It doesnt “look” through, the pilot doesnt see images, but only symbols, the sensor used is the radar.

it is not boeing but US Commerce Department who decided to impose a tax on Bombardiers jets.. so, if an official US government body starts to do so, LM as a US company may just as well have to pay the bill.. that is, if Canada maintains its stand
Why specifically Lockheed Martin? If Canada intends to respond by initiating a trade war and going after US companies that aren’t party to the dispute – there’s a whole gamut of them across industries, from GE to GM, that do business in Canada.
Yes, the experience that F-35 pilot has is unique in a fighter jet, but there´s a bit of the augmented/virtual reality “thingy” in the Typhoon striker helmet.
I’ve never really understood how that’s supposed to work. The aircraft can project PIRATE FLIR imagery onto the Striker’s visor. Okay. But the FLIR would have a limited field of view. Just a forward cone, maybe +/-60 deg azimuth and +60/-30 deg in elevation. According to Scorpion, LDP input isn’t available or planned.

Agreed. Unless this opens a can of worms where Canada chooses to distance itself, albeit unwillingly, from US kit. If USA causes the Canadian aircraft industry sufficient avoidable problems it should not be surprised if Canada feels pushed to resort to other sources of supply. It is not as if Boeing and Lockheed were the sole purveyors of non-Eastern bloc effective supersonic fighters. Is military aviation commonality worth accepting the suppression of your civil aviation industry?
This is a trade dispute between the Boeing & Bombardier (supported by their respective govts) – nothing to do with Lockheed Martin.
The only way LM gets dragged in, is if the affair expands into a general trade war against the US. In which case, why stop at fighter jets – bilateral trade is wide & deep (defence being only a small part). They could go ahead and block US corporations from all Canadian state contracts (with the US likely responding in kind).
Alternatively, Canada could lodge an appeal with the WTO, and let a neutral party investigate & rule on the matter.
Not much to say – the Tejas & JF-17 are very similar aircraft. Similar size, similar payload, similar avionics, similar flight characteristics with the comparison holding even as they evolve (Blk 3 ~ Mk1A).
The J-10 is considerably larger – a Rafale/F-16E class fighter, though somewhat under-powered in comparison.

this leaves just Lockheed (F-35A) and BAe/Airbus (Typhoon) in the running to replace Belgiums F-16 fleet.

Tornado was not designed to fight Desert Storm, it was built to fly interdiction missions deep into Warsaw Pact territory. And as much as Coalition air forces liked to claim so at the time, Iraqi air defences were very unlike what could have been expected to be encountered over Eastern Europe. Their most powerful equipment were SA-5, SA-6, SA-8 and Roland – all of them at least 15 years old technology already back then! All of them had been met in combat by Western air forces (particularly the IDF) before, so their characteristics were well known and counter-tactics had been developed. By the mid-1980s, WP air space OTOH would have been defended by S-300, SA-11, Tor and Tunguska in substantial numbers – flying high in a non-VLO aircraft against the former two would have been a complete blood bath.
Except that NATO or at least US tactics had shifted from trying to bypass the air defences (which, yes, would have gotten them massacred at med-high altitude), to making the tackling of the ADGE their first order of business – with SARM-Ds, HARMs, EW and so on. While using F-117s, CALCMs, Tomahawks, etc for deep strikes. And of course, the B-2 might have been in service by the end of the decade, if the USSR hadn’t started to crumble gouging western defence budgets in the process.
A war between the two blocs would have been a bloody business either way. For both sides – the odds faced by the Soviets on offence, weren’t much better.
Sure, low-altitude losses might have been similar to Desert Storm on account of the SHORADS which were also more modern, but terrain masking by the more hilly terrain would have afforded at least some protection. You don’t need to stay undetected as in a “tunnel” from end to end, as long as nobody tracks you long enough to successfully guide a missile to your location you have a chance.
Oh come on! Low level in Iraq was a danger in and near the target area. Since the defences were mostly static, the rest of flight path was relatively low risk. Whole different situation in Europe, where AD would have been mobile, dispersed, plentiful & modern – SA-13s, SA-15s & Schilkas, topped up by Iglas everywhere. And then of course were the MiG-21s & MiG-29s running point defence.
Terrain masking works both ways – there’s no warning about what’s waiting round the bend for the pilot and relatively little room to maneuver if set upon by interceptors.

I didn’t mean that literally. I was talking in terms of how the assumptions that went into planning & tactics, were likely to have evolved in a few years time.
Vnomad, the Tomahawk was not given to the UK until years after GW1 and so was not a choice for the RAF in GW1 (historical context again).
In fact, the RAF opted to develop its own cruise missile with the CASOM requirement and eventually came up with something better than it was being offered by the US.
You could say the experience of GW1 informed their requirement there, but it has always been the Tornado that they used as the core of their cruise missile strike capability.
Point is, the JP233 employment wasn’t essential. Opting to use TLAM-Ds or PGMs (they were fighting as a coalition) against the airfields would been much safer. Heck, it would have been safer to let the Iraqi jets take off to be handled in the air.
And sure, the Tornado can be equipped with cruise missiles but then again so can the Mirage 2000, F-16, F-18 & Gripen. IMO had the Tornado program been deferred by just 6 or 7 years, the folks involved would have ended up opting for something more like the Mirage 4000 or F-15E i.e. a strike-fighter.

One line of discussion has been about the Tornado and the underlying concept and whether in retrospect it would have been better, in retrospect, to have pursued a different platform (like the F-15E, for example). Also, mentioned on that subject were the Israeli & US experiences.

Which includes, on one hand, improved terrain following radars allowing for lower altitude flight. As you quoted. And includes, on the other hand – hi-res SAR modes on fighter AESA radars filtering out ground clutter, JSTARS-type ground surveillance aircraft, mobile QR-SAMs, instantaneously slewing radar/EO-guided AAA systems, 4th gen MANPAD systems with FPA seekers. As I quoted.
I agree with you on TLAM-D. Not an option outside of the US back then, but yes it was in service by GW1.
Doubt that. Having transferred Polaris & Trident, I can see no reason why the US would balk at authorizing the sale of a conventional variant of the Tomahawk.
