RE: Blue Angels
Loudest fighter? Definately a MiG-25 igniting its two suns at the rear…
Phantoms were loud too, but it differed quite a bit which version. The old -C and -D models were really high-piched (much like two F-104s), which was unfortunately gone with the -E and -G models. The British F-4J’s weren’t high-pitched either, but i can’t tell about more naval variants. Nevertheless, i remember British Spey-powered Phantoms to be louder than regular ones. One 19sqn-bird did permanent damage to my ears (thanks a lot). The nice J79-sound can easily be compared with the noise of Soviet R27, R29 and D30F (the MiG-31 engine).
Any jet flying low over your house is to sound loud, but an F-18 is actually one of the quieter fighters. It doesn’t compare with the noise generated by something like the Tornado, F-14 or F-15.
Oh, and Phantom: that Sewer Hornet might indeed look impressive (especially the professionally misaligned pylons – take a close look at those to amaze the design and development skills involved with this aircraft), but looks don’t say anything about performance.

Arthur
