My totally subjective two milli-zlotties…
I don’t think there is all that much we can actually do about improving the quality of these boards except for trying to keep our ‘own’ posts on at least some sort of standard. What that standard is, is obviously totally subjective: i do know from myself that i am far more tolerant towards asinine rubbish posted by people like Flood or Snapper or Ren or a bunch of others, for the simple reason that i know that in other threads those posters are very capable of putting up very interesting and worthwile topics or replies. Considering i only visit the Historic and Military boards on a regular basis, this automatically means i’ll be annoyed much sooner by people from the bus board – i can’t make a comparison about their ‘value’ to this board because their serious posts simply fall outside of my scope of interest. There is no way i can balance the crap some of the bus-people post like i can balance the stuff from the military and historic post peoples.
Also, even if i have complained a number of times about the (percieved) decline in quality of these boards, i don’t think we should get all too nostalgic about the old days. There were plenty of annoying/stupid/ignorant/unpleasant people around then which are gone by now, while on the other hand we definately gained a number of very valuable posters over the years too.
There are a few things which do annoy me tremendously though. Blatant nationalistic navel-staring is one of them. I can understand it if one is passionate about his country, and acts accordingly. But in my opinion these boards (particularly the military forum) have quite an international character, and i think it happens way too often that a certain ‘national interest group’ hijacks the forum, hence forcing it’s own narrow view of the subject of the board onto the other users.
Another thing i really hate, is when people like to hide their posts in a pile of totally irrelevant and/or epilepsy-provoking dung. Long signatures (yes, i’ve been in an airplane once too you know), using colours pretending to be all funky, stuff like that. It’s useless, it’s annoying, it makes me scroll too much. Yuk.
I’m sure some more will come up later though…
Oh yeah: i don’t like it when people use similar avatars either. I was really happy with them, but if everyone is going to use Mr. Burns or an Indian flag or some sort of airliner tail, i would have to actually read the usernames again. And i am very, very lazy…
