation pods?

    What do you mean when you say “dardo has terminal guidance as well”? Do you mean it has additional mode of terminal guidance as well as GPS guidance? If so, what kind?

    Will Pucaras and/or Pampas be integrated with carrying dardo bombs?

    Does dardo use gps signal exclusively or does it also use Glonass signal?

    I apologize if i am boring, but the recconeissance bit is also very important to me – is there any info on current recce capability of argentinian air force?

    Also, Ive been looking into various sources on total inventory of AAF and now i am inclined to think that AAF has managed to cobble up enough of mirages III, mirages V, daggers, fingers (whatever theyre called now) for a full squadron of 24 units. Is that correct?

    Lastly, are there any news about new Pampa production? How far along is that project? Is there a publicly announced timetable for the whole project? How many will be produced by, say, 2014?

    I have got two questions concering the small missiles for s300/s400 system.

    1. Which armed service in what country has so far bought 9M96 missiles and integrated them with the s300/s400 system?

    2. More importantly, is there an image of the said missiles being used in an active unit within any armed service of any country? If so, could one please link such an image (or two) ? (please dont link images of show models, testing models etc, i need proper active unit images, if available)

    How many planes does a combat squadron in russian air force have?

    Is there a source that confirms how many planes russians use in their squadrons?

    How many planes per fighter sqadron? How many per attack plane squadron? Per recce squadron? And how many bombers in bomber squadrons?

    I see 16 as a figure that seems likely, but i’ve no idea if it’s true, nor if it is applicable across the board, for all kinds of squadrons and planes.

    Can anyone help with a proper source solving this little mystery?

    if the amount of oil is the main problem for long flights, would it be safe to assume that oil is spent faster if the engines are working harder? so, even if typhoons are to, say, supercruise helped by refuelling tankers, the oil would still be spent within 10 or so hours?

    Why is that less than some other fighters around? If one googles around, it is possible to find examples of a f16 doing a 11 hour mission and f15 doing a 15 hour mission.

    Would it be at all doable for a typhoon to take off from ascension, fly at whatever profile it needs to fly to conserve oil, fly over port stanley at falklands then return and land in ascension? Naturally, one would need a bunch of tankers to pull that off, but would it be theoretically possible?

    Ive got several new questions concering AAF.

    1.) Historic question. Why didnt the AAF use the A-4 skyhawks from the port stanley airport during the falklands war? Its runway of 4500 feet was more than enough for decent air operations with the said type. Was the reason political? Was it logistical? Or was it out of fear that those planes would be lost due to bombing runs or other attacks?

    2.) What sort of recce pods does the AAF operate today? Do they have any sort of recce resources which would enable the pilot/copilot to review the footage and direct the plane more precisely AND send the footage via datalinks to the third party (not necesarily in real time, but at least sending the photographs in digital form in matter of seconds?)

    3.) how far along is dardo II development? Ive seen some footage from second half of last year where it was shown tested on A4, Mirage III and even twin bombs on super etendards, as well as test footage of it being dropped out of a flying plane.

    3b.) Is dardo II made purely out of off the shelf consumer grade electronics? How resiliant is its GPS guidance? Would it be safe to assume it does not use directional nullers like JDAMs to make it more resilient to jamming?

    is it possible they are talking about active squadrons of usaf itself, when they mention 54 squadrons? And that would not include the planes in use with USAF reserve and ANG. On the other hand, total of 1700+ f35 was always planned to be spread over all the usaf/reserve/ang services.
