Fairey IIID ‘D’ being recovered on slipway.
Fairey IIID ‘D’ S1825, probably same aircraft as above on beach with winch cable attached.
Here are the next two photos.
Fairey IIID 9734 beached adjacent to the slipway. Note the long gone Lee Pier in the background.
Fairey IIIF ‘A’ (I can’t read the serial) at foot of slipway. The little boy in the foreground could have been me 30 or so years later.

I’d love to see more, I grew up in Fareham, and remember HMS Daedalus as it was then in the 60s and 70s being the base for Sea Devons and Herons. The Sea Tiger G-AIVW(?) regularly operated from the slipway in the 60s, I was too young to have a camera then, any shots of that?”
We’re probably of similar ages. I started spotting in 1965 and the first civil reg. that I logged was G-ANFM the red and silver Tiger Moth glider tug of the Naval Gliding Club at Lee. As you say, Sea Devons and Herons were based at Lee together with a couple of Sea Princes. The College Of Air Training at Hamble used Lee for circuits by day and night. Firstly with Chipmunks and Apaches and then with Cherokees and Barons after re-equipment. The Southampton University Air Squadron was based at Lee with Chipmunks and later Bulldogs.
In recent years I have been pleased to see G-ANFM at fly-Ins at Popham, now in a yellow/silver scheme. She seems to have aged better than me!
The “proper” name for the place has always been Lee-On-The-Solent. I have known the area all my life and locals tend to say Lee-On-Solent or just Lee. I assume that the official name for the station would have reflected the full name of the place, but I have evidence for that to hand.
Thanks for that very detailed information.
A Swordfish (not sure which one) was back at Lee to-day for the D-Day 80 event as part of of the Navy Wings trio with the Harvard and Reliant.
Was that a dark coloured Islander? I Saw G-WPNS leave Lee mid-morning to-day enroute to Cumbernauld.
Thanks for all that Baz.
I had thought, wrongly it seems, that K3846 may have been some sort of trials aircraft. Possibly involved with torpedo drop testing at the nearby torpedo range at Stokes Bay.
Do you have anymore information? I’ve not been able to find any references to a trainer version or any other pictures.
G-HHII the 2 seat Hurricane flew over the house headed towards the Isle Of Wight about 40 mins ago.
The Albatross was at Lee again to-day. Sounds great.
Dornier Do17 looks like a good candidate. Cockpit side window. Does it have any numbers stamped on the frame?
1958 Aerocommander 500 had an U/C mishap at Lee on Wednesday.
I hope that those pretty yellow straps are up to the job of restraining that beast of an engine in heavy seas.
Spitfires G-ILDA and G-TCHI just flew together into Lee from Goodwood.
Grumman Albatross N98TP visited Lee again this morning, presumably to refuel.
I posted pics from its previous visit in the Spotted 2023 thread.
