I agree, Just because it looks like a “baby herk” Doesn’t mean that the crews will be able to fly the aircraft the same way. All the systems are different so I do not feel that the crews could be Certified on both just because they are certified on one.
If I remeber correctly it has already been posted on this forum somewhere that the similarities between the C-27J and the J variant Hercules are so great that crews will be automatically qualified on both if they qualifie on one.
i was looking for some specs and can’t seem to find the range of the fck-1. anybody has those figures?
with a top speed of 1.2 mach versus the fc-1’s 1.8, low weapons load of 4 short range AAMs or 2 medium range AAMs, the Fck-1 clearly lags behind its modern contemporaries. i can’t seem to locate its combat range but my guess is its not comparable. I find it hilarious that its being compared with the mirage 2000, or even the fc-1 / lca. the best thing about this plane are its looks – if looks could kill this would be it.
In its latest incarnation the BVR load is upto 4, giving it a heavier A2A loadout than the JF-17, and putting it in line with the F-16 and the Mirage-2000.

The reason why IR is used is because active radar guidance (at that time) does not discriminiate and resolve well enough against coastal formations and sea beds, all of which create clutter. And there is one reason why IIR is only going to be a limited idea for AshMs; water vapor often acts as an effective barrier against IR.
Which of course makes perfect sense when one considers that the Kongsberg NSM is primarily intended for coastal applications as well- in fact I would suspect that the overall requirement was not that different from the one for the ASM-2.
Which is fine, really, since it wasn’t intended to have to perform as a mud mover. Had a multi-role platform been the goal, things would be different. But it wasn’t, so the Raptor remains the gold standard in air to air combat aircraft, while being an interested participant in the field of strike aircraft, which if you ask me is a field currently dominated by the Su-34.
Which is exactly my point, for a country operating the B-2, B-52, B-1B, F-15E, F-18E/F, along with ship and submarine launched Tomahawks, as well as having strategic UCAV’s and the F-35 in its not too distant future, the Raptors comparatively limited A2G capability is not an issue. As I said in the opening post the Raptor is without doubt the outstanding A2A aircraft of its generation.
Of course it does all raise the question of how effective the F-23 (with its bigger weapons bays) fitted with something like EOTS would be in A2G arena?
An F-22 only has to get within 60 miles of an S-400 radar to take it out. Unless the radar can detect it significantly further away than that (does you no good if you detect it just as it’s releasing an SDB) it’s a non issue. An SDB wouldn’t be the ideal weapon for that job anyway so it’s pretty much moot.
It is somewhat unfortunate that we dont have any real figures for interception ranges against stealthy aircraft of the latest generation radars. I mentioned the Sampson earlier in this thread but I can not confirm it.
Interestingly, antri-radiation bombs appear to have been tried before- I wonder why the idea never got further developed after the war and the ARM became prevalent? Maybe the vulnerability of bombs to anti-aircraft systems?
If the ARM route is such an ‘old fashioned’ technique why has the USN been funding the AGM-88E (ordered by Italy just last year), and why has the USAF been testing the HDAM? Not to mention the JASSM with a range in excess of 200nm which is to be used by both the USAF and the USN.

Optical targeting? As has been explained to you, the F-22 has 1) access to information from other platforms, & 2) optical systems are fair weather only, & easily defeated. Radar with MTI, passive electro-magnetic sensors, bombs with their own sensors for the final leg . . . . the F-22 has all these.
There seems to be a general loss of interest in ARMs these days. Germany suspended development of Armiger, France has retired them. The trend is to use other sensors to locate radars, & lob a relatively cheap GPS-guided bomb at the location. Multi-mode seekers are being developed so that other missiles (i.e. not specialised ARMs – e.g. AAMs) can attack radars.
The F-22 has less need of an ARM than other types which might be used for SEAD, due to its low RCS, high speed, & high cruising altitude. It can approach closer before being detected, & can launch bombs (e.g. SDB) from greater ranges. This seems to be its intended modus operandi in the SEAD role.
You seem to be fixated on old-fashioned ways of doing things.
See above posts about the ability of the F-22 to get to a sufficient point to release its PGM’s, SOC initially raised the issue and he is one of the most informed posters here and I am inclined to agree with him.
Maybe you could explain why the F-35 has the EOTS if its old fashioned?
The notion that tactical air (F-22 or any other tactical air) can be used to strike Russian ICBM silos is extremely silly. Tactical air doesn’t have the range to penetrate deep within Russia’s borders and there are simply too many silos to be dealt with using slow airplanes.
Also, why get hung up over an inability to use LGBs? In fact LGBs are useless in bad weather or if too much dust/obscurant is present. One of the most effective countermeasures SH’s Osirak nuclear complex had were smoke pots around the perimeter. When the USAF attacking force approached, the smoke pots were lit effectively obscuring the target so LGBs could not be employed. The only reason the F-117s were able to do the deed is because the Iraqis had no warning that they were coming and didn’t fire up the smoke pots. Bad weather/obscurants also negate the effectiveness of current EO/IR targeting pods, but has no effect on APG-77 SAR or ISAR modes.
SDB II is an all-weather munition that gets around this bad weather/obscurant issue with the millimeter wave function of the tri mode seeker. The SDB II autopilot/seeker combo is designed to track and engage targets moving up to 50 MPH. A quick Google will verify this capability.
Also Google DRADM. It can function as an ARM, LRAAM, or AGM for use against high value targets.
Do a little research to keep from looking dumb.

The obvious question is why bother with EOTS on the F-35, such a system clearly has a use or it would not be there?
And we still have the issue of a lack of penetrator munitions, or anything over a 1000lb. And SOC raised the issue- something which had not crossed my mind before, that an F-22 might not be able to get close enough to an S-400 battery without being detected to deliver an SDB. This certainly suggests that there is still a use for ARM’s- in the Raptors (The F-35’s as well realy) case an ARM AMRAAM or Meteor might be a good investment for the SEAD role?
An interesting question, how valuable would a JDAM or an SDB be against a well defended and layered AD system, for instance I have seen claims that Pantsir can intercept falling bombs, or is this a non issue?
It still seems that the Raptor, is one of the less capable strike aircraft available today, especially when put against the versatility of the F-35.
While the F-22 has some nice strike features and is going to officialy replace the F-117, it cannot do everything the Nighthawk does. 2000lb LGBs are the weapon of choice for hardened targets. The Raptor can neither carry nor self-designate those.

That is exactly what I have been saying about the F-22 in comparison to the F-117.
No optical system and no penetrator munitions and only 1000lb bombs as opposed to 2000lb for the F-117 and JSF. The difference between the internal carriage of the JSF and the F-22 is quite stark, the Raptor can not carry 2000lb class weapons, and it cannot carry the JSOW.
Could you tell me which parts of the global security stuff are outdated, I am sure that I have read that the side looking radar arrays have been cancelled, and I have not heard or seen anything about stealthy weapons pods for some time?
1) Slightly careless of me. Japan has not planned to overfly defended hostile territory previously, AFAIK, confining strikes to ports & other coastal targets, using stand-off weapons. Hitting N. Korean missile launchers might now require that, depending on the solution chosen – or available.
2) Bloody silly question. Doesn’t have to find them, but has to hit designated co-ordinates, if doing the F-117 thing. Plenty of other sensors – as I said. I didn’t say “hunting” – I specifically mentioned GPS aimed bombs. And we’re not talking Scuds, we’re talking bigger, longer-range missiles, launched from both fixed & mobile (but limited by terrain, their own size, & a limited road network) launchers. The fixed sites are known: the mobile launchers don’t have the scope to roam & hide that Iraqi ones had in 1991, & the capabilities to find them are better. But it could find them – optical & FLIR sensors aren’t the only ones.

Everything that is a first is unique at the time- the V2 was unique at the time, the first plane was unique at the time. Considering the advanced nature of Japanese industry we should not be surprised that they were the first to use IIR for an AShM. After all Japan was one of the first countries to deploy AESA radar on a combat aircraft as well.

The lack of any penetrator munitions makes it pretty much useless at hitting hardened targets, I think its probably fair to say that once North Korea and Iran start to deploy their big missiles they will use hardened Silo’s. of course China and Russia already do.
The lack of any optical targeting equipment, seems to make anything with wheels or tracks extremely difficult.
The lack of an ARM, certainly does not help with the SEAD role, I also have to agree with SOC on the S-400 issue, it seems to early to suggest that the F-22 is S-400 proof. That actually leads me to another point, it is sometimes said that the Raptor has the RCS of a bird, I have also read that the Sampson radar on the RN type-45 can detect a pigeon at 100+Km under the right conditions. Whilst the raptor may have an RCS smaller than a pigeon it does suggest that while Stealth is a big advantage those systems currently pushing the technology edge may be able to degrade the advantage to some extent.
The ability of the F-22 to penetrate airspace is not under dispute, however the question remains, what is it going to do when it gets there. Mobile targets seem to be out and so do hardened targets. Fixed targets, with pre-known locations that are not hardened seem to be the Raptors only A2G niche. Somebody else has mentioned in this thread that although the Raptor is the official F-117 replacement it certainly is not a true replacement- in fact the F-35 seems better for this.
Obviously for the USAF with its strategic UCAV’s coming in the near future, B-2’s, F-15E’s, F-35, B-52, B-1B, as well as the USN’s Tomahawks this is not realy an issue. However for a country looking for a real versatile strike platform, the F-22 in its current form, looks like the last aircraft anyone would look at.
Obviously the Raptor has a reasonable strike capability but it has nothing like the versatility of other types in production, such as the F-35, F-15E/K/T, F-18E/F, Rafale, Mig-35, Su-34 etc.
Don’t forget the 20,000lbs of external stores it can carry when it doesn’t have to be stealthy like the F-15E and Su-34. Of course they haven’t cleared it for anything external other than AIM-120s and 600 gallon tanks but if they felt the need it would just be a matter of doing it. Other than that what other aircraft in the world could sneak by Su-30s and S-400s and drop 8 GPS guided munitions wherever it wants whenever it wants? (And before anybody chimes in with “B-2” the topic is strike aircraft.)
