When the civil service are subject military law, get sent off to do their job in some far flung corner of the planet, where the greatest ambition of a fair sized chunk of the population is to kill or maim you, and all at a moments notice; when civil servants can be expected to substitute for striking fire-fighters, etc. etc. then just maybe they could expect to be paid the same as the service men and women that you are winging about.
By the way it’s called the X factor and is supposed to compensate for the all of the above, plus a lot more which I don’t have room to mention. It’s not nearly enough.
If you want the extra 5K that much you could always join up.
To take away the security of housing after 8 years or so is the final insult.

Flying Officer is the RAF commissioned officer rank equivalent to the army rank of 1st Lieutenant. It has nothing to do with being aircrew.

Try either the RAF museum or the Imperial war museum, they may be able to assist or at least point you in the right direction for more information. Failing that try the National Archives at Kew.

Leadership – the one thing that no-one seems to have mentioned.

I don’t think that anybody expects the captain to go down with the ship, but in these sort of situations surely the captain must set an example, and be seen to to be in control of the situation. The captain departing the ship, for whatever reason, before all the passengers and crew have been evacuated must inevitably be seen as “I’m all right Jack” and the signal that it’s every man for himself.
