Well for me , best car chase was from the Film ” IT’S A MAD MAD MAD MAD WORLD, because the whole film was taken up by it. Putting that aside it was a very funny film, and the scenary on the highways was just superb. A great American film in a wonderful era.

Right then, assuming Global warming is irreversable, this is how I would address the situation if I were in Government( fat chance of that).
Instead of wasting money on silly military adventures around the world, I would put money into minimising the damage from Global warming .
    1. Build flood defences around all Rivers near Homes.
    2. Stop over development in Towns, and make unused Brownfield sites into Parkland.
    3. Build coastal defences against rising Sea levels.
    4. Build defences to prevent London being flooded .
    5. Further building of new Towns not to be in the South East., there’s plenty of space up North.
    6. Put a programme in place to reduce the Population, slow down the incomers and speed up the outgoers, OAP’s off to Spain and elsewhere.
    7. Create a Stormwatch disaster recovery organisation.
    8. Create new Forests.

The point is that flooding is our biggest problem from Global Warming. In our Towns flooding will be a big problem due too all the Concrete , there is knowhere for the Rain Water to go now, apart from into the Sewers which can’t cope. Torrential downpours will happen more often. If we continue too build Home Extensions and concrete over our front Gardens the problem will get worse. Measures too prevent Global warming won’t work, the Horse has already bolted, we have crossed the RUBICON.

    Farnboro F15 EAGLE

Another memorable Airshow was Farnboro back in the late 70’s, when a mate of mine invited me to go along with him, too see the first F15 flying display in G.B.
At the time it was quite something too see a new USAF plane at Farnboro . We certainly were impressed by its performance.

Mildenhall back in the 80’s, and another memorable F15. During the afternoon the commentator explained that an F15 was due too land, having just flown non stop across the Atlantic, from the U.S.A. Sure enough it came in too land, what was also interesting was it’s colour scheme, which was Olive Green. Large fuel tanks were positioned under each wing.

Finally the West Coast Demonstration team put on a memorable display at Fairford one year with 2 F15’s.

I have certainly enjoyed those memorable Airshows. 🙂

    Fire from the SKY

Now this film really put the frighteners up me when I first saw it . It’s taken from a true story, regarding the Abduction by Aliens of a Lumberjack in America. Some of the scenes in this film are sureal and disgusting too look at. No other film that I have seen re this subject material can match it. If it really happened the way it was shown, it shows an intelligent being’s disregard, for lower forms of life.

I don’t suppose the pilot or his family thought it was “a classic” or even slightly humourous as it was fatal.

Sorry about my comments on this one ,as I missread the text . I missed the fact that the situation proved fatal for the Pilot, I assumed he managed to get out before the seat went up. Just proves I need to make sure I read things properly before I make comments. Appologies on that one.

Anyhow, assuming Global Warming could be stopped, this is how I would go about it if I was in Government.

    1. Make it law that the central heating musn’t go above 22c.
    2. Make it an offence to have a porch light, how many of those lights do you see wasting Electricity.
    3. Same with those Security Lights that everyone seems to have on all night.
    4. Switch off every other streetlight.
    5. Get rid of all those rediculous traffic lights that can be replaced with roundabouts.
    6. Make it illegal to use Gas stoves for cooking, only microwaves allowed.
    7. In Winter make people were jumpers indoors , and go out for Two 2 mile walks per day, you will become more healthy and won’t feel the cold so much. Also include half hour of weightlifting exercises, every 2 or 3 days.
    8. Max Motorway speed 60 m.p.h.
    9. Get rid of Traffic Jams.
    10. Only one Car per Household.
11.Build more nuclear Power Stations .
    12. Make it Law that people must find jobs nearer too where they live, no more of this commuting business.
    13. All cars must be Electric within 2 Years.

Well I guess some of the above might work with a bit of imagination. Your standard of living may fall, but its all in a good cause.

It’s a convenient political tool and provides a good reason-or excuse- to charge us all more for energy .

Exactly spot on Der, Big Brother is watching every move you make, and will find any excuse and way to sqeeze as much money out of you ,as they possibly can . After all the money in the kitty is being used up at an enormous rate. We don’t have a large export market anymore, so that money has to be found elsewhere. Makes you want to sell up, and leave the country, dosn’t it.

Ok then, Farnboro back in the 80’s. They had a Ski jump installed on the Airfield too demonstrate the Harrier’s launch from a Warship e.g. HMS Arkroyal. Not only that though, approx 4 or it may have been that magic 5 Harriers did a mass Hover over the Runway, and I can assure you it was very very noisy, in fact I had too cover my Ears, and thats unusual for me. That was the only occasion I have seen so many Harriers flying together, best Harrier demo I have ever seen. Also notable at the time was another Farnboro when an F18 Hornet had a flame out as he left the runway. The commentator did say that the Hornet had problems and would have too land, which he did. On the following Monday I heard on the T.V. news that a Hornet leaving Farnboro had crashed into a field, fortunately the Pilot ejected. memorable and exciting times back in the 80’s.
At Mildenhall I have seen a Tornado blow out a Tyre, doing one of those short landings.
Another interesting one was when an F111 at Lakenheath I think, did a fast flypast with wings swept fully back, but as it approached it started to climb gradually and seemed to be flying slightly away from us. This gave the most peculiar impression that the F111 appeared to be shrinking in size. Now I will never forget that, because it was so unusual.

The HARRIER was a great British development, brilliant idea, at a wonderfull time in our history. Those certainly were our glory days………..

I’m old enough (just) to remember talk of global cooling. A 70’s theory, it proposed that an elongated “nuclear winter” would take place due to increased pollution esp particulates and dust in the Earths upper atmosphere dimming the sun.

There is a precadent to this. When the island of volcanic Krakatoa (correct spelling?) in Indonesia (formerly the East Indies) blew itself apart, not only was it the loudest explosion ever heard at the time, perhaps ever, it also threw so much ash and dirt into the upper atmosphere, dimming the sun as far afield as W.Europe. Temperatures were reduced, crop yields fell and I think there was a fear of mass starvation.

Of course, prediction models and theories can change over time and techlology is better today than 30 years ago. The biq questions are, is global warming happening. If it is, is it man made? If man made, what pecentage is man made? One recent theory I’ve heard is increased solar (sunspot) activity for example.

Sunspot activity at present is at a very low natural cycle, in about 11 years it will reach its max. you can see the Sunspots on the SOHO website, and also the spaceweather website. Anyhow I can see that there is some interesting points made by you guys out there. So it seems Global warming, be it man made or natural, is impossible to stop, but we might be able to slow it down. Over these last 40 years our economy in G.B. has changed. We used to have factories which produced goods for export. Now we have a service industry, Takaway food industry and of course the shops. these industries are heavily dependent on Transport, Gas and Electricity. Yes , I am adding to Global warming by driving, using Gas and Electricity. Now, its not my fault that I am doing this, its the way we do things. I OBJECT to being expected to pay for the damage I am doing to the Planet. Perhaps if we had less population in G.B. instead of inviting half the world to settle here I might feel a little happier. Then less Fuel, Gas, Electricity and Water would be used, a far more sensible approach than penalising Joe public. Oh and don’t forget that Water is in short supply, it goes on and on and on. Put simply, I can see big problems ahead, because our leaders have failed us. The situation is out of control.

    concorde

Now that Concorde is no longer with us, here follows some memorable moments when I saw Concorde.

    1. In the good old Farnborough Airshow days, Concorde would nearly always put in an appearence and the Crowd loved it.

    2. Mildenhall back in the 80’s I saw Concorde do a touch and go , which was the first time I saw Concorde at Mildenhall. Absolutely mind blowing , I was standing real close to the Runway as it flew past. :diablo: 😀

    3. My job used to be servicing TV’s in Hotels. On one occasion as I was working in a Hotel room next to the main runway at heathrow. I heard an approaching plane,I quickly made my way to the window. Looking out onto a snow covered ground, I could see Concorde flying real low just above the runway with its Reheat glowing on the Snow. Wow, that was a fantastic sight as it went past the window. :diablo: 😀

    4. As the last days of Concorde’s career approached I was lucky enough to see it fly across the M25 , real low during the evening Rushhour. It was dark and I had a fab view of its reheat( shortish wispy Blue Reheat). Now whats unique about this experience is that I could see two modes of Transport simultaneously, Concorde and the M25 Traffic. Just as well I didn’t crash the Van , with all the excitement. :diablo:

    5. Whenever Concorde would leave Heathrow, the noise was mind blowing with that Reheat, truly miss that experience.

Ok so its not Military, however Concorde was in a class of its own. AAAAAAhhhh memories are made of this. 😀 🙂

Finally The Red Arrows were great to watch as they flew low across roads at the Farnborough Airshow, heading towards the crowd. Bet they don’t do that anymore.

    Happy days of old.
