Don’t mean to hijack this thread, but did anyone else see Michael Palin’s recent documentary about the last day of World War 1? So many lives pointlessly wasted between the signing of the armistice early in the morning and the actual ceasefire at 11.00. One American unit suffered 300 casualties just because their commander wanted to reach a town with bathing facilities. Sheer bloody madness.
These worthless little sh1ts can steal or damage things like this, but they can never even touch the respect and gratitude of the vast majority. The real memorials are in our hearts.
Cheers Merlin, I’ll give it a try. Failing that, I’ll just have to hope Bicycle Repairman shows up.
On the nail, except for the Leonides. This one had a Pratt and Witney which replaced the Cheetah, It’s general layout followed that found in the G.55 (DB) and G.59 Merlin while it’s younger sibling the G.46 started with a Gipsy Queen but later production used an Alfa engine. Really just clues as to the Fiat family.
Your go…..
John
Hi John. This chap says it was a Leonides-
Not sure (and at work so no time to check) but I think Phoenix was one of the constituent parts of English Electric when it was founded.
No takers on this one, It might take a Pratt or a Cheetah.
It comes from a long line of Warriors, it’s older sibling had an affair with a german but later married a wizard bloke and it’s younger sibling fancied a Gipsy Queen but ended up with an Alfa Romeo.
John
Aah, but was this actual one driven by a Roman matyr who lost his/her head? 😉
Thailand. Hoping to be there myself in January. Nice RTAF museum at Don Muang, too.

It’s the jumping on the bandwagon of outrage after the fact that seems IMHO to be ………..SHEEPLIKE!
Never felt annoyed about something you’ve read in a paper? Maybe the “Sheep” are those ignorant, brainless ones who think they are entitled to do whatever amuses them (if no one else) and to hell with the consequences or the effect on anyone else. Remember, Brand did something broadly similar over Rod Stewart’s daughter and was then forced to back down. To do that kind of thing not once but twice is not “edgey” it’s just plain stupid. And yet in a way I think Ross has come out of this looking the most pathetic. In that video clip you can almost hear him saying to his trendy young friend “Go on, Wussel. Say somefing weally naughty” I wonder if he’d find it so funny if, in a few years time, someone went on radio or TV revealing his daughter’s sex life?

Leavin’ on a jet plane. Bit dated now I know, but the line that has always somehow stuck in my mind is “Six O’clock, it’s early morning. Taxi’s waiting, he’s blowing his horn” Still seems somehow evocative of starting a long journey to distant shores.

I don’t agree with this “bandwagon” argument, ie that only two actual listeners complained at the time and so therefore it doesn’t matter. How is it different to anything else we react to when we read about it in the meeja, but never personally experience? I object to the “So-what-I-don’t give-a F- about you or anyone” attitude this kind of thing exemplifies and engenders, and if being deliberately offensive and saying inappropriate things is “cutting edge” comedy then Gawd elp us. I grew out of that kind of thing when I was about 12. The trouble with these so called comedians who lack imagination or invention and have to rely instead on the shock factor is that sooner or later they will inevitably overstep the mark and genuinely offend too many people. Look what happened to Kenny Everett after his “joke” about Michael Foot, or Hale & Pace after their sketch about putting a cat in the microwave. I like to think Russell Brand’s career will go down the pan in a similar way, but somehow I doubt it. As for Woss, I think he’s past it anyway.
