For me it would have to be Chipmunk WP896 the first aircraft I flew in with Sally B on one side and PA474 on the other

Just googled it was July 21 1996 at Barton, killing the crew, a sad loss of both men and machine

Apart from this, 633 and Mosquito Squadron, was E-HT in any other films.
    Sorry to go off thread.

IIRC E-HT was Ex BAe operated Mosquito RR299 (RIP) and she also appeared strafing a Gestapo security HQ in an episode of ‘Secret Army’ which was the inspiration for the spoof ‘Allo Allo’. Unfortunately the aircraft crashed and was destroyed some years ago, cant remember when though.

Sadly, even paying the extra to have a few digital cable channels including the US version of Discovery Wings didn’t work! It is now re-named….wait for it…..(insert fanfare here)….’THE MILITARY CHANNEL!!!!’ You can imagine what that is like.

I hope the UK version doesn’t go the same way. every time I see a military type doc on other channels (Discovery Civilisation the biggest culprit) it seems to be all about the tank war with the odd ship thrown in. At least Wings for the most part for all its faults is aviation related.

Incidentally did anyone catch Robbie Coltranes prog on superchargers? Lots of excellent footage of Spitfire TE566 and ‘109 Black 6 (sadly missed in the air) in flight.

I hope the project ‘takes off’ (excuse the pun) it sound like a great idea. I agree Discovery Wings has gone a bit stale. and some good ideas have been put forward here.
There was a couple of series that was shown on beeb 2 a few years ago called ‘Airshow’ which showed a good spectrum of aviation related articles, snippets are still shown on the UKTV network. I like the Bruce Dickinson/Mark Williams/Robbie Coltrane approach to presenting as they make the viewer more interested than some one droning on for an hour.

Flightline would be a good choice too but I would ditch that Brendan ‘Super Cheesy’ OBrien bloke and swap for some one like Bruce, Mark, Robbie or even Chris Barrie who I thought did a good job for his ‘Massive’ Series or even Mark Evans from the ‘Is Born’ series.

Over the years we have had movies about ‘how we won the war single handed’ from both the American side and the British. but very few taken if any taken from the view of the Axis powers, Tora, Tora, Tora and Bridge at Remagen come to mind but they used both sides perspective. If we are going to do a ‘remake’ of Battle of Britain, or any war movie, why not make it from the perspective of the Germans telling of their frustration of not being able to crack the allied defences whilst suffering because of politically bad decisions on their side of the fence. you never know it may resurrect some exitinct German aircraft like the Stuka, Ju88, Do17, Me110 or He111.

WP896 but then lost my F3822 so my first recorded flight that I still have is WK624 both from 10 AEF at Woodvale would have to consult my replacement 3822 for an exact date but it was around October 1983. Hope they are still around and still have the original Gypsy Major in, the Lycoming coversions just dont look right

I remember helping out at the Blackpool RAF Town Show and one of the exhibits was the replica Nimrod fuselage, we were constantly asked if it was a submarine! One smart alec, when he spyed the wheels of the two trailers it was made up of, said they were for when the pilot wants to land it on the seabed!

Just been watching a programme on the history about Percy Pilcher who built a powered triplane 4 years before the Wrights and an exact replica that was built to see if it would fly and fly further than the Flyer (as Pilcher was killed in his gilder before he could test the powered machine)

The replica flew for 1m27s IIRC.

I guess the point was, it got some people flying who couldn’t afford it any other way.

But I agree about the looks. This cartoon sums it up perfectly!

Cracking cartoon! By A ‘Whats the point’ aeroplane I meant that it looks like one of those pre-Wright Bros. attempts at making a flying machine that was doomed to failure. As there were/are better designs it makes you think ‘Whats the point? – It’ll never take off!’ Maybe they were trying to go back to those bygone days! 🙂

My candidate would have to be the Mignet Pou de Ceil (Flying Flea) – a ‘Whats the Point’ aeroplane.
