    John,

I struggled slightly to understand the context of your first post (who or what does the “Yes, but….” refer to?) and the question itself can’t be answered. Its hypothetical. To predict accurately the future attendance at any museum would be a skill many of us would be interested in obtaining! Then your last post; your ‘non-controversial’ answer seems to want distinct financial information, and doesn’t really answer your first question about the future attendance figures anyway.

If you’re basing your (potential) donation on whether you think a museum is doing well financially and in terms of visitor numbers then I think you have the wrong outlook on things. I donate to projects and museums when I think they are doing a good job of preserving aviation heritage – in Gatwick’s case in the face of quite a bit of adversity from the local authorities – and not on whether 100,000 people have been through the gate.

It seems to me that of course they’re going to hope the paying public will attend.

    Regards,

    Rich

May 2010 was when XV232 arrived at Coventry. Several forum members were watching her arrival from a viewing platform cunningly disguised as a Shackleton!

Ian, blue_2’s cowling panels were in exchange for manual labour! We needed more hands on to get the mainwheels out of the back of the store. Come on down some time, we’re still going strong.

Nimrod needs a lot of work – the team tell me the nosewheel steering needs some work, and that over a long period since she arrived some of the fire bottles were discharged. I believe the eventual aim may be taxying, but its some way off.

No new Shackleton – one is quite enough!!

    Hi all,

Not much progress on WR963 this weekend, other than the replacement of some electrical components in the No 2 generator’s control system. The aircraft was also being cleaned internally ready for Coventry opening its doors again on April 5th. There were several people going hard at cleaning and painting around the site (most of which seemed to be dedicated members of the Classic Air Force GST (Ground Support Team) – though there seemed to be a few people wandering around who weren’t part of our teams or theirs??

Over on the newly washed Nimrod power had been applied from a borrowed houchin, and the APU was successfully started and all four engines turned over dry. It looks as if XV232 will be awake next weekend, and on the 5th April if all goes well. For a wash and some covers XV232 is starting to look really smart again, and the enthusiasm put in by the relatively new team is invigorating.

A few of us departed to the stores, and with numbers boosted by blue_2 his partner Ali, and slightly afterwards Ben Nash – we were able to start digging out some spare mainwheels; a task we’ve been wanting to be doing for the last few months but has been stalled by the moving of lots of large boxes in the way. We now have two mainwheels ready for dispatch to another Avro group, with more to follow. This means we’ve got rid of four so far, with potentially four more to go, and created quite a free area of space.

Taking advantage of the fact you can now see the floor, we also sorted out a few of the surplus cowlings and tried to make a bit more sense out of the many mounds of brown boxes all infuriatingly marked with nothing more than ’26FP’… Rather happily we found a number of boost controllers and a starter motor or two… but there’s definitely still more to go at.

Arriving back at Coventry in the afternoon we were met by Peter Mills from Gatwick, who we’d promised to lend some Shack tools to help with dismantling WR974, and also to donate some new MR3 mainwheel covers for WR982. Although only a quick visit due to the distance he had to cover it was nice to catch up and get the latest GAM Shackleton news from him.

My next update will be 5th April for opening day.

    Regards,

    Rich

    Hi all,

WR963 carried out a successful ground run of all four engines on Sat 8 March. It marked the 65th anniversary of the flight of the prototype Shackleton, and also on 11th March, WR963 herself was 60 years old. Various visitors came from far and wide, but one gentleman watching from the DC6 Diner turned out to be a CAA Design Surveyor! He claimed not to know much of Shackleton, but was straight onto the pertinent point of the wing top spar boom, so probably knew more than he was letting on. Unfortunately I didn’t catch his name, but he was very pleasant and I hope we meet him again in due course.

The next ground run is 5th April 2014, in support of “Classic Air Force – Coventry” opening its gates to the public at weekends… something we’ve all been missing which will bring much needed life back into the place. The guys have also been busy coaxing life out of Nimrod XV232 (with the help of some borrowed members of the Elvington team) and giving her a much needed wash. If all goes well she should also run in some form on 5 April. An attempt to start was made on 8 March, but with the big houchin out of action our trolley acc just wasn’t man enough for the job.

So how’s WR963 faring lately? Quite well is the answer! The radio is working, the fuel priming issue seems to be behind us, and the pneumatics are behaving as they should with minimal leakage. The annoying thing was we could have taxied on the last ground run if we’d had a pilot available and a bit of Nitrogen to top the pneumatics up before we started.

As always, there’s a few things on the snag list – we have a coolant change to do on No 2 engine as its still running the old AL-3 instead of a modern equivalent, the bracket that secures the hydraulic hand pump handle in the down position has fractured, and there’s a little bit of taping to attend to that the wind and weather had over winter. We’ve also had a couple of ‘dolls eye’ indicators fail on the electrical panel, so if anyone knows where I might find a few spares we’d appreciate an pm or e-mail.

Speaking of spares, we are starting to weed out some of our stock that is not required – so I’d appreciate it if any Shack groups that need parts get in contact if you’re looking for anything in particular, to make sure you get first pick of anything we have before it gets sold off to other groups and collectors.

    Regards,

    Rich

    Hi all,

Just a reminder that WR963 will be ground running this Saturday, to celebrate her 60th birthday.

Also, a plea for volunteers! With work starting in earnest on Nimrod XV232, we could do with more hands working on both aircraft – so if you’re local to the area (or aren’t put off by a bit of a journey) and want to join in you’ll be more than welcome.

    Regards,

    Rich

Unfortunately Zazzle are a bit over the top when it comes to this.

One chap over on WIX wrote to the MOD a while back over the same issue. 8th post down in this thread.

It ought to be clearer thats for sure. That way UK warbirds could openly benefit from similar marketing of places on a flight (paying passenger or not!). Maybe this will form a precedent of sorts?

charliehunt – read the pdf link I posted. That is the CAA’s position. As for who exactly funded the flights by BBC/others its not important, but you can be sure that it wasn’t done for free, whether ‘invited’ or not..

The point is that at some point money changed hands – but that doesn’t necessarily mean that a person is a passenger.

I’ve no doubt CWH will get their Lancaster here, and there will be people enjoy a flight. There’s no way they would come all the way across without getting the CAA involved early on in the planning of things.

Sure. So when Top Gear had three Spitfires for a day it was being done just for the hell of it? Or when the McGregor boys were having a go? It was being paid for!

Paid for by who, and how exactly – that is the important bit, and its one of the biggest grey areas going. When is a passenger not a passenger?

With regards to the passenger issue –

How do you think you get celebrities in Spitfires and the like? Or the ‘Bomber Crew’ TV documentary participants using Sally B? Or how Classic Flight used to have club members flying in the Meteor? The key word is ‘membership’ here. Its not a public transport flight, its a private flight. You’re paying to join a small club that is keeping a unique aircraft in the air – and in effect you’re sharing the cost of its operation. I think you’ll find that is allowed in the UK and has been for some time.

I’ll have to check with our electrician. He was hefting various black boxes about from the stores, and explained the problem to me in simple terms…. well, as simple as you can get without using coloured letters and pictures! (I hate electrickery)
