European Union has 2 Battle groups ready every six months in order to be able to send them to war zones or crisis 600 metric miles from Brusselles. From 1st of january it’s gonna be a swedish (or nordic) and a spanish battle group operative.

Please enlighten me; why would these countries need a C-17 if what EU wants to do is to send a 2500 man battle group with light AFV to Chad in Africa, for one example? They operate Hercules today and intends to solve these missions with 4 Hercules.

    Cliff

If they think they are going to be sustaining a force of 2500 men along with light armored vehicles in Chad with Herciles then they are living in cloud cuckoo land, that is the reason why Europeans find them selves renting Russian and American cargo capacity and why the likes of the UK and Australia have bought the C-17.

I didn’t understand that in AFM – the MiG-29SMTs they got (not UBTs, is the impression I got) were used airframes that were in poor condition, therefore they halted deliveries?

    What used airframes?

Is the UBT not the trainer version to the SMT as the UB is to the basic fulcrum?

The RAF lost out just as much as the RN did, in some ways even more so- who is it who now provides the nuclear deterrent?

I think the Nuclear deterrent has proved to be a millstone for whichever service has to provide it; many writers have commented that the ’66 review was really down to the fact that the RN could have either Polaris or CVA-01, but not both. Whatever the truth, I would have been happy yo leave the deterrent role with the RAF if it meant we kept the carriers and the FAA intact.

Prior to 1982 the Nuclear role was the only game in town. The Knott defence review may be hated and despised almost universally now, but at the time it was not that out of line. Effectively the only role in town, the Knott defence review orientated the navy around that with a fairly large number of submarines, to hunt other submarines, and a smaller surface force of ASW ships to also hunt submarines. The idea that the RN was going to have a long term campaign escorting convoys across the Atlantic was a ridiculous notion . For the role given to the RN the Knott defence review was not unreasonable, it only became so becouse of the Falklands and then then the collapse of the Soviet Union, but it is imperative to remember that prior to that the RN’s near sole function was to prepare to fight the SU.

So why did all these countries specify an aircraft which, according to you, they don’t want?

    Politics.

Yes but not too many countries want to pay $ 250 mil for a C-17 do they? A-400M at $ 140 mil is not cheap but more affordable.

We will wait and see if the A-400M really comes out at that price.;)

Yes a few are looking for it but fewer seem to be able to afford it. It frankly not in the same league as A-400M is it? They are not renting Il-76 for nothing.

They are renting IL-76’s becouse they dont have C17’s, the C17 has a larger capacity than the still paper A-400M has.

If they can get the A-400M out in a year or so it certainly has more export potential that C-17.Why would anyone want to kill it for C-17??

Becouse the C-17 is a true strategic air lifter which to be perfectly frank is what most European countries are actually looking for.

I think the Essexes were deemed too small by the US Navy to operate Phantoms and thats why the two or three used as attack carriers in the ’60s and ’70s operated Crusaders. The Midways for example couldn’t operate Tomcats and carried an extra squadron of Hornets to compensate. Though apparently a pair of Essex class carriers were offered to Britain following CVA01’s cancellation to keep us in the carrier game. One assumes they may have been ‘Phantomised’. Also the US Navy had plans for its Essex class carriers at the time the other navies were shopping around for flat tops whilst we couldn’t afford to run/didn’t need our light fleets. And possibly many of these navies may have liked an Essex but saw the CVLs as easier and cheaper to operate re maintenance, crewing and the number of aircraft they could afford to fly from them. After all whats the point in buying a ship that could carry 50 modern aircraft if you only have perhaps two dozen? Remember most of these carriers carried a squadron of fighter bombers, Sea Venoms or Banshees in the ’50s and early ’60s, Skyhawks from then on (except for Argentina who bought Super Etendards to replace its Skyhawks). A squadron of antisubmarine warfare planes, Skyraiders or Gannets in the ’50s, Trackers in the ’60s and for some navies Seakings more recently, plus a planeguard helo or two. No admittedly the size of the carrier may have dictated the size of the airwing, but its just a s possible it was the other way around.

Take a look at the RN’s phantoms, in order to get them off the decks of the Ark Royal they had to have Speys- more powerful than the standard J-79’s and they had to be angled downward to the extent that the fuselage modifications screwed with the aerodynamics so that despite the extra power they were still slower at altitude than the standard phantom!

Perhaps, but they still lost out to an aggresive RAF, who then couldn’t deliver anyway.
To be fair, even when “Stalin’s follies” became evident and the cold war was in full swing, ministers hardly improved things did they?

The RAF lost out just as much as the RN did, in some ways even more so- who is it who now provides the nuclear deterrent?

As for “Stalins follies” had Stalin have not died and the plans followed through they may not have been follies. The sverdlovs certainly scared the hell out of the RN.

This has nothing to do with Raf vs Typhoon BS as I pretty much like both designs. I still believe Rafale has technically won. It has come so far that Saudi order or Rafales has been publicly announced after Chirac met with Saud, don’t you remember?

Later Blair’s visit came plus the thing with termination of investigation of members of royal Saudi family regarding the pervious arms contracts, which might have shifted the deal to the favor of the Typhoon.

They never said anything about the Rafale winning anything and in case you have forgotten it was the Typhoon that won the order not the Rafale.

This is going to be between Gripen and Rafale

Source? Becouse based on the last time this contest was run that was very much not the case. Although I would love to see the Gripen-NG get an order here, thinking about that aircraft might be a good option.

IIRC the range quoted for Hermes is 20km as opposed to 10km for previous generation Russian helicopter launched missiles.

I tried to help to point the fact that the Rafale is a “bargain” for France since a more expensive Eurofighter wouldn’t have able to fulfil all the request of the French AF.

You were not trying to ‘help’ anybody.

man you contradict your self first you say TsAGi was involved throught recomendations and later you say it has nothing to do, do not put words in my mouth, TsAGI did gave a basic aerodynamic model and this was developed individually by Sukhoi and MiG, as aircraft both were designed by their respective design bureaus but undoutedly there is a TsAGI link between the MiG-29 and Su-27

Ken is not contradicting himself at all. All he is doing is pointing out that you are talking utter rubbish and humiliating yourself.

    Welcome to flogger land everybody.:D
