The P-X is a very interesting aircraft, especially as it is the first specially designed MPA aircraft in decades, does anybody know how this compares to say the Nimrod MRA-4 in terms of sensors and the like?

Lord of the seas, the radar that the Su-27SM uses is the N-001V an upgraded variant of the N-001VEP that the Su-30MK2 uses.

It introduces an improved DSP (Baget 55.04.06) and improved digital low frequency receiver N-001-03DO allowing it a series of new modes:

a) Long range search mode (not disclosed how it’s done, maybe it uses HPRF without FM linear ramp like VS modes) allowing target detection at 135-150km in the frontal hemisphery (target RCS 3m2).

b) NCTR of targets.

c) RAID assesment modes

d) Detection and stable tracking of hovering helicopters.

This technology was not allowed to China (as per Pyotr Butowski article at Air International, January 2004), but no idea if it was allowed to other customers of the radar (Venezuela).

Su-27SKM uses a different designation for the N-001VEP, its name is RLPK-27VEP1, maybe the “N name” is N-001VEP1.

Yes, this is correct. I remember seeing some slotted array radar based on Zhuk-MSE(?) that was supposed to be installed into Su-34 instead of B004. But I am not sure whether this materialized or not.

P.S. The Platan targeting system is located between the air intakes just aft to front landing gear well.

As pictured above- however I was under the impression that Plata was a podded system as offered on the Su-30MK series. It would make sense to simply internalise it though.

Hm? Where?

I remember seeing a photo of it posted on here some time ago. It was a sort of drop down flap type thing. I remember it becouse it looked somewhat small for the task and I asked the question as to why it was there when the likes of Platan are available.

That got me too – the missiles below the intakes also have a gray radome rather than a white one like those between the nacelles. Live missile vs. inert mock-up? R-27R vs. R-27ER? Or could this even be the resurrection of the R-27AE? Or just a gray radome? Very confusing!

This one? Looks more ECM-related to me, it appears to be the same system as the one found on the fuselage spine.

I think Pit was reffering to the small silver window type thing just below the IRST ball in front of the cockpit canopy.

1. Not everything, but much that happens in the world is America’s fault or at least has some American involvement included.. Your policy has a glovbal reach, what the hell have you expected?
2. Al Qaeda as a worldwide terrorist web does not exist at all. Nothing but a media hype well supported directly from the White House.
3. Iran is a joke. Ahmy is a clown being given way too much attention. Neither of those does threaten me or anyone else. It is advisable to leave them like that, young people of Iran will take the things there in their own hands even without intervention from outside.

If it was a real threat to Russian strategic capability they wouldn’t complain an threaten to withdraw from a few existing treaties. They would withdraw from them straight away and then take steps to deal with the threat before it materialises.

If Iran had interfered with the US political system to the level the US has interfered with Irans they would already be at war. And what development of ICBMs? They haven’t even mastered SRBMs let alone IRBMs.

Yawn same old rubbish… I don’t care what the facts are America is not to blame, you are all just Yankee bashers that secretly are jealous of what America has and you all just want green cards… blah blah blah…

There were rumours that the leninets sets had run into problems and that either Phazotron or NIIP were going to supply radars based on their existing sets. However I have never found a confirmation or a denial of this. This aircraft is a classic internal Russia only product- ie we know very little about it.:(

There is an internal optical targetting system.

Why should I criticize Russian tests? AFAIK, Americans use ICBMs, too. So where is the problem as long as the balance is kept?

…and since your BS is almost exclusively aimed at everyone else except the US, I think this forum is perfectly balanced, as well.

Read at a page that it uses a new Russian made data processor…wathever that means.

And a Russian ECM system.

Comms are probably english (remember the “english cryptologic system” it was anounced).

Passive EW is south-african (SAAB Avitronik MSWS system)

Nav Imaging Infrared and targetting infrared system is french (NavFlir and Damòcles)…it seems NavFlir is internal to the aircraft (no pod), or so you can see a suspicious optical glaring down on the nose (just down of the IRST ball)

Thales announced also in the past LIMA, that Su-30MKM will carry Reco-NG system.

All altogether a beatiful aircraft…

Umm I dont think thats a display (the one thats pointed to with a red arrow). IIRC its actually a touch screen data input panel. On the opposite of the pilot is the MKI toaster: mission data input slot, which seems to be std Su-30MK fitments.

So what are the fundamental difference b/w MKM and MKI?

Common:
Indian RC1/2
Indian MC1/2?
Aviatronics MAWS

Different:
Aviatronics ECM/RWR on the MKM (vs. Israeli ECM and Indian RWR on MKI)
Thales WA HUD on the MKM (vs. Israeli El-Op SU967)
