The cavour is good but too small for IN. After all ADS is like an enlarged Cavour to meet IN’s needs. I don’t agree with other assertions, Cavour can only carry 24 aircrafts in total unlike gorky which can carry 24 fighters and 10 helicopters. F-35b is STVOL and can be carried on Gorky if bought, that is not cavours advantage but shortcoming if it can only take that kind of AC.
Aster-15 is a joke if it was Aster-30 I would agree. Gorky will most likely be fitted with Barak-2 like viraat carries Barak-1.

Aster 15 is not a joke, it is a highly effective self defence missile that is far ahead of anything that India could dream of producing.

True. From that view point name any government project that doesn’t cost more than it should, the few that don’t seem to be substandard/unfit for purpose.

Exactly, BTW a few years back the head of BAe Systems remarked that the only way to get any project started with the MoD was to lie about how much it would cost.

i personally feel that Cavour is a better carrier than the reconstructed gorskov.

• better self defense [Aster 15]
• similar numbers of fighters
• fitted for f35B which i feel are a better aircraft than mig29K
• better designed lifts. Both are off the flight line

Why did you qoute me for that? F-35B was not on the table and was unlikely to be on the table when the important decisions were made, even if it was it would be unlikely to fit the desired time frame.

Bean counting wins over providing the military what they actually need then? Sounds like the usual then. I always said when I was in the army that the forces are never issued any (new) equipment in peace time that is not almost obsolete

Not really, the Army needed a new rifle and it got one. Sure it had its problems at first but it turned out to be an excellent and highly flexible weapon system. Ultimately everybody won. It might have cost a little more than it should but name a military program that does not.

Unfortunately I strongly suspect that the MOD are stalling on GR4 replacement in the hope that UCAVs will be the whole answer, not a part answer…

They will only ever be part of the answer, the Typhoon is being loaded up as a strike platform as we speak and it will work with UCAV’s and F-35’s to form a very powerful strike force.

But it still cost millions in taxpayers money that could have been better spent on something else. The fault lies with the fact MOD procurement is handled by people who have little or no understanding of what is actually required.

There is currently no fault at all, the type had problems at first but it is now regarded as a very good weapon.

I was hoping to be more antagonistic than scary but hey whatever.;) My personal wine preference for Goose is a deep heavy red it just seems to sit well with it.
