Libya wasnt at war with the US or have crippling 10 year sanctions imposed through the UN, not to mention no fly zones and other things setup. Saddam was also asking for benefits which the US refused, so how was a deal possible.

So if somebody tried to kill your dad you would be open to business discussion with them?

A deal was perfectly possible. Libya had been under heavy sanctions and had been bombed by the US, perfect example.

I could certainly get over it if they failed and repented.

I tell you why I find this a weak argument,

-Saddam tried to kill bush senior, you really think bush junior is going to trust and sign oil agreements with hes fathers plotter?
-Iraq under saddam signed a number of big oil agreements with Russia do you think bush would want those agreements to be kept as well?

And come on think, the US for the last 10/15 years had been demonising Saddam, and then in 2003 they decide to sign oil deals with him….hmm I can see it now news headlines, america signs oil deals with saddam, that would have put both in the same boat would of been a PR disaster for the US.

Not really, get Saddam to hand over a few missiles and accept a few inspections and call it a victory for diplomacy, worked in the Libya case.

Dont see why the US should have a problem with Russia having oil deals with Iraq.

Yeah and Saddam tried to kill Bush senior, so what?

I think I’ll pass on that one and let you feel you won the argument, and I’ll the NHL progress instead.

No argument to win, just pointing out that you are wrong.

Oh and the National Hockey League will not change that.

I remember it’s the only ministry that was protected. There were news pieces about other ministries (economy, education…) being pillaged as were museums and so forth… but there was no way to touche the oil ministry…

Seriously that should have been eye opening to every right winger out there.

    Nic

The reason the oil ministry was protected and the others were not is incompetence and not conspiracy. The belief was the Iraqis were somehow going to create their own glorious nirvana funded by oil. Thus the decision was taken that as long as the oil industry was protected Iraqs phoenix like rebirth would be possible through its oil reserves. Add to that a fundamentally flawed strategy for occupation which left insufficient troops to do much else and there you have the real problem.

Pretty much, the problem being Saddam would sign those contracts with Europen countries, or Russia, or China, and not with US companies…

Common misconception from people who dont know what they are talking about.

Material gathered post invasion revealed that Saddam had actually been pretty desperate to move towards the US as far back as the mid 90’s. He would have been perfectly happy to sign with America.

    Scorpian:

Wall street journal March 7, 2003:

Newyork times March 22nd, 2003 James Dao-embedded reporter:

    And this is surprising becouse?

Of course the Oil fields were protected, SOC has already pointed out Saddams track record on this issue and Oil is the single greatest asset in reconstructing Iraq.

Think you have missed the point…as happens !

You can hardly call Rover/MG as a major dominating part of the life of the UK.

Yes it was for those employed at Longbridge but hardly to the same level of importance as Oil is to the Iraqi’s !

    Really Larry..i am disappointed !

So you dont have a point either. Go to Canary Wharf and count how many of the companies there are from the UK. This is common practice all over the world in every industry.

Accusing someome of “Hatred” is a very serious issue…

    Over here definately so;

    http://www.homeoffice.gov.uk/crime-victims/reducing-crime/hate-crime/

Strange the mods havent taken you up on this before !

And why should any foreign nation have such a major dominating involvement in another countries principal source of wealth ? Would you like it if the Chinese or the Russians “owned” , for instance ,most of the oil refineries in the US or most of the Wheat mills or the Coal Mines ?

You would be amazed how much China and others do own, its called globalisation, ask MG/Rover about it.

You have really lost the plot, because I didnt give America a capital letter I must hate it, you have just lost any credibility you have left there.

Something for those of you who are interested, the US has signed a number of production sharing agreements with iraq for oil.

    http://uk.reuters.com/article/oilRpt/idUKL0865925320070908
    http://www.cbc.ca/world/story/2007/01/08/iraq-oil.html

Whats significant about this is, these agreements have not been signed with other OPEC memebers, saudis, irani’s for the simple reason that the above want control over their oil assets. These agreements negate those controls.

    No you hate America.

What is your point? America is involved in Iraq’s oil Industry, your point being?

Page 10 has many explanations, b something flex, garry, soc, pla, me and others have also discussed in. If thats your explanation for the war not being about oil, im afraid thats a weak argument.

So by me not giving capital letters means i must hate america….get real dont you see how stupid that sounds?, maybe its also to do with rushing while im typing not really paying attention to spelling and punctuation. or is that stating the obvious.

    The article I posted qoutes:

Sounds very oil centric to me.

Perfectly rational, you hate America. Obvious by your refusal to give it a capital letter, your inability to provide any evidence for your silly little theory and you pointless quoting of an article that does nothing for your argument.

Problem with you is, you make up lies to discredit people, like saying how I support a genocidal dictator, when did I ever say I did?, and you say how I hate america which again something I have never said, People like you seem to take criticism as oh he must hate america.

Care to explain how my opinions are flawed? so to quickly sum up what are your reasons for the invasion of Iraq?,

Oh just some old news from one of your fellow coalition of the willing…funny how lies can be contained only for so long.

    http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/main.jhtml?xml=/news/2007/07/05/woz105.xml

    All explained on page 10.

The fact that you are unable to even give the country a capital letter really furthers the point.

Try reading articles before linking them, all the Australians are saying is that oil is a vital natural resource and careful consideration must be given to insuring its safe supply, that is a very long way from claiming that Iraq was invaded for oil.

If that makes you sleep better 🙂

Never had a problem sleeping but I can imagine why it would be a concern for you, after all you support genocidal dictators.

I am the one who has explained the reason for the invasion of Iraq rather than deciding that I hate America before creating a flawed opinion based around that concept
