Steve
Great shot of Mark flying low !!!
Steve.
How about trying aalco ? Aalco metals ltd, 25 high st, Cobham, Surrey, KT11 3DH. 01932 576820. We use this supplier.
Steve.
I cant imagine that the damage to the leading edge of wing was caused by cricket stumps given that wing skins are 14 SWG with thick butt strap inside. You would have to give heafy wack with iron bar to replicate damage !! Wasnt april the first by any chance !!!
Steve.
Ho-de-ho Mr saunders !!!
Its more than just aircraft recoveries, though.
Includes the Channel Convoys (Peewit), Dunkirk beaches, colour film from an RAF pilot (plus his story) and some stuff at Uxbridge.
Thats good, I thought that it was one dig over 3 days !!
Steve.
Hurricane i think at weymouth.
Steve
Was it on BBC or ITV ? see if its on I player or something !
Steve
Like it says “ideal world” ;)…. Real world is more 😡 than 🙂 There’s no way a shop can stay busy on just one project.
Have to say I prefer the split upper cowls like the P51 over the Spit one piece, those are absolute ******s when they arrive from IOW & need *a bit* of fetting to fit. At least with a P51 one person can easily pull or install all the cowls 🙂
Well thats why you are an airframe fitter , most spit bits require a bit of fettling to get that fit!!. All bits for spits are pretty much bespoke cos they are all different in some way!!!
Steve
ok, now go back & read my post again.. only this time pay attention to EVERY word…. because what you’re apparently talking about has NOTHING to do with what I said.
& how many Spitfires have you actually worked on? Are you part of AA on IOW?
ZRX61, re-read your post & you are talking about something completely different from the original posting !! What you are on about is assembly of all major components that have already been repaired/refubished/restored or remade & yes no doubt could be done in a year. I have worked on 10 spitfire restorations & have done parts for majority of those flying. Yep part of the AA team & have 40yrs in aviation with 16 of those on historic aircraft.
Steve
Original question “why do restorations take so long”. If I had the money I would have to buy an airworthy spit, assuming that one was for sale! I just wouldn’t have the attention span to wait 3 or 4 years or more to have one in the air !! Would be a good investment though !!
Steve
Interesting Steve….Being involved with production work in my “normal” job it was always my understanding that it takes as much to do multiple parts vs a single part when a tool or jig setup has been made.Is it a case of the industry still being too small even though there is still a demand for finding wrecks and rebuilding them.Watching the BBC slideshow of the MkI Spits and the level of commitment to reuse as much small stuff as possible I would think some part cacheing would exist for future projects.
With our replica/reproduction we have templated as much as possible with the hope that it helps some other poor ****** down the track.
Hi Qldspitty i’m not saying that we keep nothing on the shelf but what we have is limited & you are right sometimes its just as quick to do multiple parts as it is to do one off’s. We have many hundreds of jigs & tools & templates if parts need to be remade. My point about restoration on fuselages is that if we have a complete fuse then it is stripped right down to each component part ,then each component stipped of all its bits & as you know a fuse is made up of many thousands of pieces. It is often quicker to make from new but that is not the game we are in,. We will always use original items as long as structual integrity is not compomised.
Steve.
That won’t be 8 years at 40hrs/week.
If *everything* is already at hand, you don’t have to hunt or wait for any parts (or money) & you work at least 40hour weeks then 2 people can knock out a Spitfire in a year without too much bother.
Excuse me while I have a good laugh !!! If you think 2 people working 40hr weeks can put a spit back in the air then your name must be Paul Daniels. It would take that long to strip & survey a fuselage, refurb usable parts, sourse or make parts that arnt usable & start putting the thing back together. Even large aircraft companys dont keep parts on the shelf, they operate the can ban system or just in time system. Its not economic having parts on the shelf. Too much money tied up !!
Steve.
Hi Matthias, wow what a great job. Looks like money no object over there !! Keep up the execellent work,
Steve
