Cheers, Paul. I’ll take a shufti.
What annoys me about this kind of lazy journalism is that they seem to take liberties with aviation stories that they wouldn’t dare to take with other subjects. They wouldn’t dare (for example) refer to HMS Ark Royal as a submarine, or call a Challenger tank an Armoured Personnel Carrier, but it seems when it comes to aviation stories they can’t be bothered with a little basic research and think any old rubbish will do.
Has anyone else noticed there seems to be a lot more Magpies (at least in towns) than there used to be? Why might that be? Always make a point of saying “Good morning Mr Magpie” when I see one before Noon, even if it gets me some odd looks on the bus.

Hi All,
What amazes me is that like you say above we transmit for all and sundry, yet the odd thing is we haven’t received anything similar from deep space or at least that is what we have been told  Either that or any signal that has been captured hasn’t been deciphered yet ?Geoff.
Didn’t the US once have a programme to monitor radios signals from deep space? Think it once briefly picked up a signal way, way stronger than the natural (?) stuff popluarly called the “Wow!” signal or something after a handwritten comment on the read-out. Going to have to Google this when I get time.

I once read that all radio and TV transmissions just go on for ever into outer space. Depressing to think that some advanced intelligence out there may be judging us from watching old episodes of Crossroads or Mork & Mindy.

Jim, you (and others) see everything from a UK-centric perspective. Even the educated UK citizens really expect the rest of the world to be just like the UK (which is why you were so good in colonial times…and why eventually, you were kicked out of most colonies).
I really don’t think it advances your cause to try and reduce this to some US versus UK thing. For me, at least, it really isn’t like that, and if a US citizen were to criticise some particular aspect of UK culture (and heaven knows there is plenty worthy of criticism) I wouldn’t take it as being anti-British. What I don’t understand is why some sections of US society have this unhealthy love of firearms, with all the problems it brings (today’s incident being just the latest example)

Sorry to bring this back to life, but I simply had to post this.
The ultimate manifestation of ‘rights’

Doesn’t the population at large have any “right” to be protected from people patently not fit to hold a lethal weapon?
