Shuttles in the autumn when they retire them from service.
Another giant leap backwards for mankind:( First the moon, then Concorde, now this. Is anything in place to replace them? I doubt it – no money I suspect. Ahh well it was nice while it lasted.

It’s all earth orbit stuff, though; since Apollo ended, we haven’t (in person) GONE anywhere.
I agree and I think it is a crying shame that we haven’t gone anywhere else. It feels to me as though we are now just playing in our own backyard.
It wont be long that men on the moon will pass from living memory. Its not as if technology has not moved on since then. After the moon landings we should have been looking at colonisation maybe set foot on Mars. IMHO I think it could have been done with all the technology advances we have had in the last 40odd years. When you think about it, it took less than that to go from tentative steps into the air to jet power and less than 7 years to put a man on the moon even with the ‘limited’ technology we had in the 1960s.
We just seemed to be focusing these days on fighting petty wars rather than furthering mankinds reach into space (but thats a debate for another thread)
Maybe mankind has lost its desire to explore.
I find myself asking are NASA going to loose another capability here, should they have developed a new Shuttle?
I think they are, which is one of the reasons I think we are taking a leap backwards for mankind. Didnt the UK toy with the idea of a ‘Space Shuttle’? IIRC I think it was call HOTOL or something.

beat me to it
Nice find. As an educated guess the brackets would be used to hold the cabling that plugs in to the aircraft.

The show I would like to see come back was one that was on BBC2, it was called The Air show and presented by Julian Tutt. They have the perfect presenter to bring it back now in James May.
I remember that one too. IIRC it was also presented by the rather lovely Hazel Irvine. I remember the ‘Test Pilot’ series too, I think I my have it on VHS somewhere.
I would love to see the ‘Perpetual Motion’ series repeated. They told the stories of allsorts of different machines like the Moggy Minor and the Blackpool Tram. It was narrated by Warren Clarke. One of my favourites was a show about the Shackleton shown shortly before they retired in ’91
Here’s another one this time on Channel 4 (i think) I was three
(puts it at 1993) when it was shown and it was about F-14’s (i think from VF-84) it was a documentary but i’ve no clue other than i can remember a shot of a two Tomcats flying next to a snow capped mountain
There was a show repeated recently on History channel called Jetstream following a group of RCAF pilots learning to fly the CF/A18 Hornets at Cold Lake

Don’t think it as a series but a one of episode of the Science type show QED.
It appeared to be a single nonstop view of the UK coastline from a camera mounted on a Hawk I think….the stinger at the end as they explained how they did it, was that it was a rear facing camera and the footage was being show in rewind.
This show is available on the BBC iPlayer in the BBC Archives

They did and can be seen in the ‘Repeat please’ scene with the Poles. You can see them in the background with the tailplane braces.

Is it just me, or can you see one gable of the burnt out WW1 hangar at far right in the first shot? 😮
Wonderfully evocative pics by the way. Thanks for sharing.
Could this be the one that was blown up for the film?

I think this is exciting news and I cant wait to see her in the air. Do we need another flying Lanc? As has been asked before it is like saying do we need another Spitfire or Mustang? I agree with Daz – why not?
At the end of the day this is the culmination of several years of hard work and the realisation of two mens dream of seeing their own Lancaster in the air. As the brothers said in the radio interview ‘Its a memorial to Bomber Command, dont ever forget it’
I for one hope they acheive their dream. The very best of luck to them.

Has there been any official confirmation that ‘Jane’ will be in Dambusters? or is it just speculation/assumption that she will be fly?
It may be just me but there seems to be a lot of speculation that the restoration to fly is for the film and and that PJ is funding it. I havent seen or heard anything from the Pantons to say this is the case other than that she will fly and the restoration is being funded by the museum.
Anyway just watched a documentary (circa 1984) about Avro Shackletons, amazing photography and footage of 56 squadron Phantoms scrambling to intercept a Badger.
I remember that one. I still have it somewhere on VHS. IIRC it had interview footage with ‘Bomber’ Harris and finished with a Shackleton on fire on a dump somewhere.

Co-presented by BBC Weather presenter, Helen Young who was training for her PPL and whose husband was a BA pilot IIRC.
Good series!
It was presented by Julian Tutt, Simon Calder and Hazel Irvine, among others, who now does the sports programmes on the BBC. She is currently covering the Winter Olympics.
The girl taking her PPL was Fenella George and her progress was followed on the show.
