CH-46, CH-47, H-21 Banana, HUP Retriever, HRP, HRP-2, YH-16. All from the Piasecki stable.

The Kamov K-225S, first flight in 1951. One piston-powered K-225 saw military service in the USAF as the H-22, and the USN bought some as HTK-1. I don’t know if the HTK-1s were turbine or piston powered. Yes, i looked this up 😀

3. The first carrier landing by a jet aircraft. Type, ship, date.
British early jet stuff – Flood’s department 😉

4. Name the first jet aircraft furnished a thrust reverser.
First operational fighter with one was the Viggen,

5. Name all strategic bombers with six and more engines.
Tupolev’s 95-1 prototype of the Bear actually had two coupled TV2 turbines in each nacelle, so that counts IMHO.
Then there were the obvious ones:
B-36, B-47, XB-48, XB/YB/YRB-49, later series of B-50s (KB-50J and -K at least), B-52, YB-60, XB-70. I’m ignoring attacheable rocket pods here, but then you can count in the A3D and Mirage IV at least too.

6. The biggest loss to the SAC bomber fleet on a single day. Date, location, aircraft, cause.
Yeah, as Frank said the B-36 massacre by a tornado/hurricane/typhoon (none of them of the aircraft kind) at Carswell AFB, TX on September 1st, 1952. I believe only one was actually written of, the rest were all rebuild (for a large part with whole new assemblies though). There is great info and pics on this at http://www.cowtown.net/proweb/tornado/tornado.htm which is a page of an extremely interesting B-36 site.
More of an operational nature, the USAF lost about a dozen B-52 to SAMs during the Linebacker II against North Vietnam in December 1972. Top night was 20/21 December on which fout B-52Gs and two B-52D’s were lost.

7. I had a similar question in a quiz before. Name four USAF aircraft flown with tracked undercarriage.
C-82, B-36, B-50, and a P-40 although that was a USAAF one.

8.1. What was the “Convair Crusader”?
The NB-36H, a flying nuclear power testbed. Also known as X-6 and XB-36H i believe.
8.2. What is the special history of that aircraft?
It was one of the aircraft damaged badly at the Carswell tornado 51-5172 to be exact, after which it was bailed back to Convair (conveniently, the Convair plant was just across the runway from Carswell AFB IIRC) and turned into a nuclear testbed.
8.3. When was its first mission and when the last?
As NB-36H? First flight Sep 17th 1955, final one March 28th 1957. Funny thing was that every test flight of it was accompanied by a C-97 full with Marines. If the Crusader were to crash, the Marines would parachute out of the C-97 to secure the crash site.

9. RAF operated a handful of English Electric Canberras for SIGINT.
9.1. What made WT305 and WJ775 easily distinguishable?
The pepperpot on top of the fuselage, with an IR sensor in it.
9.2. When did RAF end its Canberra operations?
Not yet. 39(1PRU)sqn still flies ’em. The last EW Canberra’s were the Canberra T.17s with 360sqn, although these were actually ECM trainers/agressors. This unit stood down around 1993.

The USAF was the first to bring the Canberra there, these were B-57B’s arriving (and immediately crashing) at Bien Hoa on August 5th, 1964.
10.4. date of departing that theatre
The 13BS withdrew it’s last B-57G’s (the whoa cool laser-nosed Canberras) from Vietnam in April 1972. The Australians were there from 1967 to 1971, and the RVNAF had B-57B’s painted in their colours from 1965 to 1967.

Should have said that in advance (if it was on one of the two Beebs i get here in the hilly parts of the Netherlands), i would have loved seeing it.

His last album had one of the most beautiful songs ever IMHO. “I hung my head” is such a wonderful and touching combination between song and singer, it’s almost creepy. Absolutely wonderful.

I think Vympel really deserves credit for this – John Pike must have had hundreds of emails complaining on his recognition skills, including (long ago) a few from this direction.

The lack of corrections was a bit troublesome. I remember having a discussion with Ja Worsley on that J-8II pic in the Su-15 section of FAS… “Are you saying you know better than the professionals at FAS?” :p
