I never understood why the cult-maniacs proclaimed Plan 9 from Outer Space the worst film ever. Of course it’s terrible, but so is every film by Ed Wood. I think Glenn or Glenda (about the right to be a drag queen, which is perfectly normal unlike those disgusting perverted homosexuals) outweirds Plan 9 by a very, very wide margin.

Of course, Bela Lugosi also stars in Glenn or Glenda.

Ah, good. I already feared this thread went down the drain, but i see the level of discussion is rising again. Now my only hope is that the webmaster immediately deletes anything vaguely coherent, factual and/or non-insulting, as those are only a waste of bandwith.

A few years ago on another forum, i used ‘God’ for an alter-ego login name. Had a lot of fun with that. Great fun, threatening people with brimstone and floodings and locusts and stuff. Although some people were a bit upset.

Inventing new words is fun. I think using well-known words in a new-yet-not-entirely-redicilous-but-definately-weird context is even better though, as it focuses the reader/listener more to the context of what you’re saying and not the new word itself.

It’s unfortunate, i think, that while creative use of language in poetry or literature is considered ‘art’ , whereas a little creativity in everyday talking/writing/babbling is frowned upon in some circles. I just don’t understand that people who admire writers for using beautiful language in their work (Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Nabokov) are often so terribly conservative in everyday language.

It is a shame that quite a bit of everyday language-creativity is associated with subcultures. Not only does this kill the original creative idea because the linguistic novelty suddenly is part of this subculture and hence has to be followed (yuppiespeak and boyz-on-da-hood-speak are obvious examples), but also because outsiders will form their view on that language based more on that subculture than anything else.

There is a lot of snobism in the latter: “intellectuals” saying they absolutely love poetry for the ” beautiful, creative use of language” while they refuse to accept that there is a lot of absolutely brilliant use of language to be found in rap and hiphop (not only in English – i think the best lyricist we currently have in Dutch music are in hiphop). Accusations for me being a hypocrite are welcome though: i absolutely hate yuppiespeak and fluffy-leftist-sociobabble. Not only because i think the language itself is ugly, but definately also because i hate the subcultures they represent.

Don’t forget that Liberians (well, the not-native ones) really feel close with the US since the whole country has been founded as a new Heimat for liberated American slaves – the capital Monrovia is named after president Monroe. This also is how they get boys-from-da-hood names like Charles Taylor and Prince Johnson (Charlie’s nemesis during the previous civil war, a few weeks/months/years ago). This is also the reason why many Liberians still have high hopes the US will rescue them.

Unfortunately, part of Liberia’s problems are because when former American slaves settled, the native peoples were forced to move inland, and have since become second-class citizens. Somewhere in the 20th century they started to realise what happened, and a first series of rebellions broke out. Those inland-rebels were quite soon hijacked by the ‘newcomers’ (Afro-American Africans, so to speak) for their own political purposes. In the early 1990s, both Johnson and Taylor made large use of drugged-up ‘inland’ child soldiers. This also explains the interesting military concepts of soldiers fighting butt naked/wearing wigs/wearing (wedding) dresses/…

But don’t forget that the horror could have been much worse. Just imagine what could happen if some military advisor/NGO/journalist/diplomat/aid worker explains those soldiers that accuracy will increase tremendously if you start aiming that AK, in stead of dancing around and spraying bullets…

Best buttwiping paper IMHO is Stalin’s Revenge, the proletarian paper available in the then-GDR. Excellent scraping, and if you’re a modeller the stuff was suitable as sanding paper as well.

Never use barch leaves, as those will give you a terrible itch and possibly a rash. Corn leaves might seem suitable, but they tear very easily when used for such purposes. Not to be recommended either.
