With current orders for 30+ refuelling kits for A400M from France, Germany & Spain, & suggestions that the EDA could buy another ten or so for pooled use, I don’t think there’s going to be any shortage of A400M AAR kits. What worries me is the small number of bigger tankers. We could end up with 14 RAF (5 of them part-time) & 12 AdlA A330, 4 AMI KC-767, 4 Luftwaffe A310, & 2 Dutch KDC-10. Spain’s 707s won’t last forever, & plans to replace them with A330 MRTT have been shelved due to the state of the Spanish economy.

Turkey will doubtless want to replace its KC-135s one day, but Turkey is not always fully engaged.

I share your concern about the larger tanker fleet but 25 additional A400m’s with 20 sets of AAR kits able to conducted airlift and AAR could make a big difference in times of need

I think if Europe wants more airlift and tanker capability then they should look at a European raped multi-mission air wing base around 25 A400M’s

How it would work Europe as a hole buy 25 A400m’s they also buy 20 sets of pallet-mounted refuelling systems- wing mounted 908E systems and 40 cargo bay fuel tanks

The air wing is staffed by crews from European and allied air forces

Tasking to include -Disaster relief – Medi-vac support – Air lift support – Air refuelling support

It takes 3 hours to turn an A400m round from airlift to tanker

With future European air forces operating A400m in numbers I don’t see the need to add another type as crews can come from A400m units to do tours on the wing which in the end will work out cheaper and help inter-service operations

Well they start in a good place so moving forward I would start with ordering

18 An-32’s of which 4 would be MP’s to give a light/medium tactical transport capability
    Start replacement of the 60 Mil-24’s with 40 TAI/AW T129 helicopter
Start replacement of the L39’s with 25 Yak-130’s in the LIFT/ A2G role
Replacement of SU-25’s with 50 JF-17’s In the A2G/A2A role
Replacement of Mig-29’s with 30 Mig-35’s in the A2A/A2G role
Reduce the Mil-17 fleet to 80
    Order 10 Mil-26’s

Again as said in my posts 105 and 127 on this thread I do agree they need some new thinking to take place

Given what fighter types are in region and how the region is at this time I think they should buy 40 Gripen E/F’s and as part of the deal sign up with SAAB for a 120 unit 5th gen project that is carrier capable to enter service in 2025-30 with a understanding its a 50/50 partner deal

For me both JF-17 and FA-50 make for very good force multipliers as in if you are looking for a combat jet force of 50+ jets having 30+ of these will keep the cost down and give you a Jet that can carry out air policing work plus A2G and point defence as needed but I feel you would need a second more powerful type something like SU-35 JF-17 mix or a Typhoon FGR4 FA-50 mix depending on your views

    I was thinking of FA-50 as a A-4 replacement post 2020

agreed and I feel FA-50 could work as a replacement for the Fightinghawks with 20 jets costing round 600 million dollars

Filipinos worked out they couldn’t afford an actual multi-role fighter so opted for a Lead In Fighter Trainer to try to rebuild fighter capability (F-5s were retired nearly 10 years ago without replacement).

I had read their choice was T/A-50, not F/A-50 but I could be wrong.

Also no firm order yet and given the nature of Filipino defence modernisation plans since 1995 (i.e. they just stay plans), I wouldn’t be surprised if they were never ordered.

Just because a capability was lost 10 years ago dose not mean it can not be replaced FA-50 is the way to go now as it gives a BVR fighter capability as well as the A2G one report I read was they are looking for a Mid range A2A capability

another way for the FAA to go may be FA-50 as said on the other thread it has descent speed to make intercept’s is BVR and has a A2G capability and is of Western line’s plus cheap

Currently what they are looking for is a multi-role fighter type to replace the F-5’s to this end FA-50 works it has descent speed at Mark 1.5 is BVR capable with AIM-120 and has a A2G capability and with a cost of around 400 million for the 12 jets not a bad price

Brazil needs to concentrate on what it needs more than what is on the market at this time it is upgrading its

    AMX’s
    A-4’s
    F-5’s

And may or may not do something with its M2000’s. This gives them 15 years to develop a aircraft of their own with help from the likes of SAAB so what do they need ?

Looking at what they have now what they need is 120 to 160 4.5 gen single engine multi-role fighters capable of Mach 1.6-1.8 that can operate from their carrier and costs 25-35 million dollars per unit I think with help from the likes of SAAB Brazil could carry out this program as long as they sick to building a new airframe fitting existing parts i,e vixen radar and a imported engine

I agree but airframe hours are important in this case the more hours they have the more time they have but an upgrade would cost
