The Flankers appearantly came from Belarus. Steve Touchdown knows the original report of them being spotted aboard an (IIRC) An-124 making a stopover (at Prestwick?) on their way to the US.

I wouldn’t rule out that the Russian stuff being flown at Groom Lake has been given civilian-style registrations. Besides, some of those Russian construction number already look a lot like FAA registrations. If you don’t mind fifteen numbers after the N, that is.

There was no Dutch air force in 1944, but Me-163s did fly from an airbase here. So those were the first aircraft without props to fly here. First domestic jet was the Fokker S.14, which flew in 1955.

Why Estonia above Latvia? Even if you do know the difference between the three Baltic states, you surely don’t know the sizes of their airforces. A hint: Estonia’s airfleet can be counted on the fingers of one hand, but for Latvia you need two.

That’s the Red Hats squadron, not the ‘Red Eagle’. A number of these airframes (the US had quite a few WarPac aircraft, especially since Egypt switched sides to the West) is now preserved here and there. For example, the MiG-23BN in the Brussels museum was a former instructional airframe for the US at Ramstein. Other aircraft are at the petting zoo at Nellis, a yard with WarPac stuff for US military personell to get acquainted with.

Currently, it seems that the Red Hats operate at least two Su-27s and a few other WarPac types from Groom Lake – these aircraft were spotted en route to the US, and a few blurry pics of them above Area 51 are to be found on the net. I believe the former Moldavian MiG-29s the US bought are all accounted for in musea and other collections – i don’t think any of those are flying. I think there are two civilian-registred MiG-29s in the US as well, which are/were on the ‘warbird’ circuit.

That missile has come off the rail during landing – just a failed attachment point. No “armed hardpoint” or “accidental launch by the pilot because he had his hands in places where he shouldn’t keep them” or any kind of that BS. Please. At least look at the pictures first before giving your own tabloid-sensationalised-version of what happened :rolleyes:
