Guns do not kill people, people kill people. Blaming gun laws for the actions of individuals does nothing but absolve those individuals of responsibility for their actions.

Perhaps a flank array antenna for its radar like a submarine?

Regarding square exhaust nozzles I have already seen a test model fitted on to one engine on an Su-27 for testing. Haven’t seen it since. Super secret or failure… that is the question.

I think I know what you are reffering too, I have seen it too, however it was labelled as a very early attempt/experiment with TVC. It certainly did not look stealthy.

As they saying goes, there are lies, damned lies, statistics & defence spending in totalitarian states.

Russia is not a Totalitarian state, whilst its democratic standards may at best be questionable, it is not totalitarian.

That’s just from another rumour thread on Chinese forum. Apparently, this thing was on one of the experiment ships. Although, I haven’t seen it from any of the photos I’ve seen. Frankly, they already have something that looks like Sampson that is actually paired up with HH-16 and the FCRs. So imo, just rubbish.

Second Hypers question, like what? The 054A’s use Top plate which is in knowhere near the same league as Sampson.

Hyper, could you keep us updated on that radar, for sometime now I have been expecting China to develop a Frigate sized radar (something like Herakles) using the 052C radar technology. What you have posted above looks like a good candidate.

I have been looking for a picture of this boat for years, you have done better than I have you found that model!:)

The Iranians have managed to reverse engineer the Oto Melera 76mm so it would make sense for that to be fitted, some Chinese SSM’s and Iranian MANPAD’s are likely too.

I have to say, it would actually look better in an all-over light gray, as on its nose. I actually really like the Polish F-16 camoflage, very smart!

Personally I like it, looks like a cross between a usual display bird and a combat bird- very nice.

The Tornado configuration is a blend between two designs. BAC’s design was derived from the UKVG, which in turn was derived from the AFVG (Anglo-French Variable Geometry. I’m not sure of the history behind MBB’s design. MRCA/Tornado was a blend of the best features in each design.

There’s more info in the British VG Projects topic on my site:

    http://www.secretprojects.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,468.html

Cheers aerospacetech, it looks like the Tornado was the culmination of a British design idea going back to the early 1960’s!

Thats what I have read too, at least if I remember correctly. afaik, stealth pods were never considered officially. As the line is going to close in 2010 under current plans, all the post 2010 Blocks are not more than suggestions at the moment.

IIRC the stealth pods were only ever shown on CGI’s of the proposed FB-22, the one with the large Delta wing- ie not the F-22 itself. The fact that there seems to be no plans for such pods on the F-35 suggests that the Raptor is probably not likely to see them for sometime.

You might like this. The Delta-3 is second from the right. (Now could someone please give me some info on the far right design? Supposedly a mach 3 “Mirage 6”.) BTW I like the 559 too 🙂 Oh, these are to scale too.

Cheers sferrin, thats an interesting pic, I assume this uses the smaller Delta-3 design as the larger version used the Gyron which itself was a huge engine and the image puts the Delta-3 smaller than the Arrow. The Type-559 is sexy!;)

Levsha, I have wondered the same thing about the 188, however I have read that it suffered from a lack of fuel to the extent that it was unable to be tested to its full extent-possibly not a good start for the F155T requirement.

aerospacetech, thats an interesting site you have there- I have a funny feeling that I am going to lose alot of hours trawling through all the information there!

If anybody knows I would be interested to know where the Tornado design evolved from becouse its similiarity to some early 1960’s british paper designs (which were intended to enter service in the early 70’s) is quite startling.

You’re not wrong. There are projects like the Saunders Roe SR53 hybrid jet/rocket fighter which flew in prototype form, Hawker P.1121 which reached the mock-up stage, as did the Avro 720 rocket fighter, the TSR-2 of course and all the paper planes – SR.177 jet/rocket fighter, Buccaneer Mk2* (supersonic Buccaneer), ‘thin wing’ Javelin and Sea Vixen projects, ‘isoclonic wing’ Hunter and Swift projects… interesting times.

Of course the prototype for the P.1121 was under construction when it was cancelled. Never forget the P.1154 (super-sonic Harrier) of which the engine was tested and IIRC the prototype was under construction. Then there was the AW.681 STOL transport too which was an impressive piece of kit before it died.
Also there were the Vickers Type.581/583, which although they never left the drawing board do look suspiciously like the Tornado even though they appeared in the early 1960s! There was also the Avro-730 near Mach-3 bomber.
There were other aircraft that bit the bullet before Sandys even got to write his report, such as the Supermarine Type-545 (a kind of supersonic swift). This is all not too mention the Miles M.52 that could have quite easily been the first manned aircraft to go supersonic.

However all the above was realy the problem, frankly most of these requirements were rather extravagant, and the P.1121 could have filled most of the RAF’s combat aircraft needs. Sandys review may have been excessive but it was certainly partially neccesary, the level of spending the British government was doing on defence was simply unsustainable.

There were also some interesting civilian developments such as the Vickers V.1000 which was cancelled in 1953 that could have made a nice Boeing 707 rival.

    A massive thing!

    http://www.flightglobal.com/articles/2007/04/11/213198/picture-jsf-helmet-mounted-display-revealed.html

That optical module is made by VSI, I think the helmet is a standard Gentex.
The oxygen mask is not an integral part (also made by Gentex).
    Does anybody know the weight?

Holy cow that thing is hideous! It makes the F-35 pilot look like Satan himself!:diablo:

Very interesting. That Fairy concept certainly looks the most practical design. reminds me of a Backfire actually. The Vickers/Supermarine one is definitely interesting but would a quite limited design I expect. Then again planes back then weren’t expected to serve for thirty years.

    Daniel

I would certainly agree with that, whilst the Fairey design looks as if it would have significant upgrade/development potential, some of the others look very limited in scope.

    Sorry for the confusion everybody.:D

I’m confused. Isn’t that a picture of a mock-up of it beside the text on the Thunder and Lightnings page?

Apparently that mock-up is of a swing-wing version offered to the Royal Navy rather than the P-8 which according to the description had the air intakes moved to the fuselage sides.
