in terms of non-standard serial presentation, don’t forget that on some of the early Vampire F1 airframes, De H added an oblique stroke between the two letters and the three numbers of the serial number – on the booms at least

    but no Whitley’s exist?

But one will – thanks to “Whitley Project’s” dogged determination and single-mindedness – it is a case of “when” and not “if”

if all else fails you might try contacting Robert at dataplates4U

    https://rdrnl.home.xs4all.nl/dataplates.htm

He should be able to replicate one (or more) if you have a photo and the dimensions.

He made a dataplate for me for my 1943 10cwt GS trailer. It is a perfect reproduction

Is it an urban myth (surely it must be!) that in the 1970s RAFM were offered a “Whirlwind cockpit” but turned it down because as the said item was situated at RNEC Manadon it was assumed that it was from a Whirlwind with rotary wings rather than a Whirlwind with fixed wings. The cockpit was subsequently burnt in a fire fighting demo on a families day

The book grew out of a series of articles in the old original Airfix Magazine many many years ago so it cannot by any means be regarded as the ultimate (or even up to date) reference but I think it is still the only game in town.

There must be scope for a new book on the subject of RAF MT given the depth and range of recent research on vehicle colours and markings. It just needs somebody to write it………

Type 2601 = light tractor with winch – so your supposition is right

Reference: Wheels of the RAF page 66

I wonder if the top of the bonnet is a different colour. Perhaps yellow or orange for high visibility – apparently mandated sometime during 1944

Described on the BBC as a “pop-up museum” on Horse Guards Parade

Presumably the silver barrel vaulted building on the RHS is the Bus Museum. Is it regarded as a “temporary” structure or how else did they get permission to place such a structure in such a historic setting. I knew the Bus Museum was at Brooklands (and is on my bucket list of museums to visit) but I hadn’t realised how integral it was to the cluster of historic buildings on the site

For years now I have always thought that any catering at DX should be “themed” to the museum itself. How about a good old fashioned NAAFI with simple food that nearly everyone likes. I know there are a lot out there that hated the NAAFI, but with tweaks, it could work. Just look at East Kirkby to see how well that works. AI think the vast majority are not interested in “designer food” when on a day out and prices should be kept to a minimum as well.

The National Trust tea room/restaurant at Croome Park is similarly themed , using the old SSQ buildings from RAF Defford. It has the added benefit of a rather good little museum outlining the history of RAF Defford.

Now if only we can convince Jaguar to build limited edition Spitfire and Lancasters and from their Castle Bromwich site ?

Were any damaged during production where gaps in C/N exist ?

Funny how Jaguar keep finding unused blocks of chassis numbers – the programme about the run of Lightweight E types was shown again recently . I seem to remember that one or two experten were slightly sniffy about the new builds
