John the red bits are in fact the blanks, also worth noting is that the nose is covered as well.
And i just noticed that the external tanks are Hindenburgers not the usual Gr1/b style. Maybe this photo isnt as old as it looks. the reprint date on the back of photo is 1999.
Dave, what film was that ? be interested to see that .
Barn Owl, surely they would of just moved it somewhere else as apposed to taking time to lift it upon there ?
It appears to be secured by wire at the nose wheel and fabric by the drop tanks.
Flood i meant a test of its own TF ground mapping radar, sorry should of been clearer
Although not as involved in the preservsation side of things as some of you undoudtably are, and prefering the jets as well. I still think that preservation of aircraft is important regardless of type and nationality. The airframes to me are symbols of the times when they were active in the roles they were designed to fulfill. They are part of our history and as others have said if you take away the sacrifices and hardship suffered by the pilots, ground crew and designers and others to create a character for those aircraft as a group or individual airframes they are only bits of metal.
Fact is someone will always disagree with something whatever Duxford or any other museum decides to do. That is the nature of the beast. I do however think its important to remember the individual remits of those museums.
One sad fact is that through out the whole preservation scene there is a growing tendency towards a political atmosphere. We should and could work together to achieve the end goal. Preservation of our history all around the world.
I thought it could either be a radar signature test or possibly some kind of gun calibration setup. Though cant see why they would need to raise it up for that.
Other possibility i thought of is that it is some kind of lightning strike/bad weather test.
Have to say though the radar test theory is favourite for me. Only things left is when and where? And which airframe it is.
Nor i suspect would you want to ? Mind you the older women may be apealling to some of you ……………..
I to had this kind of oppurtunity and it truly is a great experience, My trip was about ten years ago and i would love to do it again. The sound of Conways at full fettle used to wake me up most mornings and the VC10 will always be on of my favourites. Nice pics anymore ?
And it looks better than Debbie McGee, However you look at it !!
Possibly seen a mouse, but cant see it being compression tests , would’nt be tied down ? More likly to be suspended for that ?
Nice shots especially the F86 any Tornado pics ?
I just wondered, i’ve never seen that paint type of scheme applied to the B17 before. Is is an early form of camofluage scheme ?
(tongue in cheek ) You’ll have to forgive me the pics are older than me, but i looked throught all my books and not seen anything similar. Any body ?
