what ever u think. EU trade and prosperity is depended on US providing protection. u cannot ignore this point. and Putin is exactly doing it to create a divide between EU and US so can pick a easy fight with EU.

Yeah you really do have no idea what your talking about…………….now as I said, go away.

The problem is that we like to spend – sorry: waste – money on projects that ALWAYS cost more and take twice as long to deliver. We should stop wasting money and buy off the shelf. Sometimes this might appear to be more expensive, but when you factor in the ability to overspend on projects like the Nimrod MR4, you will always save money by buying what’s available now.

The problem is that if the real cost of many of these projects was ever revealed to the government beforehand they would never get started.;)

Europe can defend without US? Is it a big joke. Without US. Russia can bring entire EU brought into its knees within A day. just blocking energy from Middleast , Central asia and complete asian trade. ur not even capable of fighting taliban/Iran type countries let alone Russia. and in coming decades this thing will be proven. just few visits of Backfire/BlackJacks are enough to shut the North Sea Oil.

Nope your the big joke along with your weird love of Russia, something which is clearly a displacement for your realisation that your native Pakistan is a failed state in all but name, now take your rubbish and stop posting here.

There is a defence review due in the spring, whilst there will be no real budget cuts to the MoD budget individual programs will suffer. What you are seeing at the moment is the various armed services battling with each other to secure shares of the budget. The army is winning hands down for obvious reasons and they are likely to be the beneficiarys at the expense of the RAF and the RN (the latter in particular). The army has done something truly remarkable in that they have managed to create a situation whereby it would be very politically damaging to cut their share of the budget, pretty much ring fencing themselves from cuts and making it very likely that the RN will shrink further to fund their equipment requirements.

For all the media speculation we will not know anything for sure until the review is revealed.

    Good and so what.

Not only was CFE dead but it was never really alive to start with and to be perfectly honest its somewhat belated funeral is irrelevant. The fact is that despite its current oily wealth Russia is not a serious threat to even Europe let alone the United States in any arena outside of nuclear arms and that one is neutralised just as it has been for the past 60 years. Russia and the west need to wake up to the fact that Russia’s potential is now only as a middling power beside Japan and the big European countries, it will never in the long term be able to compete with the impending might of China, India and the existing power of the USA. From here on out it is a three way race and Russia aint in it.

My area of interest ends around 1945, but if you have an interest in Stalin’s warships up to that time, you can look for the book I have coming out this summer, Raising the Red Banner. More visual than my usual stuff, about 240 photos.

I will certainly have a look Tiornu, however I am intrigued as to why you chose 1945 as an end point? To me at least it is impossible to really see any major break at that point. The best way to look at it (to me) is from 1937 to 1953.

I just want to update with a few clarifying figures,

    Light cruisers,

Projekt-68k: 5 units of improved Chapayev class ships that were laid down before the Second World War. A further two units had been destroyed by the Germans.

Projekt-68bis: 14 units of the Sverdlov class, these were the original units and all were completed in one form or another.

Projekt-68bis-zif: 11 units of improved Sverdlovs with modified AA armament and protection against radioactive fallout. All of these units were canceled after Stalin’s death.

Thus we have 30 light cruisers, 25 of which were Sverdlovs but built in two batches. It should be noted that a very basic analysis says that all these ships were more powerful than all the RN cruisers except Tiger, Lion, Blake and possibly Belfast.

    Detroyers,

Projekt-41: A total of 110 units were planned for the large destroyer program in addition to the 70 Projekt-30bis ships. This gives a total force of 180 powerful DDG’s (Stalin wanted 250).

Thus with the exception of capital ships this gives the Soviet Union probably the second most powerful surface fleet in the world. The ships themselves seem to be have very capable AAW armaments and clearly represent a very potent force.

Considering it based heavily on the WASP Class LHD’s. I see few problems with design, construction, or budget………IMPRESSIVE AND POWERFUL SHIPS! :diablo:

Damn straight, the new LHD’s with F-35B will be as powerful as many other countries carriers and will provide a massive boost to US power projection capabilities and further reinforce the USN’s absolute naval supremacy over any combination of opponents. All they need to do is get the AEW version of the osprey going and the new LHD’s will have the ability to become full blown carriers. :diablo:

I was thinking of boots for our brave lads, or the NHS, or the roads, or the list is endless 😀

I see there are now 100s marching through the capital demanding she be shot, denounces the verdict as to lenient

What a peaceful bunch they are.

    Source “Agence France-Presse”

You wait for the flag burning to come next 😀

We have seen all this before, IIRC last time it was ‘if you call us violent we will kill you’, really pleasant. It is blatantly apparent that a very large tract of Islam is an evil and violent ideology.

    Hi 25deg south
The fault you talked about with the barrel length was I think that due to the length of the barrel and the fact that the stock on the SLR was below the barrel/working parts centre line the recoil force would make the barrel rise before the round left it thus throwing the aim out so the SLR never made a good “sniper” rifle not that it was ever suposed to be but it did effect its aim. Steve

The SLR is a version of the FAL, a weapon with a great reputation as a battle rifle but certainly not an assault rifle and never going to be a precision weapon.

Every country will claim it is the best… every enemy is denigrated as evil or bad. The west was excellent at demonising communism and nazism, yet clearly evidence in China shows the western democracies can put aside their problems over communism and both can get along.

You really have lost the plot,

    1) Only in the most absurd of fantasies is China actually communist.

    2) The Nazis did a pretty good job of ‘demonising’ themselves, I am assuming that you are aware of the Holocaust?

    2) The same applies to the Russian Communists, turns out Stalin wasnt such a great guy after all.
