Impressive and revolutionary as the new generation of aircraft are, the coming decade promises even more surprises according to the following article. I’m particularly keen on the VAATE program and the enhanced range and performance capabilities it will provide the F-22 and F-35. Simply amazing.
Could be ones from belarus or Ukreine !!!
the USAF was reported to have smugled out some flankers from there
Very possible IMO.. “private collector” = CIA.. I’d always assumed for years now that the USAF had gotten its hands on some flankers or at least its pilots had somehow gotten extensive hands-on time to do a thorough evaluation of its capabilities. This is based on a number of comments and interviews of USAF brass over the years where they seemed so familiar with the Flanker relative to the F-15 in particular..
I found a reference about 2 Su-27s being sold to a”private collector” in the U.S. on another forum.. no way to verify accuracy though.
I agree with EdLaw….especially the laser weapon part. Which means the advances should come from the onboard power generation because i don’t think even the F22 and F35 can generate that much power to sustain non-chemical based laser weapons. In terms of chemical based…it may not give more shots than missiles and at being less flexible in certain conditions. It is a line of sight weapon afterall, meaning very easy to give away your location (a few seconds of lasing is just too long) if the enemy manage to lose the laser tracking. We may see sales pitch such as…enough power to power New York 😀
The F-35B should be able to generate quite a bit of electricity if you pull out the liftfan and plug in a generator hooked upto the driveshaft.
Personally I do not like this usage of generational classifications to categorise fighters. Fighter development is a continual evolutionary process and not one which can easily be broken down. For instance, what generation is an F-16A? 4th? well if so what is an F-16E? 4.5? 5th? 4.7469138? I just think that such systems are a marketing tool, our airplane is 5ht gen theirs is only 4th so buy ours sought of thing.
Yeah, i agree. This classificationsystem is aimed more towards laymen and probably most imprtantly, the politicians who control the money to pay for them.
One thing to condsider is that there is no longer a USSR so the urgency that seemed to drive weapons development and procurement isn’t at the same level as during the cold war. Having said that, I think that there’s very little merit in the argument that since the USSR is gone, the Raptor should have been scrapped. Crazy. The mission requirement for for dominance against a constantly improving threat will always be there though the adversaries may change.
Barring the development of some overwhelming new threatening technolgy, I don’t see the USAF coming out with the requirements for a 6th gen fighter for another decade or even longer. Right now the US technological lead as embodied in the F-22 and the coming F-35 is so vast and I see this even widening in the future despite other countries efforts to catch up. The USAF should continue efforts to procure as many of these platforms and others like the long-range strike aircraft as it thinks it needs to achieve it mandate; hopefully the politicians will keep an open mind.
Firefox.
If they can/want to afford the cost, then why not?

I think its not as simple as saying “I have US$billions and am willing to spend it to catch up with the US”.. along with mountains of money, it took a couple of decades of R&D and sureley a lot of mistakes as well before the US got it right.. unless other countries have access to that secret knowledgebase, they’ll have to follow the same time-consuming process. It’s not just like you can jump to the head of the line. In the meantime, the US isn’t standing still and is working on a 6th generation fighter.
Pin-point strikes are only a viable option where targets can be easily…pin-pointed. Don’t think Hezbulla fighters are obliging enough to stand out in the open with big crosshair placards telling the IDFAF where to drop their bombs.
There are quiet grumbles that the IDF are thinking that since the people in the areas where Hez’ are hiding are overwhelmingly supportive of Hez’, it doesn’t matter all that much if civilians are killed, since they are ‘on their side’ anyways.
But when you’re targeting a single house in a congested neighborhood, a SDB could get the job done without taking out all the houses alongside it..
A versatile missile you describe would make sense a lot of ways. Does this program have a name already?
Looks like it needs more work. If the size can be reduced to 3 x 20-ft. containers, and the cost brought down a bit, then maybe it will be worth deploying.. or maybe an electric-powered version will come along. Anyway, thanks fopr the info.
Ideally, the Israelis could probably use a lot of 250-lb SDBs instead of heavier bombs that they have been using if only to minimize collateral damage.. why use a sledgehmmer when a tack hammer will get the job done in most instances?
Is it not the case that regardless of stealth the F-22/35 would probably stay BVR against and aircraft like this ? Once they have been seen, against a Mig-29OVT they would have lost most of their advantages and although they may have better sensor systems and missiles the playing field becomes a great deal more level when within visual range due to the 29’s agility ?
Fantastic agility by the MiG and it would be a handfull WVR. Definitely for airshow fans its the best around and will help spur sales. However, it is still at an overwhelming disadvantage vs the F-22 and F-35 BVR. Its akin to going up against a sniper who can see you coming and at best you only have a vague idea as to his location which is constantly changing. You could be dead several times over before you ever get within WVR. At that point things even up and its a knifefight and those with the better knives and training win.
Space-based radars are also in development and one of the first applications will be to provide J-STARS capabilities to map any future battleground. This will provide another layer of tactical recon and one that will be hard to target.
I think the Qahir class of Oman is a cute little ship
other wise, in a rising sea of angled stealthy looking ships, the feroucious look of top heavy Russian/Soviet warships is much more appealing.
First time I heard a warship called “cute”. LOL
