Perhaps I am being dumb here, but why couldn’t a 318 use the same taxiways as say the RJ100 at LCY? Physically surely the 318 isnt that much bigger than say an F50 or an RJ100?

The best way to get there if you are walking (from say Hatton Cross tube) is to head towards the Jurys Inn hotel and then follow the road at the back of it – this will take you up past the back of the maintenance hangars and round this area – you end up at the “sheds” with the maintenance apron on your left – its a good 20-30 min walk depending on how much gear you are carrying! Be cautious though as they are working on making new pavements there at the moment and some of the construction guys get pretty ****ty if you walk on their nice new pavements!!! lol

    Thanks all….

I went to Spot 3 as described here – http://www.londonaviation.co.uk/photoguide/lhr.htm

This is a very good guide! Although I can now report for definate that the level crossing by the maintenance area is now CLOSED off and inaccessible…..you will have a long walk (circa 30 mins) from Hatton Cross to get round to the Northern perimeter…

They are flight testing the 318 I think in Switzerland (please correct me if this is wrong) for this…..I am pretty sure it is doing well in this certification process too..

See below for some info from Airboose…..(!)

Airbus has taken an important step forward in making the A320 series available for restricted airports such as London City, with the planned certification of the A318 for steep approaches. An aircraft has completed an approach with representatives of the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) on board. Steep approaches are classified as those with a glide slope of greater than 4.5[degrees]. Airbus is seeking certification for 5.5[degrees]. The performance of the A318 should allow it to operate out of LCY, the out of production AVRO RJ the only over 100-seat aircraft currently approved for the airport. However it is not all plain sailing at London City. Should the A318 be allowed in, other problems would arise, including apron operations and the use of boarding lounges originally designed for the 50-passenger DHC Dash 7. http://www.airbus.com Sep 12, 2005

Mind you – 318s are a LOT noisier than any RJ100!!! That will go down like a poo in a pool with the local residents…..perhaps that’s why there is a University Hall of Residence nearby? 😉
