Could have done that at Dx 😉

Theirs is just sleeping! Ours was just being downright stubborn. I will get down and see the Duxford machine before too long though.

I’ve been too busy playing with a grumpy Shackleton.

I look forward to the day when a younger generation takes control of our museums and we finally drift away from this bizarre notion that the past fifty years are somehow less significant to our history. Trouble is, I fear that an awful lot of magnificent aircraft will have gone by then.

The younger generations are trying.. the problem is engaging them when there is a big gap in history (both taught and presented in museums) from the end of the Berlin Airlift through to the Falklands.

Sadly an awful lot of magnificent aircraft have already gone. We just have to do all we can to keep what is left safe.

Best of luck to all at Gatwick. Hope the decision comes out positive.

It’s a big beautiful aircraft. It cost a huge amount of money to run. So what, so bloody what. Why on earth isn’t every single person on this forum backing it to the hilt?

Because my life doesn’t revolve around that aircraft, and my money is better spent elsewhere. I’ll bet the same goes for other people.

I enjoy seeing it fly, in the same way I enjoy watching a Chinook fly, but that doesn’t mean I’m going to prop it up financially. It will get the odd donation from me, as it did at Waddington.

I’m still interested to know – as everyone keeps saying it “pays its way” – has the gap in funding been closed yet?

The problem with gauging “Vulcan effect” is that the opinions on it come from those who are asked….. and those that are asked are usually to be found clustered around Vulcan Village for most of the day rather than on the rest of the field.

While I was happy to see XH558 in attendance at Waddington, congratulating solely the Vulcan for boosting visitor numbers seems a bit of an ego trip. Do they all really think the BBMF, Team Viper, Sally B, and the Thunderbirds will have done nothing for the gate figures then?

Pride comes before a fall. Has the shortfall for the second half of the year sponsorship (that was brought forward) been made up yet? That will be a true test of the Vulcan effect, if the funding can recover the lost ground from the beginning of the year.

    Good luck to them.

I agree… other examples being the Cosford MR2, and the Strathallan T4 as examples of the last of a variant being scrapped. I’d love to see a Shackleton either rubbing shoulders with the Lincoln at Cosford, or filling the gap between Lancaster, York and Vulcan at Duxford. Sadly, I don’t think it will happen though.

I cant help but think – what is it relevant to in the IWM collection? There’s no Nimrod there, and precious little else to do with postwar Coastal Command/Maritime work.

Restoration is important, but what is to be done if the IWM can’t achieve this? Difficulties in allocating storage space to a tired looking large aircraft, transport costs if you want to store it off site, and a shortage of funding probably influenced them in their decision to move it on.

I don’t think there’s a question of whether it can be restored elsewhere though, as Newark’s MR3 is a shining example of what can be done at a smaller location.

    I’m split over this.

On one hand there is the argument that a national collection would be expected to preserve an aircraft already in their collection, especially one as significant as a Shackleton. There are precious few of them left, and given recent post on here we could be looking at a drop in numbers from what we have got.

However.. I have to think that the IWM by offering the aircraft through the BAPC, they have ensured its safety rather than threatening it. It won’t end up like the Hendon Beverley did by this process. I would guess whoever has approached IWM about it has done so after a great deal of thought, so I remain positive about XF708’s future.

In my opinion, IWM are right in doing this. They’ve obviously realised that they have left the aircraft too long, and that their resources (which are probably suffering under the recession) are insufficient to cover the cost of its restoration. I don’t believe they should hang on to it at all costs.

he pointed out theres never been a Dak at Waddingtion

There has! One of Coventry’s used to fly in with passengers on the morning of the airshow, until all Dak passenger flights stopped in the UK. There was also one in the static park last year, near the hangars on Classic Flight’s stand.

I got to the A15 entrance at 8.30 and things were already starting to grind to a halt.

Excellent displays, by all manner of aircraft. BBMF, the Vulcan, Sally B…. and I never thought I’d see five Hawker Hunters in the air at once again!

    Marvellous stuff.

That slightly suspicious coolant smell. The low coolant light coming on repeatedly. Evidence of leakage between block and cylinder head.

    Oh ******.
